Chess in Schools Program in Tonga by Oceania Chess Confederation

FIDE Instructor and FIDE Arbiter Richard Christie from New Zealand spent last week in Tonga visiting Schools and talking to teachers and parents about developing chess programs in the kingdom of Tonga. This was supported by Zone President Shaun Press and the Oceania Chess Confederation and follows up on FIDE Development Director GM Nigel Short’s recent visit to get a Tonga Chess Federation established. The Director of the Ministry of Education supported the Tongan Chess in Schools program. Richard Christie and Mrs. ‘Alisi Taumoepeau, Tongan Federation Development Officer, visited schools in Tongatapu during this week to develop chess in schools for children.

They held at the Hotel Nuku’alofa a chess trainer course for teachers, parents and the public, who wanted to learn how to teach chess to children.
