Reymond Jay Ompod Wins 2nd edition of the Armageddon 8


Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (IIEE) Quezon import Reymond Jay Ompod (center) won the 2nd edition of the Armageddon 8 on December 15, 2024 at Latte Lounge Sta. Rosa. Laguna, Philippines. with former Philippine Executive Chess Association President Dr. Fred Paez (second from right) as runner up.
Both qualify for the 2nd Armageddon Battle of Champions to be held at Koten Pasay City on March 8, 2025.


The 1st edition qualifier was National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. and National Master Jeremy Marticio.
The coming edition will be held in Bicol on January 24, 2025.
The IIEE Southern Luzon Region representative for the Inter-Luzon Qualifier on September 12, 2025 will be led by Edmund Daluddung together with Alex Guingab, Novo Tuazon and Jpol Crispo (alternate).
In VIChess (3-player), the Laguna team tandem of Novo Tuazon and Jerome Prudencio bested teams from Batangas and Quezon.

172nd Internet-based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar (Asian Chess Federation)

The 172nd Internet Based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar (Asian Chess Federation) was held under the auspices of FIDE from 22nd to 24th November 2024. It was organized by the Asian Chess Federation supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.
The Lecturer was IA/IO Abundo, Casto (UAE), FIDE Lecturer, and the Assistant Lecturer was IA Pahlevanzadeh, Mehrdad (IRI), FIDE Lecturer.
The Language of the Seminar was English.
Twenty (20) arbiters from nine (9) national federations (AUS, BAN, EGY, IND, KEN, MGL, NEP, RSA, and SVK) participated in the Seminar, and all of them participated in the examination test, held after the end of the lectures.
The following succeeded in the test and they will be awarded a norm for the title of the FIDE Arbiter, after the approval of the next FIDE Council:

12 Year Old Boy Wins Asian Amateur Rapid Chess Championship

Twelve year old Egor Vlad Lovakov, playing under the neutral FIDE flag, won the gold medal at the Asian Amateur Rapid Chess Championship alone with 6.5 points out of 7 rounds. Local bet Al Romaithi Ahmad of the United Arab Emirates grabbed the silver medal while Bin Yazeed Muhahid of Maldives won the bronze medal in the event held 15th December 2024 at the Danat Al Ain Resort in the UAE.

In the women’s division, Shakhnoza Sabirova of Uzbekistan finished alone with 6 points to win the gold medal followed by WFM Rashed Ahlam of the UAE with 5 points and better tie break for the silver medal and WFM Nadezhda Antonova of Tajikistan also with 5.5 points for the bronze medal.

Kamatyas Chess Club Grants 1 Million Pesos to New Filipino GM Daniel Quizon

Daniel Maravilla Quizon (center) receives a grant of P 1 million from Kamatyas Chess Club after the International Chess Federation (FIDE) recently conferred his Grandmaster title. Grandmaster Daniel Maravilla Quizon emerged as the champion in the 14th Edition Year-End Kamatyas Rapid Chess Championship dubbed as Fusion of Flash and Iron last December 14, 2024 at the SM Southmall in Las Piñas City, Philippines.

GM Quizon pocketed the P30,000 top purse and the trophy for winning the tournament which saw over 190 players participate.
He had an undefeated record after tallying 8.0 points on account of 7 wins and 2 draws in the 9-round Swiss system competition.
GM Quizon defeated Elle Castronuevo (Round 1), Randy Turreda (Round 2),  Cris Aguilar (Round 3), National Master Angele Tenshi Biete (Round 4), National Master Giovanni Mejia (Round 5), FIDE Master  Christian Mark Daluz (Round 6) and International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia (Round 8).
He snapped his six-match winning streak when he had a draw against FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca in the seventh round. He drew with Chester Neil Reyes in the ninth and final round.
Reyes went on placing second overall with 7.5 points. Reyes’ second place finish earned him P10,000 plus trophy while the third place went to International Master Ronald Dableo with 7.5 points to earn P7,000 plus trophy  and the fourth place went to FIDE Master Roel Abelas to go home P5,000 plus medal.
” I would like to thank National Master David Almirol and International Master Roderick Nava  of Kamatyas Chess Club for organizing and sponsoring a free registration and free food rapid chess tournament. I would also like to thank the Kamatyas Chess Club for giving me a cash incentive of P 1 Million after the International Chess Federation (FIDE) conferred my Grandmaster title,” said GM Quizon, playing under the tutelage of his coach FM Abelgas.
The fifth to 10th placers were Biete (7.5 points), Arca (7.5 points), Daluz (7.0 points), FIDE Master  Austin Jacob (7.0 points), International Master Chito Garma (7.0 points) and FIDE Master Nelson Villanueva (7.0 points), respectively. All other finishers also took home a cash prize of P2,000 and a medal.
Meanwhile, Quizon received a cash incentive of P 1 million from Kamatyas Chess Club after the International Chess Federation (FIDE) recently conferred his Grandmaster title.

 

Philippine U-11 Girls Chess Team Show Way at 18th Asian Schools Championships

A talented team of young chess players showed the bright future of Philippine chess by shining in the Rapid Event in the 18th Asian Schools Chess Championships, held 1-11 December 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The team, consisting of WNM Millery Gen Subia from Cabanatuan City, Mary Janelle Tan from Cagayan De Oro City, and Elle Castronuevo from the City of Cavite, showcased their skills in the Under-11 Girls Rapid Event, finishing behind powerhouse teams from China and India, who took home the gold and silver medals, respectively.
The competition was fierce, with over 40 countries participating in this prestigious tournament. The Philippine team outperformed several other notable competitors, including teams from Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Japan, etc. According to WNM Millery Gen Subia, also the team captain and an elementary student at Wesleyan University Philippines, the victory was a significant achievement given the strength of their opponents. She expressed gratitude for the support they received:
“We are fortunate to win the bronze because it is not easy to win in this international tournament as many of our competitors are much stronger and winners in world chess cadet and world age group competitions”.
The team emphasized their appreciation for the contributions of parents, relatives, chess friends, teachers, classmates, supporters, sponsors, local government units (LGUs), schools, and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and Philippine Sports Commission. Gukesh D crowned FIDE World Champion

After almost a month of fierce competition, against an opponent who never gave in, 18-year-old Grandmaster from Chennai Gukesh D. raised the winner’s trophy this evening, in the magnificent ballrooms of the Equarius Hotel Sentosa.

It has been an extraordinary journey, one that has kept us all on the edge of our seats with each move, and each brilliant game. It has been a celebration of not just the players and their remarkable achievements, but also of the spirit of chess—its ability to inspire, connect, and transcend boundaries.

The awards ceremony took place next to the “fish tank”, the extra sensorial cube in which the 14-game match has been played. Over 1000 authorities, chess fans and media saluted the champion in the line of the greatest players in history.

The gala evening and closing ceremony began with a warm welcome to everyone by the two outstanding Masters of Ceremonies, Maurice Ashley and Charlize Van Zyl. Following the rendition of the Singaporean and FIDE anthems, a short video was projected, revisiting the incredible highlights that have made this championship unforgettable.

Singapore provided the perfect backdrop for this championship, combining the city’s stunning beauty with the warmth hospitality of its people.  Mr. Murali Pillai, Minister of State for the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Transport took to the stage and thanked FIDE and the local organizers for putting the event together. He also congratulated the two finalists, Ding Liren and Gukesh D. for their sportsmanship, setting such a fine example for chess enthusiasts all over the world.

Immediately afterwards, the CEO of the Singapore Chess Federation, Kevin Goh Wei Ming, joined the moderators on stage. Months and months of meticulous planning and hard work resulted in an impeccably organized event. Goh congratulated the players for their remarkable spirit and highlighted that the match had captivated millions of spectators all over the world.

The ceremony entered its final stage as Arkady Dvorkovich, President of the International Chess Federation, was invited to take the floor. He delivered heartfelt appreciation for everyone that had participated in the event during the last few weeks. He also highlighted the fighting spirit that the players brought to the table, with good moves but also mistakes.

Before prizegiving, Dvorkovich awarded commemorative appreciation plaques to both the minister Murali Pillai and to Professor Hsu Li Yang, the President of the Singapore Chess Federation.

Gratitude was extended to those who made this championship possible, including those working inside the cube every day – Chief Arbiter Hamid Bin Abd Majid, Deputy Arbiter Anastasia Sorokina, and Fair Play officer Aleksandar Colovic.

A special round of applause was awarded to FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky, who wasn’t able to join us tonight, but whose leadership and passion were pivotal in the championship’s success.

Kevin Goh was once again called to the stage and awarded the runner-up medal to the outgoing champion, Ding Liren – a player whose journey to this stage has exemplified his perseverance and mastery.

Accompanied at all times by his family and friends, he received the most important recognition: a round of thunderous applause for his effort in the competition.

And last but not least, the moment that everyone had been waiting for — the crowning of the 2024 FIDE World Chess Champion. Gukesh D, a player who has dazzled us with brilliance, poise, and creativity across the board.

The gold medal was presented by the Singapore Chess Federation CEO Kevin Goh Wei Ming, the iconic World Champion laurel was presented by Minister Mr. Murali Pillai and finally, the champion’s trophy was presented by FIDE President Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich.

Before the final photo opportunity shoot, Gukesh gave an emotional 10-minute speech, in which he thanked his family and friends, his team of coaches and his sponsors. He said that the journey had been nothing less than a dream, that there had been a lot of ups and downs, many beautiful moments but also setbacks, but that he wouldn’t change a single thing of his career.

World Champion Ding Liren, representing China, and challenger Gukesh D, from India, faced each other in a fourteen-game classical chess match. The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the match, picking up the better part of the $2.5 million total prize fund.
