Indian IM Sankalp Gupta became the unbeaten champion in the Joytu Sheikh Hasina International Grand Masters Chess Tournament held 19-27 September 2021 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. A total of 62 players including Grandmasters, International Masters and International Women’s Masters from different countries including Bangladesh participated in the 9-day 9-round Swiss-League competition.
The Prize-Distribution and closing ceremony of the Joytu Sheikh Hasina International Grandmasters Chess Tournament 2021, sponsored by the Canadian University of Bangladesh and organised by the Bangladesh Chess Federation. The event marked the occasion of the 75th birth anniversary of Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, MP. It was held at the Hotel Sheraton Dhaka.
Mr. Hasan Mahmud, MP Hon’ble Information Minister of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners.
Mr. Md. Zahid Ahsan Russel, MP, State Minister for Youth and Sports of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh was present as the special guest.
Dr. Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian University of Bangladesh presided over the ceremony.

Ruhul Amin, Managing Director of Saif Powertech Limited and Vice President of Bangladesh Chess Federation, Mr. Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation and President FIDE Zone-3.2, Dr. Shoeb Riaz Alam, Additional DIG and Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation and Mr. Mainuddin Moneem, Managing Director of the Abdul Monem Group gave speeches in the ceremony.
Mr. Md Musaraf Husain Molla, Additional Secretary of Youth & Sports Ministry, Mr. KM Shahidullah, Vice President of Bangladesh Chess Federation and Masudur Rahman Mallick Dipu, Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation were present on the stage.
Champion IM Sankalp earned 7 points to clinch the title. Five players scored six and a half points each. In the tie-breaking system among them, India’s IM Mitrava Guha became runner-up, India’s IM Aronyak Ghosh became third, India’s IM Sayantan Das became 4th fourth, Bangladesh’s GM Ziaur Rahman became fifth and Iran’s GM Mosadeghpour Masoud became sixth. Indian IM Mohammad Nubairshah Shaikh became 7th, IM Neelash Saha became 8th and GM Vadim Malakhatko of Belgium became 9th with 6 points each.
For the special prizes of Bangladeshi players: GM Enamul Hossain Razib came first with five and a half points, FM Sheikh Nasir Ahmed came second with five points, FM Debaraj Chatterjee became third IM Abu Sufian Shakil came fourth and FM Md Taibur Rahman became fifth with with four and a half points each. The ninth or final round match was held today (Monday) at Hotel 71’s Aamrakanan.

MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas top chess player Samson Chhiu Chhin Lim ruled the Grandmaster Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Memorial Open Chess Tournament virtually held at Lichess.org Platform on Sunday, September 26, 2021.
Lim’s superior tie break points earned him the coveted title and P10,000 top cash prize in the one day event hosted by Dr. Joe Balinas and Engr. Antonio “Uncle Paps” Balinas of the organizing Bayanihan Chess Club and sponsored by GM Balinas and Family.
Lim and Chester Neil Reyes, both tallied 17.5 points in this 20 Rounds Swiss System Bullet Online Tournament.
The 21 year old Lim is playing under the guidance of UST head coach GM candidate Ronald Dableo and GM Darwin Laylo.
The 16 year old Reyes, the pride of National University on the other hand, received the runner-up purse of P6,000 for his efforts.
In third place was FIDE Master Alekhine “Bbking” Nouri, who took home P5,000. He was followed by National Master Mark Jay Daños Bacojo for fourth place with P4,000 and FIDE Master Robert Suelo Jr., fifth place and P3,000.

MANILA, Philippines—Laguna Heroes extended its winning streak in the third conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) after edging the Cavite Spartans via a 11.5-9.5 victory on Saturday night, September 25, 2021 virtually held at Chess.com Platform.
Laguna prevailed over Cavite in the rapid game (8-6), with two-time Asian Junior champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr., Grandmaster John Paul Gomez, Michella Concio and Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo winning their matches to climb to a 6-1 win-loss slate in the Northern Division.
Despite one pawn down, Barcenilla escaped in a drawish position against Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. in 41 moves of a King’s Indian defense, Gomez toppled Jaypie Bolado in 42 moves of a Slav defense, Concio beat Melizah Ruth Carreon via forfeiture due to the latter’s poor internet connection while Lorenzo beat Richard Cornell Manzano in 46 moves of a Sicilian defense, Dragon Variation.
Eliodoro “Louie” Polistico, Clark Dela Torre and Lourecel Hernandez Ecot spearheaded Spartans.
Polistico subdued FIDE Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad in 38 moves of an English Opening, Dela Torre trounced Vince Angelo Medina in 50 moves of a Vangeet Opening while Ecot dismantled Arjie Bayangat in 78 moves of a Modern defense.
“We’re happy with the win. It was a tough match against Cavite,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owners of the Laguna Heroes together with Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA.
The Heroes were held to a 3.5-3.5 draw in the blitz category, with Barcenilla, Gomez and Lorenzo winning while Bayangat settled for a draw.
Backed up by Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, KALARO and Rotary Club of Nuvali, the Laguna Heroes also beat Cagayan Kings, 15.5-5.5.
Up next for the Heroes are the Isabela Knight Raiders and the San Juan Predators on Wednesday.

RULES & REGULATIONS
The Tournament will be held from 19th to 27th October, 2021 on the occasion of birthday celebration of Shahid Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of Nation Banghabandu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The event will be played in accordance with the following rules and regulations:
ELIGIBILITY & PARTICIPATION
Invited each Federation from FIDE send their GM and IM only. It’s invitational International GM Chess event
PLAYING CONDITIONS
The tournament shall be conducted as a Swiss System competition of 9 rounds and will be played according to FIDE regulations.
The time control is 90 minutes for the whole game an addition of 30 seconds per move starting from move one.
TRAVELLING EXPENSES
Bangladesh Chess Federation will provide Air Fare to all foreign Grndmasters (GM). Air travel expenses for the International Masters (IM) shall be borne by themselves.
We will arrange transfer between Hazrat Shahjalal international airport and hotel.
ACCOMMODATION
Bangladesh Chess Federation will provide free accommodation, food and local transportation to foreign GM’s and IM’s.

Vietnam dominated the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship Girls division winning 10 gold medals followed by China and Mongolia winning one gold medal apiece. Over 300 girls from 14 countries competed in the Asian Youth Chess Championship Girls division held over the weekend of 24-26 September on Tornelo. The Open (boys) division will be held over the coming weekend of 1st to 3rd October.

Participating in the tournament are players from Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam. Visit chess-results.com for round by round results and to download games.
The tournament is organized by the Thailand Chess Association under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation. The champions qualify to the FIDE Online Cadets and Youth Rapid Grand Prix next month to compete against the best from other continents.
The Organizing Committee implemented FIDE Fair Play Rules strictly and a number of players found violating Fair Play regulations were forfeited for some or all of their games. Arbiters from Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Philippines monitored players.

Inaugural Online Rapid National Chess Championship Cycle 2021 (Open/Women’s)
The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka is organizing a comprehensive Online Rapid Chess Championship Cycle for the first time in Sri Lanka which started from 1st week of June 2021. The 7 Novices Division events and 7 Women’s Novices Division event were finished on the 15th of August 2021 successfully.
This event is the selection event for the International Online Rapid Chess Championships this year. The Event will help all Chess players to stay at home at this difficult time with support to grow their Chess Strength. The event is be held on the Chess.com platform with all the fair play regulations approved by FIDE. The Time Control will be 15 minutes + 10 second increment for each move played.
The Major Division events will be held in 3 Week ends:
2nd & 3rd October 2021 – Western II (Open), Central With Kegalle (Open), Western I (Women) and Northern (Women)
9th & 10th October 2021 – Western I (Open), North Western & Uva with Kegalle (Open), Western II (Women) and Southern (Women)
16th & 17th October 2021- Northern (Open), Southern Open Central With Kegalle (Women), and North Western & Uva with Ratnapura (Women)

Eligibility – Rating Greater than 1199 and less than 1899 and selected players from relevant Novices Chess Championship for the Open Section. Rating Greater than 1099 and less than 1599 for Women’s event and qualified players from Women Novices in the respective region.
The Qualification to Online National Premier is that for the first 20 players in the starting rank list 10 players will qualify and for every subsequent 5 players an additional 1 player will qualify.
No of Qualifiers = 10 + {(T-20)/5} T-Total Players
If there are 50 players in an event 16 players are qualified.

Fair Play
Players can use only Laptops or Desktop with a webcam to play the games. In all times of play in progress, players should join in the zoom meeting with the screen and task Manager shared with the tournament arbiters. The Technical Regulations will be sent to the registered players individually.
All fair play measures are taken during the event and the games after each round will be sent to the Chess.com and FIDE experts for fair play checking. If any player is found guilty in any form of these checking, he/ she will be banned from all types of Chess for 2 years.

The Indian delegation won an astounding 8 golds, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals to dominate the Western Asia Youth Chess Championships held 18-20 September online on Tornelo.
Iran and Sri Lanka finished with 2 gold medals each but Iran grabbed overall runner-up with 3 silvers against Sri Lanka’s one silver medal. IM Harshana Thilakarathne (above left) won the gold medal in the highest group, Under-18 while countrymate Oshini Devindya Gunawardena (above right) lived up to her billing by winning the gold in the Girls Udner-10. The Asian Chess Federation shall nominate the winners of each age group to the FIDE World Youth and Cadets Chess Grand Prix 2021 to be conducted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in October.

Host Sri Lanka wins Two Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze!
Sri Lanka number 1 ranked, International Master, Harshana Thilakarathne won the Gold medal in the most important under 18 years (Open) category of the Western Asian Online Youth Chess Championships concluded on 20th September 2021. Harshana who is from Maliyadeva College played excellent Chess being the leader from the 1st round and won the Gold medal convincingly. He beat Aljabari Mohammad.A (Palastine), Radwan Mahmoud J (Palastine), FIDE Master Anees M Mohamed(India), Mazhkenov Alisher (Kazakhstan), Dhingra Aaditya(India) and Khazaei Parviz(Iran) and drew with Bosagh Zadeh Alireza and (Iran) and Ranjan Aryan(India) and lost one game to our own National player LMST De Silva to score 7 points out of possible 9 games.
The young Oshini Devindya Gunawardena who is the current under 10 Years Girls World Chess Champion showed her supremacy by winning the under 10 Category Gold medal of this Championships. Though unfortunately she lost her 2nd game to Indian player, R Charudharshini(India) she recovered well scoring wins with all other players Bhuchar Ridhima(India), A Anjana (India), Reya Banker(India), Gunesh Dessai Saeeja (India), GHS Sanulya (Sri Lanka), Akbari Rosha (Iran), S Ukkali Krupa(India) and Dongre Anshika(India) to score 8 points out of 9 games and win the event. Oshini is from Furguson High School, Ratnapura and is coached by Mr. Akhila Kavinda, a prominent Chess trainer in the country.
The Sri Lankan prominent youth player in the National Chess Team, Susal De Silva of Nalanda College made the Silver in under 18 category by winning with the champion in the crucial penultimate round. He also suffered two early loses in 2nd and 3rd rounds to Ranjan Arayan(India) and Kusalwin Liyanage and he made a miracle by scoring 6 ½ points out of rest of 7 games to win the Silver Medal. He beat Al Busaidi Hamood(Oman), Radwan Mahmoud J(Palastine), Khalifa Essa Albalooshi(UAE), Dhingra Aaditya (India), Harshana and Mazhkenov Alisher(Kazakhatan) and drew with Khazaei Parviz(Iran) to score 6 ½ points out of 9 games.
M Esandi Newansa of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda made the Bronze Medal in the Under 12 years Girls category scoring 6 ½ points out of 9 games. She beat Anujana Hasandi (Sri lanka), Sachi Jain(India), Rouda Essa Alserkal(UAE), Sirin Kalyani(India), Ebrahimi Rashti Asal (Iran) and Abaeva Aiana and drew with Alavi Mahsa(Iran) and lost 2 games to Imani Adrina and Davari Sara both from Iran for her total of 6 ½ out of 9 games..
India dominated the event by winning 8 Gold Medals in Under 18 Girls by Prachiti Chandratreya with 7 ½ points out of 9 games, under 16 Open and Girls by FM Krishna S Rohit with a score of 7 ½ out of 9 games and WIM Divya Deshmuk with 9 points out of 9 games, Under 14 Open & Girls by Singh Sahib with a score of 7 ½ out of 9 games and M Sreekumar Anupam with a score of 8 ½ points out of 9, Under 12 Open by Mrinmoy Rajkowa, Under 10 years Open by Ethan Zaz with 8 points out of 9 and Under 8 Open by B Vishruth with a score of 8 points out of 9 games. Iran won Gold medal in Under 12 Girls by Davari Sara with a perfect score of 9 out of 9 games and under 8 Girls by Mirzakhani Bahar with 7 ½ point out of 9 games.
The western Asian Online Youth Chess Championships conducted by the Asian Chess Federation and organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was held from 18th – 20th September 2021. Close to 900 players participated in this biggest online Chess Event of Asia on Tornelo platform. The time control was 15 minutes + 10 seconds for each move played.
The Countries of Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Maldives, Nepal, Oman, Palestine, Syria, UAE, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka participated in the event.

Learn how to manage Zoom and popular chess tournament Host Internet Platforms such as Tornelo, Chess.com, Lichess, Chess24, PlayChess and others. The course is open to NAs, FAs and IAs.
Registration fee is $60 for course and exam. Successful participants will receive Asian Chess Federation Certificate necessary to be arbiter in Asian online championships.
