Yeoh Wins Zonal, Qualifies for World Cup and gets GM norm

Malaysia has a new star. Yeoh Li Tian drew his last round game against GM-elect Haridas Pascua of the Philippines to win the Zone 3.3 Zonal Championship thereby qualifying for the World Cup. The 18-year-old Malaysian also scored the required percentage to get his first GM norm.

Yeoh finished the 9-round Swiss system with 7 points, in a tie with top seed GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam who drew with GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia in the last round to take one of the two qualifying slots to the Word Cup this September in Tbilisi, Georgia.

In the women’s division, the race for the title and the single qualifying slot in the Women’s World Championship cycle goes to WIM Vo Thi Kim Phung of Vietnam. She drew with top seed Irine Sukandar of Indonesia in the last round to finish alone with 7 points.
