Sri Lanka’s Oshini Devinya Gunawardena beat Megan Althia Paragua of USA convincingly in the Finals of the Online FIDE World Youth Chess Championship 2021 and became the Online FIDE World Youth Chess Champion 2021 – Under 10 Girls.

Ivan Travis Cu Wins 1st ITC Bicol (Philippines) Online Blitz Tournament

MANILA, Philippines—National Master Ivan Travis Cu ruled via tiebreak the 1st ITC Bicol Chess Players Team online blitz tournament virtually held on Monday, August 30, 2021 at Lichess.org Platform.

The 12 year old Cu, tied for first with National Master Carlo Lorena at 6 points apiece in the 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment time control format which attracted 61 woodpushers. With the higher tiebreak points, Cu took the title while Lorena finished second.

Cu, a Grade 7 student of Xavier School, San Juan City under the guidance of coach IA Rolly Yutuc scored victories over Harold Alianza in the first round, Alex Amatonding in the second round, Marvid Zuniga in the third round, National Master Carlo Lorena in the fourth round, National Master Glennen Artuz in the fifth round and Joeven Polsotin in the sixth and penultimate round. He lost to Jess Calabia in the seventh and final round.

Last Monday, August 30, 2021 celebrating the National Heroes Day and 125th Araw ng Pinaglabanan, Cu receives a Plaque of Recognition from the City Government of San Juan, as per City Resolution No. 110, Series of 2021, for being recognized as a National Master for Chess.

“We would like to express our thanks to the City of San Juan, headed by our city leaders, Hon. Mayor Francis Zamora, Hon. Vice Mayor Warren Villa, and the esteemed members of the City Council. It is an honor and privilege for our family, most especially for our son, Ivan to have been recognized for this achievement. It will surely inspire him to continue in striving to improve in his sport.  On this memorable occasion, we would like to share this award with our present day heroes, the frontliners who labor tirelessly to keep us safe, and our fellow San Juaneños. It shall be recalled that last August 24, 2021, Cu topped the National Master Ronald Llavanes Birthday Arena competition (Individual Tournament).

Shahid Captain Sheikh Kamal International Online Chess Tournament 2021

Sheikh Kamal was the eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one of the organisers of the Great Liberation War, pioneer of modern sports in Bangladesh and cultural personality

On the occasion of his 72nd birth anniversary and under the financial patronage of Saif Powertech Limited, the prize giving ceremony of the competition was held Monday at the Sky Ball-Room of Hotel La Meridian. Honorable Minister of State for Youth Sports, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Mr. Md. Zahid Ahsan Russell, MP was present as the Chief Guest and distributed prizes among the winners of Bangladesh and gave virtual prizes to the recipients of foreign awards.

Dr. Benazir Ahmed, Inspector General of Bangladesh Police and President of Bangladesh Chess Federation and President of South Asian Chess Council, Mr. Tarafdar Md. Ruhul Amin, Managing Director Saif Pawatech Limited and Vice President of Bangladesh Chess Federation were present as special guests.

Mr. Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation and President of FIDE Zone 3.2 and Mr. Casto Abundo, Executive Director of Asian Chess Federation gave speech.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, K M Shahidullah, Vice President of Bangladesh Chess Federation, Dr. Shoeb Reaz Alam, Additional D. I. G. and Joint Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation, Masudur Rahman Mallik Dipu, Joint SEcretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation, Executive Members Md. Moniruzzaman Palash, Kamruzzaman Bhuiyan, Md. Alauddin Saju, Zakir Ahmed, International Organizer Mahmuda Hoque Chowdhury Moly, Sajal Mahmud were present at the occasion.

In this competition, China’s Grand Master Li Di became undefeated champion by getting 8 points in 9 games and won the title. India’s Grandmaster Abhimanyu Puranik has become the runner-up with seven and a half points.

Five players scored six and a half points each, in tie-breaking system among them GM Karthik Venkataraman of India became third, GM Amin M Tabatabaei of Iran became fourth, GM Vadislav Kovalev of Belarus became fifth, GM Shyam Sundar of India became 6th and GM Maksoodloo Parham of Iran became 7th IM Ali Muhammad Lutfi of Indonesia became 8th, IM Murzin Volodar of Russia became 9th, Xu Yinglun of China became 10th, IM Garcia Jan Emmanuel of Philippine finished 11th in the tiebreaking with six points.

Among the Bangladeshi players, GM Reefat Bin Sattar came first with 6 points in 9 games, GM Enamul Hossain Razib became second IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman became third and GM Ziaur Rahman became 4th with five and half points .CM Tahsin Tajwar Zia was fifth and Shawkat Hossain Pallab became sixth with five points each. Sakline Mostafa Sajid won the special boys award and WIM Noshin Anjum won the special girls award.

Champion GM Li Di received two thousand US dollars, runner-up GM Abhimanyu Puranik received fifteen hundred us dollars, third GM Karthik Venkataraman received one thousand US dollars, fourth GM Amin Tabatabaei received six hundred US dollars, fifth GM Vladislav Kovalev received Five hundred US dollars, Sixth GM Shyam Sundar received four hundred US dollars, Seventh GM Maksoodloo Parham received four hundred US dollars, Eighth to tenth IM Ali Muhammad Lutfi, IM Murzin Volodar and GM Xu Yinglun received three hundred US dollars each, while IM Garcia Jane Emanuel Philippines, received a prize of two hundred US dollars as eleven prize .

GM Reefat Bin Sattar received 800 US dollars, GM Enamul Hossain Razib received 600 US dollars, 3rd IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman received 400 US dollars, 4th GM Ziaur Rahman received 300 US dollars, 5th CM Tahsin Tajwar Zia and 6th Shawkat Hossain Pallab each received two hundred US dollars, and as a special prize Sakline Mostafa Sajid and WFM Noshin Anjum received ten thousand taka each.

A total of 80 players, including 21 Grand Masters and 13 International Masters from 15 countries, took part in the three-day 9-round Swiss-League event. The winners of the competition were awarded a total of ten thousand US dollars in cash.

Sri Lanka Qualifies to FIDE Online Olympiad Division II with Malaysia and Chinese Taipei

The Sri Lanka Chess Team qualified to the Division II of the FIDE online Chess Olympiad 2021 after a successful performance at the Division III event held on the 27th, 28th and 29th of August 2021 at the Tornelo Platform. Sri Lanka played strongly and beat New Zealand 5 – 1, Japan 4 -2, IPCA (International Para Chess Association) 4-2, Thailand 5 ½ – ½, Fiji 6 – 0 and Nepal 4-2, drew with South Korea 3 – 3 and marginally lost to Malaysia 2 ½ – 3 ½ and  Chinese Taipei 2 ½ – 3 ½.

The Online Chess Olympiad 2021, conducted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is hosted by the Chinese Chess Federation from 20th August to 15th September 2021 at the Tornelo Platform. A total of 155 countries are participating in the event which is divided into 5 divisions. The teams are divided to divisions by their initial ranking and Sri Lanka with the initial ranking of 95th was placed in the Division 3.

The base division, the Division 4 was held on the 3rd weekend of August with a participation of 50 teams in 5 round robin events with 11 rounds after distribution of the last sixty ranked teams according to the geographical consideration. So, the top three of each qualifying event advances to the division III. The Division III consisted of 35 teams ranked above the Base division teams and the 15 teams selected from the base division. Sri Lanka was in the Pool A of the Division III and managed to select for the Division II being 3rd in the Pool A of Division III. Malaysia was the winner of our group and Chinese Taipei won the 2nd place.

The Sri Lanka team consisted of Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage(Ananda College), Minul Sanjula Doluweera (University of Colombo), Dinushki Premanath, Sachni Dinushima Ranasinghe (Nf3 Chess Club), Susal De Silva (Nalanda College), KM Sanudula Dahamdi (Musaeus College), Isuru Alahakoon (Sri Lanka Navy), Rasika Samaranayake (Pera Knights Chess Club), Niklesha Tharushi (Visakha Vidyalaya), Sandeepani M Tharushi (Devi Balika Vidyalaya) and Ashvini Pavalachandran (Wycherley International School). Each team fielding 6 players in a match as two men, two women, 1 junior and 1 girl. Each game has 1 point and if a team wins more than three then they are declared as the match winner. There were nine matches of this nature and Sri Lanka won 6 matches, drew 1 and lost 2.

GM Di Li of China Wins Shahid Captain Sheikh Kamal Invitational

GM Di Li of China won the Shahid Captain Sheikh Kamal Invitational International Online Chess Tournament  organized by the Bangladesh Chess Federation 27-29 August 2021 on Tornelo. Di won the top cash prize of $2,000 from a total prize fund of $10,000 sponsored by SAIF Powertec.

Sri Lanka’s Oshini Gunawardena in Girls U-10 Finals of FIDE Youth Chess World Cup

Nine year old Oshini Devindya Gunawardena, a student of Ferguson High School, Ratnapura in Sri Lanka, reached the finals of the FIDE Online Youth Chess World cup Finals after a nail biting finish at her tie breaking Armageddon game.

Oshini played very strongly in her first game of the Semi Finals with Russian Diana and won the game convincingly by sacrificing her Queen to get Checkmate. Starting the game with two Knights defense she sacrificed a pawn at the opening for center play but white managed to settle the position with an extra pawn after exchanging three minor pieces. But, strong Oshini found the mate with a Rook and a Bishop by sacrificing the Queen in time trouble situation with her Russian opponent.

In the second game which was played in the Ruy lopez opening she missed a move in the opening which resulted in her losing a minor piece. But, with her active play she managed to get the Bishop back. Still she had fewer  pawns and lost the endgame.

Having Black pieces at the tie break game, she outplayed her opponent totally to earn the berth for the World Championship Final Match tomorrow.

2 GMs Share Lead After 6 Rounds of Shahid Captain Sheikh Kamal Invitational

FIDE World Cadets Online Championship – Sri Lanka’s Oshini Advances to Semi Finals

Sri Lanka’s Oshini Devindya Gunawardena of Pushpadana College advanced to the semi finals of the under 10 years girls category in the FIDE World Cadets convincingly by scoring 2 points out of two games. She had to play 2 games with the same player, Russian Ksenia Asachenko with a rating of 1317. She won both games in style to enter the semifinals directly. Oshini will meet another Russian, Diana Preobrazhenskaya in the Semifinals tomorrow.

Sri Lanka National Chess Champion Ranindu lost a hard fought match with Nikoloas Spyropoulos, strong FIDE Master with a rating of 2425 from Greece. Ranindu lost the first game, but came back strongly in the 2nd game to tie the score. But, unfortunately, having white pieces in the Armageddon game he lost and ended his story in the event.

Armageddon game is a game played giving 5 minutes to White and 4 minutes to Black. But, White has to win the game. If the game is drawn, it is considered as a win for Black.

The FIDE Online Youth Chess World cup is conducted by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and organized by the Georgian Chess Federation this year. Nearly 2000 players from 105 countries participated in 10 categories of under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years Open and Girls events. The 1st round consists of 9 round Swiss System events and the top 16 in each category are playing a knocked out event for the supremacy. All games are played in Tornelo Platform with the time control of 10 minutes+ 3 seconds a side in the 1st round and 15 minutes + 5 seconds in the Final stage.

Filipinas Regidor, Claros bow out of FIDE World Cadets Chess

MANILA, Philippines—Kaye Lalaine Regidor lost to American Woman Candidate Master Alice Lee,0.5-1.5, in their Girls Under-12 quarterfinals tussle on Saturday, August 28, 2021, to crash out of the FIDE World Cadets and Youth Rapid Chess Championships virtually held at Tornelo Platform.


The Santa Rosa City, Laguna resident Regidor, whose stint here is being supported by Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, coach Tony Yu and Mayor Arlene Arcilla,  dropped the first game of their two-game regulation play in 45 moves of a Slav defense but fought hard in the second enjoyed positional edge in the Bishop and Pawn end game force draw by repetition of position in 60 moves of an English Opening.


In the Girls 14 and under, April Joy Claros lost to American International Master Ellen Wang, 0-2, ending the Philippine campaign in the online event organized by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

The Angeles City, Pampanga bet Claros, playing under the guidance of national coach GM Jayson Gonzales and Mr. Jimmy Reyes was beaten by Wang in the first game in 22 moves of an King’s Indian defense and in 44 moves of an Slav defense in the second.

GMs Vladislav Kovalev of Belarus, Sundar Shyam of India, Li Di of China and Abhimanyu Puranik of India share the lead with perfect 3 point slates after 3 rounds of the Shahid Captain Sheikh Kamal Invitational International online Chess Tournament which started 27 August 2021 on Tornelo.

Shahid Captain Sheikh Kamal was the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and brother of Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, one of the organizers of the Great Liberation War, promoter of modern sports in Bangladesh and cultural figure in Bangladesh. His name is Sheikh Kamal and he was Captain of the Army. He was martyred on 15 August 1975. Shahid means Martyr. The event is being held on the occasion of his 72nd birthday in his name.

Dr. Benazir Ahmed BPM (Bar), president of Bangladesh Chess Federation, welcomed participants, Bangladesh players were in the hotel playing over the internet under the watchful eyes of Arbiters similar to hybrid chess. The tournament is a 9-round Swiss over the weekend of 27-29 August 2021.

2 Philippine Girls, 2 Sri Lanka Boys Advance to FIDE World Cadets and Youth QF

MANILA, Philippines—Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Santa Rosa City, Laguna and April Joy Claros of Angeles City, Pampanga toppled their respective rivals early Friday, August 27, to barge into the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Cadets and Youth Rapid Chess Championships virtually held at Tornelo Platform.


Ranked 9th among 16 qualifiers, Regidor (Elo 1492),  playing under the gudiance of Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez and coach Tony Yu and supported by Mayor Arlene Arcillas, checkmated 8th seed Mariia Dolinskaya (Elo 1536) of Russia in the first game after 70 moves of an English Opening. Regidor, scored another checkmate win in the second game after 56 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Declined to advance into the next round in the Girls 12 and under.


Ranked 13th, Claros (Elo 1544) stunned fourth seed Machteld Van Foreest (Elo 2161) of the Nertherlands after 53 moves of an English Opening  in the Armageddon play. Claros, playing under the watch of Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales and Mr. Jimmy Reyes yielded the first game to Van Foreest after 30 moves of English Opening. She rebounded by winning the second after 50 moves of Caro-Kann defense, advance variation to force the tiebreaker in the Girls 14 and under.

14th seed Jersey Marticio (Elo 1544) of Cabuyao City, Laguna lost to third seed Woman FIDE Master Yana Zhapova (Elo 2196) of Russia after 53 moves of a Four Knights game in the Armageddon play and bowed out in the Girls 14 and under in the World Chess Federation (FIDE)-organized online tournament.

Meanwhile, Megan Althea Obrero Paragua, representing the United States of America and niece of Grandmaster Mark Callano Paragua fought hard against Emilie Alfano of France ended their 2 games into a fighting draw. In the tie breaker, Paragua, however checkmated Alfano after 72 moves of a Kings Pawn Game in the Armageddon play in the Girls 10 and under.

Alfano is the number 1 player of France and finished 3rd in the European girls under 10 chess championship.
Other Filipino casualties are Chester Neil Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal (Open 16 and under), Lexie Grace Hernandez of Angeles City, Pampanga (Girls 16 and under), Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian of Apayao (Girls 16 and under) and Wayne Ruiz of Santa Rosa City, Laguna (Open 14 and under).

Reyes lost both games to International Master Volodar Murzin of Russia, Hernandez drew her first game to Woman Candidate Master Ruiyang Yan of the United States but lost in the second game, Sebastian yielded to Woman Fide Master Amina Kairbekova of Kazakhstan in the Armageddon play while Ruiz dropped his 2 games to Bharath Subramaniyam H of India

Sri Lanka Players Qualify to Quarterfinals

Oshini Devinya Gunawardena of Ferguson High School Ratnapura made an outright win of 1 1/2 – 1/2 in the Round of 16 and got through to the Quarterfinals to be held tomorrow. Oshini, Sri Lanka’s youngest hope had a draw in the 1st round and made a win in the second game with confidence with Anastasia Chichinadze of Georgia.
The National Chess Champion, Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage of Ananda College made a nail biting finish in the Armageddon game after tying 1 each with strong Lance Henerson De La Fuenle of Spain, a Grand Master with a rating of 2491. Ranindu beat the grandmaster in the first round and lost a Darwish 2nd game in his two standard games. When Ranindu was offered to get a colour for his Armageddon game he choose white and Arbiter ask him two more times whether he needs white knowing that most of the players are choosing Black since Black needs a draw only. But, Ranindu played with confidence and scored the historical win.
Unfortunately, Susal De Silva lost his both games to strong International master with a rating of 2466, Christopher WooJin Yoo of USA.
Oshini will meet Ksenia Asachekno of Russia while Ranindu will face Nikolaos Spyropoulos of Greece, a FIDE master with 2425 ratings.
