Philippine U-11 Girls Chess Team Show Way at 18th Asian Schools Championships

A talented team of young chess players showed the bright future of Philippine chess by shining in the Rapid Event in the 18th Asian Schools Chess Championships, held 1-11 December 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The team, consisting of WNM Millery Gen Subia from Cabanatuan City, Mary Janelle Tan from Cagayan De Oro City, and Elle Castronuevo from the City of Cavite, showcased their skills in the Under-11 Girls Rapid Event, finishing behind powerhouse teams from China and India, who took home the gold and silver medals, respectively.
The competition was fierce, with over 40 countries participating in this prestigious tournament. The Philippine team outperformed several other notable competitors, including teams from Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Japan, etc. According to WNM Millery Gen Subia, also the team captain and an elementary student at Wesleyan University Philippines, the victory was a significant achievement given the strength of their opponents. She expressed gratitude for the support they received:
“We are fortunate to win the bronze because it is not easy to win in this international tournament as many of our competitors are much stronger and winners in world chess cadet and world age group competitions”.
The team emphasized their appreciation for the contributions of parents, relatives, chess friends, teachers, classmates, supporters, sponsors, local government units (LGUs), schools, and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and Philippine Sports Commission. Gukesh D crowned FIDE World Champion

After almost a month of fierce competition, against an opponent who never gave in, 18-year-old Grandmaster from Chennai Gukesh D. raised the winner’s trophy this evening, in the magnificent ballrooms of the Equarius Hotel Sentosa.

It has been an extraordinary journey, one that has kept us all on the edge of our seats with each move, and each brilliant game. It has been a celebration of not just the players and their remarkable achievements, but also of the spirit of chess—its ability to inspire, connect, and transcend boundaries.

The awards ceremony took place next to the “fish tank”, the extra sensorial cube in which the 14-game match has been played. Over 1000 authorities, chess fans and media saluted the champion in the line of the greatest players in history.

The gala evening and closing ceremony began with a warm welcome to everyone by the two outstanding Masters of Ceremonies, Maurice Ashley and Charlize Van Zyl. Following the rendition of the Singaporean and FIDE anthems, a short video was projected, revisiting the incredible highlights that have made this championship unforgettable.

Singapore provided the perfect backdrop for this championship, combining the city’s stunning beauty with the warmth hospitality of its people.  Mr. Murali Pillai, Minister of State for the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Transport took to the stage and thanked FIDE and the local organizers for putting the event together. He also congratulated the two finalists, Ding Liren and Gukesh D. for their sportsmanship, setting such a fine example for chess enthusiasts all over the world.

Immediately afterwards, the CEO of the Singapore Chess Federation, Kevin Goh Wei Ming, joined the moderators on stage. Months and months of meticulous planning and hard work resulted in an impeccably organized event. Goh congratulated the players for their remarkable spirit and highlighted that the match had captivated millions of spectators all over the world.

The ceremony entered its final stage as Arkady Dvorkovich, President of the International Chess Federation, was invited to take the floor. He delivered heartfelt appreciation for everyone that had participated in the event during the last few weeks. He also highlighted the fighting spirit that the players brought to the table, with good moves but also mistakes.

Before prizegiving, Dvorkovich awarded commemorative appreciation plaques to both the minister Murali Pillai and to Professor Hsu Li Yang, the President of the Singapore Chess Federation.

Gratitude was extended to those who made this championship possible, including those working inside the cube every day – Chief Arbiter Hamid Bin Abd Majid, Deputy Arbiter Anastasia Sorokina, and Fair Play officer Aleksandar Colovic.

A special round of applause was awarded to FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky, who wasn’t able to join us tonight, but whose leadership and passion were pivotal in the championship’s success.

Kevin Goh was once again called to the stage and awarded the runner-up medal to the outgoing champion, Ding Liren – a player whose journey to this stage has exemplified his perseverance and mastery.

Accompanied at all times by his family and friends, he received the most important recognition: a round of thunderous applause for his effort in the competition.

And last but not least, the moment that everyone had been waiting for — the crowning of the 2024 FIDE World Chess Champion. Gukesh D, a player who has dazzled us with brilliance, poise, and creativity across the board.

The gold medal was presented by the Singapore Chess Federation CEO Kevin Goh Wei Ming, the iconic World Champion laurel was presented by Minister Mr. Murali Pillai and finally, the champion’s trophy was presented by FIDE President Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich.

Before the final photo opportunity shoot, Gukesh gave an emotional 10-minute speech, in which he thanked his family and friends, his team of coaches and his sponsors. He said that the journey had been nothing less than a dream, that there had been a lot of ups and downs, many beautiful moments but also setbacks, but that he wouldn’t change a single thing of his career.

World Champion Ding Liren, representing China, and challenger Gukesh D, from India, faced each other in a fourteen-game classical chess match. The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the match, picking up the better part of the $2.5 million total prize fund.

Press Conference for Asian Amateur Chess Championship

Abu Dhabi, Dec. 12 (WAM) — Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the Asian Amateur Chess Championship will kick off Sunday 15th December, with the participation of a record 33 countries.

The tournament will be held at Danat Al Ain Hotel from 14 to 23 December, and is organized by the Al Ain Chess and Mind Games Club, in cooperation with the UAE Chess Federation, and supervised by the Asian Chess Federation, and includes 8 tournaments, four for the standard chess, and two for each of the rapid and blitz chess.

These details were revealed during a press conference held 12 December at the Sheraton Abu Dhabi Hotel, in the presence of Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation and President of Al Ain Chess and Mind Games Club, His Excellency Arif Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Hisham Al Taher, Managing Director and CEO of the club and General Secretary of the Asian Chess Federation, and Mahdi Abdul Rahim, Executive Director of the UAE Chess Federation and Chief Arbiter of the Asian Amateur.

Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa bin Shakhbout Al Nahyan stressed that the tournament is a unique opportunity to enhance the position of chess as a tool to promote creative thinking and build bridges of communication between various Asian cultures in a competitive atmosphere full of passion and ambition.

He also praised the efforts made by the Ministry of Sports, Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, and all partners in the public and private sectors, which contribute to sports development.

Arif Al Awani said that the presence of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council reflects its keenness to support sports in general and individual games in particular, as chess is more than just a game, as it is a means to develop mental skills and promote positive values such as strategic thinking, patience and planning.

Mahdi Abdul Rahim pointed to the importance of the tournament in enhancing the competitiveness of UAE players through contact with various participants from Asian countries, praising the efforts of the Asian Chess Federation in spreading the game and organizing tournaments.

Hisham El Taher announced a record participation in the tournament from 33 countries representing Asia, the Australian subcontinent and the South Pacific, the highest number since the tournament began in 2010.

He revealed that prize money worth AED 100,000 has been allocated, in addition to daily draws and prizes for the public through the club’s digital platforms.

He explained that in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the club’s establishment, the Al Ain Super Grand Electronic Chess Championship will be organized, with prizes of up to USD 65,000.

Winners of Iran’s Youth Chess Championship in Rapid and Blitz Announced

The Iranian Youth Chess Championships for age categories Under 8 to Under 18 concluded with resounding success in Tehran, Iran. Attracting 405 of the nation’s most talented young chess players, the event took place at Iran Mall, the largest shopping mall in the world, which served as a fitting venue for this prestigious competition. China was overall winner (based on standard chess).

India was second runner-up in standard chess.

Arnel Mahawan Jr. Wins Greenfield Rapid Chess Tournament

Arnel Mahawan Jr. emerged as the champion in the Merry Chessmas! Jingle Belle Kiddies (14U) Rapid Chess Tournament December 8, 2024, at the Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District, Mandaluyong City, Philippines.
The 14-year-old Mahawan, who plays for the San Sebastian College – Recoletos Manila under the guidance of coach National Master Homer Cunanan in the  National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), pocketed the P5,000 purse and the trophy for ruling the tournament with over 70 participants.
He had a near-perfect campaign after tallying 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss system competition.
The San Rafael, Bulacan native Mahawan defeated Willard Elijah Baylon, ACM Adrian Alarcon, Marco Piolo Sanido, Karl Ashton Fratkin, AFM Caleb Loukas Picache-David, AFM Lorenzo Portugal in the first and sixth rounds, respectively. He snapped his six-match winning streak when he had a draw with John Randall Peralta in the seventh and final round.

Sumer Justine Oncita, a Grade 8 student of University of Santo Tomas (UST) under the wings of coaches GM candidate Ronald Dableo and GM Darwin Laylo went on placing second overall with 6.5 points.

The pride of Pasig City, Oncita ended up in second place losing to Mahawan in the bucholz tie break points.
The 10-year-old Peralta, a Grade 4 student of St. John’s Wort Montessori under the tutelage of coaches Froilan Bolico and Jojo Aquino Jr., settled for third place with six points, the same output of fourth placer Josh Borsigue.


Meanwhile, International Baptist College will host a tatluhan blitz chess team tournament on December 15, 2024 at the same venue.
