
GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia and IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Vietnam topped the Men’s and Women’s preliminaries of the Southeast Asian Games Rapid Chess Championship to advance to the Knockout stage tomorrow in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. Megaranto (above left) finished alone with 4 points in the 5-round Swiss followed by IM Tin Jingyao of Singapore (above right), IM Setyaki Azarya Jodi of Indonesia (below left) and GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam (below right) , tied with 3.5 points each for 2nd to 4th, respectively by tie break.

The knockout stage will be held tomorrow, 17 May with the following Semifinal pairings
Megaranto vs. Truong Son and Tin vs Setyaki. The winners will battle for gold and silver medals while the two losing players will share bronze medals.

In the women’s division IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen (above left) and WIM Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong (above right), both of Vietnam, finished in a tied at 4 points each in the 5-round Swiss. WGM Gong Qianyun of Singapore (below left) and WCM Sien Jia Ru of Malaysia (below right) finished 3rd and 4th with 3.5 points each.
