ASIAN INDIVIDUAL CC 2026: ROUND 7

The seventh day of the Asian Individual Chess Championship was about more than just competition at the board. It featured several significant events highlighting the educational and social value of chess, marking important steps toward advancing chess development in Mongolia.

One of the day’s key events was the international conference titled “Chess in Schools.” Initiated by the President of the Mongolian Chess Federation, Mr. G. Zandanshatar, the project aims to integrate chess education into the national school curriculum. During the conference, participants discussed the progress of the initiative and its future development.

The Mongolian Chess Federation is implementing its development strategy through five key pillars, one of which focuses on expanding chess nationwide and strengthening its connection with the education system. As part of this objective, efforts are underway to gradually introduce chess into the curriculum of general education schools. Under the pilot project, chess has already been officially incorporated into the curriculum of General Education School No. 1 in Ulaanbaatar, where the program has been successfully launched and is already demonstrating positive results.

Another highlight of the day was the “One Mongolia – One Move” mass chess event held at Sukhbaatar Square, bringing together more than 500 chess players. The event was designed not only to identify top performers but also to promote chess among the public, encourage children and young people to participate in intellectual sports, and inspire the next generation of champions.

The ceremonial first moves of Round 7 were made by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich, President of the International School Chess Federation Timur Turlov, President of the Mongolian Chess Federation G. Zandanshatar, and Mr. J. Baasansuren, Head of the Sports Policy Implementation Division of the State Physical Education and Sports Committee.

Meanwhile, the battle for the championship intensified on the boards. After seven rounds, Grandmasters Erdem Khubukshanov (Russia) and Xiao Tong (China) share the lead in the Open section with 6 points each. In the Women’s section, Women’s Grandmaster Afruza Khamdamova of Uzbekistan remains the sole leader.

With only a few rounds remaining, the race for the Asian Championship titles continues to heat up as Asia’s strongest chess players battle it out in Ulaanbaatar.
