Palau Chess Federation was founded in 2003, became a member of FIDE in 2005 and became a Non-Profit Organization in 2006.

Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., Santiago Tan, Jr. , Tito Cabunagan, Paquito Suringa, Jr., Jeffrey Balbalosa, Roberto Hernandez, Rustum Cabuso, Angelo Salvadora, Dennis Gonzales and Gonzalo Escapatoria + 20 more in the FIDE Rating List of Jan. 2019.

 

  1. Tell us about the leader(s) in your National Chess Federation and their vision for chess in your country

President–Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps; Vice President–Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr.; General Secretary–Roberto Hernandez; Treasurer–Dennis Gonzales; Board of Directors–Angelica Parrado, Angelo Salvadora, Rustum Cabuso. We will bid to host the 2021 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Feb. 14-21, 2021.

 

  1. Are there major or proud accomplishments in recent years that we should know about?

During the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, 1 player from Open section (Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. earned a CM title and in the women’s section, Angelica Parrado earned her WFM title, first for Palau.

 

  1. What are your major competitions?

World Chess Olympiads, Oceania Zonal Chess Championship, U12 Youth Chess Olympiad

 

  1. Is there chess in schools and how does it work?

Palau Mission Academy (PMA) started the first Chess in School in Palau in July 30, 2017. with 16 students in the 1st Batch, 10 students in the 2nd Batch and 14 students in the 3rd Batch.

 

  1. Do you get support from your government and if so, how do they help?

No support yet from Palau government. PCF is not yet a member of Palau National Olympic Committee We applied since 2006 with help from Gary Bekker, Geoffrey Borg, Brian Jones and Jamie Kenmure.

 

  1. Finally, please tell us about your developmental programs and activities

To continue in participating in the World Chess Olympiads, Oceania Zonal Chess Championships and other Asian Championships; bid to host 2021 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in 2021, prospect of additional Chess in School.
