Three Share Lead in Asian Juniors, Tejaswini Beats Shukman in Asian Girls

IM Munkhdalai Amilal of Mongolia (above left) and IM Michael Concio, Jr. of the Philippines beat their respective sixth round opponents yesterday, 16th October, to share the lead with GM Aleksey Grebnev at 5 points each after six rounds of the Asian Juniors Chess Championship at the Knights Templar hotel in Tagaytay City, Philippines.

Concio unleashed a sacrificial attack against FM Arjun Adireddy of India. In a Ruy Lopez game, the Filipino created a protected passed pawn on the 19th move, gave the exchange and then sacrificed a Knight and Bishop to force resignation on the 32nd move.

Amilal essayed the Sicilian Defense against Yash Bharadia of India and won a Knight on the 27th move. With one piece disadvantage, Bharadia resigned on the 40th move.

GM Aleksey Grebnev of Russia, playing under the FIDE flag, drew with compatriot IM Artem Uskov in 51 moves of a minor piece endgame to tally 5 points.

In the Asian Girls division, top seed WIM G. Tejaswini of India beat solo leader WIM Anna Shukman to halt the winning streak of the Russian, playing under FIDE flag, and open the race for the crown.

Tejaswini crushed the Nimzo Indian defense of Shukman in only 22 moves. The Indian gave her Rook in order to weave a mating net with her Queen and Knight.

Tejaswini is in second slot with 4.5 points out of six rounds together with compatriot Halder Sneha, only a half point behind Shukman who is alone in the lead. Sneha used the Bird’s Opening to beat Malaysian Ainul Mardhiah Mohd Afif, delivering checkmate on the 53rd move.

Concio Halts Grebnev Winning Streak in Asian Juniors, Shukman Leads Asian Girls.

Filipino IM Michael Concio, Jr (left) held solo leader Aleksey Grebnev to a draw in today’s fifth round to halt the winning streak of the Russian GM playing under FIDE flag in the Asian Juniors Chess Championship at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City, Philippines.

Grebnev maintains a slim half point lead with 4.5 points at the halfway mark of the 9-round tournament. Concio and two others follow with 4 points each, namely IM Munkhdalai Amilal of Mongolia and IM Artem Uskov of Russia playing under FIDE flag.

Five players are within striking distance at 3.5 points each, namely IM Krishna Rohith, FM Arjun Adireddy and CM Yash Bharadia of India, FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Philippines and FM Imangali Akhilbay of Kazakhstan.

50th India Women’s Championship: P. V. Nandhidhaa wins maiden title

WGM P. V. Nandhidhaa of Tamil Nadu emerged as the winner of the 50th India National Women’s Chess Championship. The competition, an 11-round Swiss tournament, took place in Chettinadu Public School from October 3-13, 2024. The event brought together 150 best female India’s players from all across the country (except for the members of the golden Olympiad team) and saw a thrilling finale.

The tournament was a tight race, with the top-rated players taking turns on the top of the standings. Going into the final 11th round, Nandhidhaa and J Saranya were jointly leading the field with 8/10, closely followed by a big group of players on 7.5/10.

P. V. Nandhidhaa outplayed Priyanka Nutakki of Andhra Pradesh on the top board and clinched her maiden national title with an impressive score of 9 points as her main rival Saranya, J suffered a defeat at the hands of IM Rout Padmini.

Three players tied for second place netting 8.5/10 with K Priyanka and Padmini Rout earning silver and bronze respectively, thanks to superior Buchholz.

The awarding ceremony was attended by IAS Ayush Venkat Vats, Sub-Collector of Devakottai, who praised India’s recent double medal-winning performance at the Chess Olympiad and expressed hope for the continued development of chess talents through such tournaments. Stephen Balasamy, General Secretary of TNSCA, S. P. Kumaresan, Chairman of Chettinadu Public School, and K. Arunkumar, Vice Chairman, were also present, with Kumaresan emphasizing that this tournament would remain a memorable event for the participants

In the boys’ division, top seed GM Aleksey Grebnev of Russia, playing under the FIDE flag, used the Giuoco Piano game to beat erstwhile co-leader Krishna Rohith of India in 57 moves to maintain solo lead with 4 points from as many rounds.

IM Michael Concio of the Philippines (above left) essayed the King’s Indian Attack to beat compatriot FM Christian Gian Karlo Arca (right) who sacrificed a Knight on the 21st move but the attack fizzled out and Arca resigned on the 39th move.

Concio is alone in second slot with 3.5 points and sets up the showdown with Grebnev in the 5th round at 9am tomorrow.

In the girls’ division, top seed WIM G. Tejaswani essayed the Queen’s Gambit Declined to weave a mating net in 33 moves against Indonesian WIM Diajeng Theresa Singgih. The stronger half expectedly won the first round but WIM Zeinep Sultanbek of Kazakhstan was held to a draw by Filipina Jemaicah Yap Mendoza in 42 moves of a Rook and pawn endgame.

Russians Top Asian Juniors and Girls Rapid Chess Championships

Defending champion GM Aleksey Grebnev and top seed WIM Anna Shukhman, both of Russia playing under the FIDE flag, topped the Asian Juniors and Girls Rapid Chess Championships, respectively, held 12th October 2024 at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City, Philippines.

Grebnev (right) got off to a slow start as he was held to a draw by Indian IM Krishna Rohith in the second round. After three straight wins, Grebnev lost to Vietnamese IM Dau Khuong Duy in the sixth round. Grebnev rebounded with two wins and drew the last round with compatriot IM Artem Uskov to finish alone with 7 points for the gold medal.

Two Indians, IM Aswath and FM Arjun Adireddy finished second and third, respectively, with 6.5 points each for the silver and bronze medals, respectively, beating IM Dau by tie break.

Top seed WIM Anna Shukhman (right) also won the Asian Girls Rapid Chess Championship alone with 8 points. World Cadets Champion Oshini Gunawardhana of Sri Lanka took the lead after beating Shukhman in the fourth round and held on to the lead until the seventh round when she lost to Indian WIM G. Tejaswani.

Shukhman won all her remaining games to grab the gold while Oshini lost to WIM Zeinep Sultanbek of Kazakhstan in the last round to tally 7 points for the silver. WFM Guptan Shubhi of India won the bronze with 6 points and the better tie break over Sultanbek.

 

IM Jan Emmanuel Wins HK-DB Monthly International Open

Filipino IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia (above left) won the HK-DB Monthly International Open FIDE rated chess tournament last October 4-7, 2024 at Club Siena, Discovery Bay, Hongkong.

Garcia successfully finished the 7-round Swiss System tournament to claim the championships trophy and PHP70,000 in cash.  A total of 31 chess players competed from China, India, Russia, Singapore, the Philippines and host Hong Kong.

Standard time control of 90 minutes and 30 seconds increment was used.

Jan Emmanuel defeated Haoyang Wu of Hongkong in the first round and followed up with wins over Kyle Chen of Hongkong, Yulun Cai of China, Xuanyu Liu of China, Fuhan Zhang of China, Yuxu Zhou of China and Siddhant Tamhankar of India.

Philippines’ GM elect Daniel Quizon joining Asian Juniors Rapid Chess Championship

The Philippines’ newest Grandmaster elect, Daniel Quizon, will participate in the Asian Juniors Rapid Chess Championship tomorrow 12 October 2024 at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City, Philippines.

Quizon paid a courtesy call on Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Richard E. Bachmann on 10th October. In photo are, from left, Chairman Bachmann, Daniel Quizon, IM Michael Concio Jr., International Arbiter Ricky Navalta, coach FM Roel Abelgas and Commissioner Walter Francis K. Torres.

Filipino Daniel Maravilla Quizon tied for first to sixth place in the Abu Dhabi Masters, one of the strongest tournaments of the year. He ended up in 6th place after the tie breaks. The Dasmariñas athlete finished with seven wins and two losses after nine rounds in one of the toughest tournaments Quizon joined.
Quizon was in for a strong finish in the Abu Dhabi Masters along with five Grandmasters. namely eventual champion GM Yakubboev Nodirbek of Uzbekistan, 2nd place GM David Paravyan of Russia, 3rd place GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov of Uzbekistan, 4th place GM Leon Luke Mendonca of India and 5th place GM M. Amin Tabatabaei of Iran.
