Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. won the 2025 Chinese-Taipei Chess Association (CTCA) International Chess Open Blitz tournament held July 19, 2025 in Taoyuan City, Chinese Taipei.
Antonio finished 8.5 points from eight wins and a draw in nine rounds after a 5-0 start.
He defeated Yu-Ting Yen of Chinese-Taipei, Yong-Ye Chen of Chinese-Taipei, Kok Onn Osric Mooi of Singapore, Woman International Master Kylen Joy Mordido of the Philippines and FIDE Master Roel Abelgas of the Philippines in the first five rounds.
He split the point with FIDE Master Sander Severino of the Philippines in the sixth round then bested National Master Darry Bernardo of the Philippines in the seventh round, Grandmaster Gergely Aczel of Hungary in the eight round and International Master Ryosuke Nanjo of Japan in the ninth and final round.
GM Aczel took the runner-up place with 8.0 points followed by FM Severino and Carl Zirex Sato of the Philippines who boast 7.5 points apiece.
NM Bernardo, IM Nanjo and WIM Mordido wound up 5th to 7th placers with 7.0 points each.
Rounding up the top ten who got 6.5 points were James Infiesto of the Philippines (eight) , Wu Chen-Hao of Chinese-Taipei and FM Abelgas.
It shall be recalled that GM Antonio is fresh from winning the Philippine Battle of the Champion and 5th Asenso Ozamis Open chess championship last July 12 and 13 in Ozamis City, hosted by Misamis Occidental Governor Henry S. Oaminal Sr.- Marlon Bernardino-
