Round 4 of the Asian Chess Championship 2026 concluded on International Children’s Day. This year’s event is particularly notable for featuring what is likely the highest number of junior participants in the tournament’s history, with 132 young chess players competing.
To celebrate Children’s Day, the President of the Mongolian Chess Federation, G. Zandanshatar, presented gifts to all junior participants. One of the highlights of the day was an initiative led by young chess players, through which a specialized rescue device designed for saving people trapped in mining boreholes, wells, and deep shafts was commissioned in India. The device will be donated to Mongolia’s National Emergency Management Agency.
After four rounds, the Open section is jointly led with 3.5 points by Grandmasters Erdem Khubukshanov and Zhamsaran Tsydypov (Russia), Grandmaster Xiao Tong (China), International Master U. Agibilig (Mongolia), and International Master Pham Tran Gia Phuc (Vietnam). In the Women’s section, Woman FIDE Master Maria Pershina (Russia) remains the sole leader with a perfect score of 4 points.
The ceremonial first moves of Round 4 were made by Hero of Labor of Mongolia and World Champion M. Urantsetseg, and Hero of Labor of Mongolia and Olympic bronze medalist Ch. Gantsetseg. The tournament was also honored by the presence of Distinguished Artist of Mongolia J. Onon, who attended as a special guest and enjoyed the games while showing support for the participants.
The final game to finish in Round 4 was an exciting encounter between two of Mongolia’s top junior players, FIDE Master Candidate Ts. Anand and Ts. Tenuun. Their hard-fought battle lasted 5 hours and 35 minutes before ending in a draw.
