Vietnam men finished with 8.5 points followed by Indonesia with 6.5 points for the silver medal. The Philippines tallied 6 points for the bronze medal. Here are the team crosstable and individual results.

In the women’s division, Indonesia finished alone with 6 points for the gold medal followed by Philippines with 5 points for silver. Malaysia and Vietnam tied at 4.5 points including all tie breaks and each received bronze medals.

Vietnam Scores Double Victory in SEA Games Blitz Individual Championship

Vietnamese IM Le Tuan Minh won the men’s division while compatriot IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen won the women’s division in the SEA Games Blitz Individual Chess Championship held 20th May 2022 in Ha Long City, Vietnam. IM Tin Jingyao topped the 5-round Swiss preliminaries in a tie with four others at 3.5 points each before going into the knockout semifinal and final matches.

The Semifinals paired IM Le Tuan Minh of Vietnam vs. GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia and GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam vs. IM Tin Jingyao of Singapore.

In the final, the first game was drawn then Le Tuan Minh won the second game to win gold. Le Quang Liem won silver while Tin and Megaranto received bronze medals.

In the Women’s division, WIM Chelsie Sihite of Indonesia topped the Swiss preliminaries with 4.5 points followed by WGM Janele Mae Frayna of the Philippines with 4 points, Pham Le Thao Nguyen with 3.5 points and WGM Gong Qianyun of Singapore with 3 points,

The Semifinals paired Chelsie Sihite vs Gong Qianyun and Janelle May Frayna with Pham Le Thao Nguyen.

In the finals the first game was drawn then Pham Le Thao Nguyen won the second game for the gold medal. Chelsie Sihite won the silver medal while Janelle Mae Frayna and Gong Qianyun received bronze medals.

 

Vinuda Wins Sri Lanka National Youth Under 14 Championship

Vinuda Shenal Gunathilake of Royal College Colombo won the Sri Lanka National Youth Under 14 Years Chess Championships 2022 scoring 6 points out of 7 possible games.. Vinuda won with the better tie breaker over four more players, Disara Tennakoon, Malisha Weeratunge, Disal Weerasekara and DRBG Galkotuwa. Vinuda beat JSW Basnayake, Thathika Waduge, DCBK Senevirathne, Budmina Hettigoda, Devindya Oshini Gunawardena and drew with HMJR Herath and Disara Tennakoon to reach 6 points and the Championship title with the Gold Medal. Disara Tennakoon of Dharmaraja Vidyalaya won the 2nd place with the Silver medal with a score of 6 points and the tie breaker out of Seven Games. Disara beat GGK Deshapriya, Yasiru Minthaka, Yasindu Perera, Lohan Atulugamage and HMJR Hearath while took draws with Thisarindu Induwara and the Champion Vinuda Shenal.

The third place went to Maleesha Savindu Weerasekara of DS Senanayake College, Colombo also with 6 points and the better tie breaker than other two. He beat Hiruja Nethdinu, Nisal Thilakarathne, Sithika Sandesh, Lohan Atulugama and Dinujaya Kodituwakku and drew with Chenith Gunawickrama and Ruwanmith Gamage to earn 6 points and the Bronze Medal.  Disal Nimsara Weerasekara (Sri Chandananda Buddhist School) and DRBG Galkotuwa(Dharmaraja College) also scored 6 points out of 7 games but had to satisfy himself with the 4th and the 5th places.

The National Youth chess Championships 2022 is one of the most prestigious Chess events conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka for the youth Chess Players in the Country. The event is hold in 12 Events in 6 age groups, Under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years with Open and Women separately from 20th April to 31st May 2022.. The preliminary events were held in 19 Districts March 2022 and the qualified players of the district events are playing in this Sri Lanka National Youth Chess Championships 2022. Five events are over so far and 7 more events are expected to happen.

The New Zealand Chess Federation has the honour to invite all National Chess Federations in Asia to participate in the 2022 Asian Seniors Chess Championships for over-50 and over 65-years old and for Women over- 50, from October 14 (arrival) to October 22 (departure), which will be held in the Auckland Rose Park Hotel, Auckland, New Zealand. The top three players will qualify for the 2023 World Seniors Championship with personal
rights and their places will not be substituted.

Saudi Universities Chess Tournament

The Saudi Arabian University Sports Union, in cooperation with the Saudi Chess Federation has organized the Saudi Universities Chess Tournament in Al-Baha city during the period of May 12th to the 14th 2022. Ahmed Alruhaili of the Islamic University won the 1st prize while Abdulrahman Aroob of Kind Abdulaziz University had won the 2nd place and Mustafa Al-Khabbaz of King Fahad Petroleum University came in 3rd.

On the Women’s side, Muznah Al-Quraishi of Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University came 1st and Leen Al-Dossary of Princess Norah University came 2nd and Sarah Ishaaq of King Abdulaziz University took the 3rd place.

Dr. Khalid Al-Muzaini, the president of the Union, along with the secretary general Dr. Abdulelah Al-Salawi has awarded the winners with medals and cups and congratulated participants and winners. Both expressed their gratitude for the successful cooperation with the Saudi Chess Federation.

Philippines and Indonesia won silver and bronze in the men’s while Vietnam and Philippines won silver and bronze in the women’s, respectively. IM Michael Concio Rules 1st Relampagos FIDE Chess Cup

IM Michael “Jako” Concio Jr. emerged champion in the  1st Relampagos FIDE Chess Cup held last month at the Panabo Chess Park, Panabo City in Davao Del Norte. Visit chess-results.com for round by round results.

Concio scored 7.5 points on 7 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss to rule the single round robin FIDE standard tournament.
“I just persisted in training and prepared,” said the 16 years old Concio, a 11th grader at the Dasmarinas Integrated High School.

John Ray Batucan settled for second with 5.5 points. NM Macacana Macala, NM Aglipay Oberio and National Master Henry Roger Lopez were tied at 3rd to 5th places with 5.0 points each.

NM Alexander Lupian wound up sixth with 4.5 points. Rounding up to the top 10 were FM Roel Abelgas (4.0 points), eighth National Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca (3.5 points), ninth Woman National Master Jerlyn Mae San Diego (3.0 points) and tenth Arena GM Fletch Archer Arado (2.0 points).

The three day event, April 22, 23 and 24 was hosted by City Government of Panabo headed by it’s Mayor Jose Relampagos and Atty. Janris Jay “Jigs” Relampagos and supported by Emmanuel Eva and Multicar applying the 60 minutes plus 30 seconds increment standard time control format. Chief Arbiter was NA Rowelyn Joy Acedo.

Vietnam edged Indonesia 1.5-0.5 in the first round then were held to a surprise 1:1 draw by Thailand. Vietnam blanked Myanmar 2:0 in the third round to tally 4.5 points.

The Philippines scored1.5-.5 against Thailand and Myanmar in the first and second rounds then were held to a 1″1 draw by Malaysia in the third round to follow with 4 points.

Indonesia is in close 3rd with 3 points from .5 point against Vietnam in the 1st round. 1/5 points against Malaysia in the second round and draw with Thailand in the third round.

In the Women’s division, Indonesia blanked Malaysia 2:0 in the first round, beat Vietnam 1.5-.5 in the second round and drew with the Philippines 1:1 in the third round to lead with 4.5 points.

Vietnam edged the Philippines 1.5-.5 in the first round then lost to Indonesia in the second but blanked Thailand 2:0 in the third round to stay in striking distance with 4 points.

5th Mayor Darel Dexter T. Uy P’gsalabuk Chess Cup

DIPOLOG CITY, Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines —Johnnel Balquin of Cagayan de Oro City scored 1.5 points in the last two rounds to emerge as the overall champion in the 5th Mayor Darel Dexter T. Uy P’gsalabuk Chess Cup at the Museo Dipolog in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte last Saturday, May 14`, 2022.

Balquin defeated Allan Cantonjos of Gingoog City in the sixth and penultimate round then halved the point with 1996 Philippine Junior Champion FIDE Master Robert Suelo Jr. of Quezon City in the seventh and final round.
He finished with 6.5 points on account of six wins and one draw in the seven-round rapid chess tournament the event was organized by the Dipolog City Chess Association headed by it’s president Ronald Truno Solon and tournament director Michel Jackson Ambuang in cooperation with Busog 28 CEO Michael “Mike” Tamonan, Mam Cendy Magallanes, Ranell Cendy Ticketing and former vice mayor Bebs Cheng.

Balquin opened his campaign in sizzling fashion, defeating Ranzeth Marco Magallanes of Dipolog City in the first round, Joselito Rojas of Dipolog City in the second round, National Master Quirino Sagario of Manila in the third round, Allan Salientes of Cebu in the fourth round, National Master Joey Albert Florendo of Zamboanga City in the fifth round, and Cantonjos in the sixth round before splitting the point with Suelo in the final round. Balquin was awarded the top prize of P20,000.

Three players – Florendo, Rodney Opada of Cagayan de Oro City and Suelo– shared second to fourth places with 6.0 points to receive P10,000, P8,000 and P5,000, respectively.\

Jan Francis Mirano of Aklan, Cantonjos and Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe of Pagadian City got P3,000 P1,000 and P1,000 for winding up fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively with 5.5 points apiece.

Rounding up to the top 17 who got 5.0 points each were Judge and FIDE Master Rosendo Bandal Jr. , Julius Dan Augustine Ablin, Madronio Fuentes, Marian Calimbo, Mhilter Edombingo, NM Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr., John Cyrus Borce, Geronimo Romarate, Rocky Rocamora and NM Levi Martuna.
