Ghaem Maghami essayed the English Opening against giant killer FM Malek Koniahli of Syria and gained two pawns. The Iranian centralized his Queen and reached unstoppable mate in 40 moves (see diagram below) after 40. Qd4-a7.
Gholami crushed the Pirc Defense of erstwhile solo leader FM Akar Ali Salih of Iraq in 47 moves as the latter lost by time forfeit.
Salih and GM Pouya Idani of Iran follow with 4.5 points each in the race for $1,500 in cash prizes.
