Sri Lanka and Bangladesh Academies Share Lead

The National Chess Academy of Sri Lanka (above left) and Elegant International Chess Academy of Bangladesh (above right), share the early lead after two rounds of the Asian Academies Hybrid Chess Championship on Tornelo.

The event is hosted by the Bangladesh Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE. Eight teams are playing a single round robin over four boards with board 4 reserved for girls. Teams are composed of players under-18 years of age. Games are played 10am daily (Dubai time) with time control of 60 minutes plus increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.

Fair Play rules are strictly implemented. There is a Local Chief Arbiter and Local Technical Assistant in each event. Players share screen and Task manager and are viewed by videocam and panoramic cameras. Opposing teams are in the same breakout room and can watch each other.

Sri Lanka National B and Women’s National B Chess Championships 2021

The much awaited event by the Sri Lankan top players, Sri Lanka National B and Women’s National B Chess Championships 2021 will be held 27th & 28th November, 3rd, 4th and 5th of December 2021 at Public Library Colombo with all health guidelines.

The Eligibility

The IMs, FMs / WIMs, WFMs and players having more than 1700 ratings, girls with more than 1400 ratings are directly qualified to the respective event. All players played in SL National B Chess Championships 2020 are also eligible for the event

Wild Card Entries – If any other player feels that he is suitable to play the event, he may apply giving his recent performance. If organizers accept, they may play with a special entry fee.

The events are 9 rounds in Swiss System. The schedule will be announced later. The time control is 90 minutes + 30 Seconds per each move played. The tournament is Internationally Rated.

The reigning National Chess Champions, Ranindu Dilshaan Liyanage and  Top Ranked Harshana Thilakarathne are qualified to play the National Championships 2021 Finals directly. Therefore, 12 players will be qualified and 2 more will be kept on standbye for the finals.

Since Nethmi Fernando, the Women’s National Chess Champion has opted not to play, 14 players will be qualified from Women’s National B.

Registration can be done by sending the name, FIDE ID and the contact details to  cfslchessevents@gmail.com  before 12.00 am on 26th November 2021. Late entries are not possible.

Phiilppine Paragames Chess Championship

MANILA—Iloilo City-native John Franz De Asis ruled the just-concluded 2021 Philippine Sports Commission–Pilipinas Para Games (PPG) Online Chess Competition for people with disabilities virtually held at Tornelo Platform on Sunday, November 21, 2021.

De Asis collected 5.5 points on five wins and one draw to win the six-round tournament and brought home the gold medal, toy mascot and the P30,000 top prize in the P1 (Physical Impaired)-Men’s category. De Asis scored victories against Apollo Cabilan in the first round, Sean Mervick Tiu in the second round,  Rogelio Clemente in the third round, Sol Tiamzon in the fourth round and Ronnie Villa in the fifth and penultimate round.
He split the point with Eric Abanco in the sixth and final round.

Abanco, the pride of Bacolod City, meantime took the second spot with 5 points for runner-up prize of P20,000, silver medal and toy mascot.

In third place was Jordaine Tupaz of Talisay City with similar 5 points but lower tie break to settle for P10,000, bronze medal and toy mascot,.

Also with 5 points were 4th placer Alexis Elinon and 5th placer Joseph Gregana who pocketed P1,000 each plus medals.

Rounding up the the top ten (10) winners who also got P1,000 each were sixth Ralph Anthony Velasco (4.5 pts), seventh placer Ronnie Villa (4 pts.), eighth placer Sol Tiamzon (4 pts.), ninth placer Ricardo Merano (4 pts.) and tenth placer Max Dave Tellor (4 pts.).

In the distaff side, Aime Dumagpi twice defeated Clarence Oreña to claim the P1-Women’s top prize.

Other notable winners were Geronimo Torres (gold), Kenneth Namisato (silver) and Emmanuel Closas Jr. (bronze) for the B1 totally blind men’s class, Yoland Pespes (gold), Kyla Jane Langue (silver) and Abigail Magsanoc (bronze) for the B1 totally blind women’s side, Mark Christian Evangelista (gold), Ireneo Melchor Pizzaro Jr. (silver) and Abraham Peligro (bronze) for the B2 visually impaired mens portion, Siera Mae Requiron (gold), Regina Abogado (silver) and Marilou Lucero (bronze) for the B2 visually impaired women’s category.

The three-day event was inspired by the success of the country’s Para woodpushers on the international stage, producing a first-ever Filipino world champion in the 2020 International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) titlist FIDE Master Sander Severino and a fourth-place finish in the team competition of the recent 4th World Chess Championship.

“We are launching this project in a continued effort to address our need for a truly comprehensive grassroots sports development program for our para-athletes, and continuously harness their full potential,” said PSC Oversight Commissioner for para-athletes Arnold Agustin.

Laguna Heroes advance to north semis in PCAP playoffs

MANILA—The Laguna Heroes continued their championship quest after dominating the Davao Chess Wizzards in a sweep, 16-5 and 14.5-6.5 to advance to the northern division semifinals of the third conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 virtually held at Chess.com Platform.
The Laguna Heroes totally outclassed their opponent as they just smashed the Chess Wizzards two matches in a row.
It was a fine start for Laguna as Davao fought hard in the Blitz category of the first match but yielded, 6-1. In the Rapid category, the Heroes won five out of the seven playing boards.
Grandmaster Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr. toppled National Master Aglipay Oberio after 62 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening, Grandmaster John Paul Gomez subdued Arnel Aton after 46 moves of Benoni defense, Michella Concio defeated Woman National Master Ella Grace Moulic after 43 moves of London System Opening, Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo trounced Anthony Mosqueda after 56 moves of Sicilian defense and Candidate Master Arjie Bayangat beat Lydon Sombilon after 35 moves of Queens Gambit Declined.
Davao tried acting in a new way, especially more quickly than before in the second encounter but the experience and flawless performance of the Heroes allowed them to gain the edge to finish the game, 14.5-6.5.
“We are happy for having a fine start in the knock out stage. Beating Davao is a big motivation to us,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA.
Backed up by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, and Rotary Club of Nuvali, the Laguna Heroes will take on the tough San Juan Predators in the semifinals who swept the Isabela’s Knights of Alexander, 15.5-5.5 and  18-3, earlier.
The other semis pairing in the Northern Division pit the Pasig City King Pirates and the Caloocan Loadmanna Knights, who posted contrasting wins.
Pasig dominated the Rizal Batch Towers, 16-5 and 17.5-3.5, while Caloocan survived the Armageddon duel against the Manila Indios Bravos, 0-3, 13-8, 2-1.
Iloilo, meanwhile, arranges a semis date with Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warrios, who bested Toledo City Trojans, 12-9 and 3-0. Lapu-Lapu City, on the other hand nipped Singapore, 9-12, 13.5-7.5 and 2-1.
Camarines Soaring Eagle edged Paralympics, 11-10 and 12-9, to clash with Penang (Malaysia) in the other Final Four pairing. Penang waylaid Negros, 10-11, 12-9 and 3-0

Sri Lanka National Online Major Division Chess Championship 2021

Central Province Open, Western 2 Open, Western 1 Women’s and Northern Women’s events

After a short pause, the Major Division event of the National Championship cycle has started with the participation of rated players and the players who performed well in the respective Novices events.

At the end of the day, Gunsekara W A N Senpathi (photo above) of St. Sylweater’s College was able to clinch the peak of the Central Open event while Wiratunga Jenith of Trinity College Kandy and Sithila Mithashana Gangewatte of St. Sylweater’s College followed him by winning 3.5 points out of the four rounds played today.

In the meantime, Gunathilake M D Vinuda Shenal (photo above) of Royal College, Colombo was able to assume the first place of the Western II open, which consists of Gampaha and Kaluthara Districts with a total of 4 points out of 4 games while due to the lack of half a point, Weerasinghe W Yasiru of Mahanama College and Amarathunga Kosala Sandeepa of JMC International School, Kaluthara had to placate with the second and third places respectively.

 

Concluding the first day of the Western 2 Women’s event, Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana (photo above left) of Pushpadana College, the newly Crowned under 10 Years Girls World Chess Champion and Haritha Shavina Thillainathan (above right) of Bishop’s College were able to step into the second day with the advantage of being having full points of 4 out of possible 4 games at the end of day 1. Also, Pallie Esha Mishela (Visakha Vidyalaya) and Thanujana D M Sinaly (Gothami Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo) placed as the third 3rd position with 3.5 points out of 4 games.

In the Northern Women’s event, P Thishanuga (photo above) of J/ Wembady Girls High School, Jaffna was able to take the lead of the tournament by winning 4points out of 4 games while G H S Sanulya (Royal Primary School, Polonnaruwa), Sutheswaran Abinaya (Scorpian Chess Kindom), Narthavi S(J/ Wembady Girls High School, Jaffna), and Miruthy (Scorpian Chess Kindom) are following her by scoring 3 points out of the 4 games they played against their respective opponents.

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka is organizing a comprehensive Online Rapid National Chess Championship Cycle for the first time in Sri Lanka started from the 1st week of June 2021. The 7 Novices Division events and 7 Women’s Novices Division events were finished on the 15th of August 2021 successfully.

This National Chess Championship Cycle is the selection event for the International Online Rapid Chess Championships in the future. The event will help all Chess players to stay at home at this difficult time with supporting to grow their Chess Strength. The event is being held on the Chess.com platform with he fair play regulations approved by FIDE.

The Time Control is 15 minutes + 10-second increment for each move played

.The Remaining Major Division events will be held in Next 2 Weeks ends:

9th & 10th October 2021 – Western I (Open), North Western & Uva with Rathnapura (Open), Western II (Women), and Southern (Women)

Eligibility – Rating Greater than 1199 and less than 1899 and selected players from relevant Novices Chess Championship for the Open Section.

Rating Greater than 1099 and less than 1599 for Women’s events and qualified players from Women Novices in the respective region.

The Qualification to Online National Premier is that for the first 20 players in the starting rank list 10 players will qualify and for every subsequent 5 players, an additional 1 player will qualify.

No of Qualifiers = 10 + {(T-20)/5} T-Total Players

f there are 50 players in an event 16 players are qualified.

11 year old Iranian Wins Asian Amateur Open Online Chess Championship

Eleven-year-old Sina Movahed of Iran won the Asian Amateur Open Online Chess Championship alone with 8 points out of 9 rounds in the tournament hosted by the Oman Chess Committee under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation 12-18 November 2021 on Tornelo. A total of 175 players from 22 countries competed in the 9-round Swiss. See results of women’s division.

Thirteen-year-old Sai Surapaneni Chidvilash of India won the silver with 7.5 points, ahead by tie break over Allan Pason, 24, of the Philippines who won bronze.

Movahed Sina won last year the Under-10 division of the FIDE World Cadets & Youth Rapid Championships 2020. At the age of 6, he saw a brochure of the Hamidavi Chess Schools and asked his father to enrol him. Hamidavi was his first coach. As he improved he was coached by FM Asgari who saw him become Asian Champion. Today he is coached by GM Darini and GM Idani and studies chess 6-7 hours a day and practices online. Movahed Sina of Iran and Sai Surapameri Chidvilash of India remain unbeaten after six rounds of the Asian Amateur Chess Championship hosted by the Oman Chess Committee under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation. A total of 175 players from 22 countries are competing in the 9-round Swiss.

Sina defeated erstwhile co-leader CM Bhavesh Mahajan of India while Sai Surapameri Chidvilash won over 10th seed Amjad Fahmi of Yemen for his sixth point and a tie for the lead. The two leaders face each other in the seventh round.
