Chess Undertaking in China in New Era

In 1956, chess was officially listed as a competition event by the General Administration of Sport of China, marking the first milestone in the development of chess in China. In 1962, the Chinese Chess Association was established and officially joined the International Chess Federation as a member federation in 1975. In 2002, the General Administration of Sport of China officially approved the founding of the Chinese national chess team, where becomes the cradle for China to cultivate the top talents, and a large number of world-class high-level chess players emerged from here. With the strong support of the country and the unremitting efforts of several generations, chess undertaking in China has achieved fruitful results.

1. The achievements of chess competition have attracted worldwide attention
The Chinese women’s team has won five-time Olympiad and four-time World Team Championship, while the Chinese men’s team has won twice Olympiad and three-time World Team Championship. The Chinese men’s team won the Olympiad for the first time in 2014, which was the first time in 87 years that team from Asian Continent had won the trophy of this event, achieving a historic breakthrough. The Chinese men’s and women’s teams both won Olympiad in 2018, taking the world by storm.
Six Chinese female chess players, including Xie Jun, Zhu Chen, Xu Yuhua, Hou Yifan, Tan Zhongyi, and Ju Wenjun, have won the title of world champion amounting to 15 times, establishing the strongest position of Chinese female chess players in the world. In 2023, Chinese chess player Ding Liren became the 17th world chess champion and the first Chinese male chess player to win the Men’s World Champion title.

2. The promotion of chess in China has achieved significant results
The Board and Card Games Administrative Center of the General Administration of Sport and the Chinese Chess Association attach great importance to the promotion and
popularization of chess. In recent years, more and more people have been attracted to participate in international chess sports by organizing activities such as volunteer services for national fitness, the western promotion program of chess, and chess in schools and communities.

(1) The western promotion program is being solidly advanced. This program was launched since 2019, mainly targeting western provinces in China.

(2) Chess in school and community activities is with diversity and variety. The “Run, Youth” event has become a exemplary case of promoting the integrati on of sports and education. The International Chess Culture Festival held in Liaocheng, Shandong and other places has played a positive role in driving local sports, cultural and tourism consumption, and promoting the development of local economic and social undertakings.

(3) Volunteer services for national fitness are flourishing. Many cities organize and carry out chess volunteer service activities based on actual conditions, selecting outstanding chess players and coaches to go deep into the grassroots front line to teach chess knowledge and skills.

3. Various chess competitions
(1) Chinese Chess Association Masters Tournament. This is the brand competition with the largest number of participants and is the most popular event among young people in China. In 2024, China will hold a total of 20 legs, with approximately 10,000 young chess players participating.

(2) “The Belt and Road” series of events. This is a chess tournament for countries joining and supporting the initiative of the “the Belt and Road”. There are “the Belt and Road” Xi’an Women’s Chess Summit, “the Belt and Road” Qinhuangdao International Open, “the Belt and Road” Zhejiang Shaoxing Yuecheng Women’s International Open and other “the Belt and Road” events. This year, “the Belt and Road” open tournament will also be held in Aksu, Xinjiang.

(3) The “SCO Countries” competition event. This is an international chess tournament aimed at SCO countries, which has been successfully held for five sessions. In April 2024, the Embassy of Kazakhstan in China took the lead in organizing an international chess tournament for diplomats from the embassies of Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries in China.

(4) A League. This is the highest level and most influential chess tournament in China. Each competition has 12 representative teams from all over the country participating.

(5) The “New Talent” series of events. The Nanjing New Talent Competition, Shanghai New Talent King Competition and other “New Talent” competitions have been held
consecutively for multiple sessions. Th events have become an important stage for discovering and cultivating excellent reserve talents.

(6) Danzhou Super Chess Grandmaster Tournament. This is an international high-level event hosted by China, which has been held for 14 consecutive years and has become a well-known local sports brand event. The current world champion Ding Liren, former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov, and women’s world champion Hou Yifan and Ju Wenjun have participated in this event for several times. In the past years, chess enthusiasts in Danzhou have grown from a dozen to nearly 100,000.
It has been favored by domestic and foreign media, attracting a large number of media attention and extensive coverage, with 10 million visits on live broadcasting over the world. This event brings in not only youth chess fans but also enterprises. This event serves as a feast of chess culture, and also a channel to promote local culture and food. This competition has significantly increased the city’s visibility and reputation, effectively promoting the integrated development of tourism, culture, and sports in Danzhou.

4. The construction of the chess organization and team continues to strengthen
At present, the network system of national, provincial, and municipal-level chess organizations has covered most provinces in China. Based on the actual situation, chess clubs and academies have been established in various regions by fully leveraging the role of social forces, providing training places for chess enthusiasts and becoming a cradle for the development and growth of chess talents. The Chinese Chess Association has established training bases in Shenzhen and Hangzhou, which have played an important role in cultivating high-level chess talents.

Besides, Chinese people of all ethnic groups in a concerted effort to build China into a great modern socialist country in all respects and to advance the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation on all fronts. Sports play an important role in the building of a great modern country and the great cause of national rejuvenation. A leading sporting nation is an important part of a a great modern socialist country. As an important part of China’s sports undertaking, chess plays a unique role in building China into a leading sporting nation. The Chinese Chess Association will strengthen exchanges with foreign counterparts, learn from them, and work together with them to promote the steady and far-reaching development of chess in the world.

2nd Senator Manny Pacquiao Chess Team (Trios) Tournament

The 2nd Hon. Sen. Manny Pacquiao chess team (trios) tournament (2000 average rating) gets underway at 11 am on September 22, 2024 at Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas Avenue in Quezon City, Philippines.

The champion team will earn P25,000 plus a trophy and a medal. The second placer will get P12,000 plus a trophy, third placer will receive P8,000 plus a trophy, fourth placer will bring home P5,000 while the fifth placer will pocket P4,000.

Sixth to 7th placers will go home with P3,000 each while the eighth to 10th placers will bring home P2,000 each.

Makati Pirates Win Lifecore Rapid Chess Team Tournament

The Makati Pirates team won the Lifecore Enterprises Open rapid chess trio team tournament held September 8,2024 at the Gaisano Mall Calapan City, Philippines. Visit chess-results.com for round-by-round results and standings.
Virgen Gil Ruaya led the Makati Pirates chess team to the championship as the BNU squad also featured Vincent Mariano and Joshua Francisco.
Makati nabbed four wins and got one draw to top the 20-team tournament.
Makati defeated Chess Nut, 3-0, in the first round, Triple Ace, 2-1, in the second round, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, 2-1, in the third round, and Mindoro Chess Executioner, 2.5-0.5, in the fifth and final round. They drew with Carpet Bombers Drunken Master, 1.5-1.5, in the fourth round.
With the victory, Makati received the top prize of P35,000 plus 3 gold medals for their efforts in this 15-minutes plus 5-second increment time control.
Triple Ace placed second followed by Mindoro Chess Executioner in third.

Randhir Singh of India Elected Olympic Council of Asia President

New Delhi: Veteran sports administrator Randhir Singh was unanimously elected president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in its 44th General Assembly held here on Sunday.

Singh, who is the first Indian to become full-time president of the continental body, will hold the top job for four years. He was OCA’s secretary-general from 1991 to 2015 – the post has been abolished – and then was its life vice-president until 2021.

“I am very grateful to all the NOCs for supporting me and standing with me. There was a big controversy last year which tainted the ‘one family’ motto of OCA. But we are back to normal now and it is good now,” Singh, 77, said.

A trap shooter who represented India at five Olympics from 1968 to 1984, he won gold in the event at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games. He has served as OCA acting president since 2021, filling in after Kuwait’s Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was handed a 15-year ban from sports administration by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over ethics breach. He was Indian Olympic Association secretary-general (1987-2012) and IOC member (2001-14).

The posts of president, five vice-presidents (for the 5 zones) and five Executive Board members were all uncontested. The electronic voting required a simple majority of 50 per cent plus one from the 45 National Olympic Committees.

GM Duc Hoa Wins Masters, Bernardino Tops Amateurs in 3rd Laos International

GM Nguyen Duc Hoa of Vietnam won the Masters division while Marlon Bernardino of the Philippines topped the Amateurs division in the 3rd Laos International Chess Open organized by the Laos Chess Federation 1-6 September 2024 in Vientaine, Laos.

Bernardino played under the tutelage of 1996 RP Junior Champion Coach FM Robert Suelo Jr. and with the full support of Mers Lodronio Suelo and ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO D. Edgard Cabangon. A former top player of Rizal Technological University (RTU) Barangay Malamig, Mandaluyong City chess team in the mid 90’s, Bernardino dominated the FIDE Standard Tournament by securing 5 wins and 4 draws to raise his total 7 points in the 9 round competition.
NM Bernardino defeated Feng Wenzhe of China, Vilaphen Phaktong of Laos, Franchesca Largo of the Philippines and Bui Ngoc Phuong Nghi of Vietnam in the first and fourth rounds, respectively.
He snapped his four-match winning streak when he had a draw against Mark Gabriel Usman and Jemaica Yap Mendoza of the Philippines, Win Tun Htwe of Myanmar, Nguyen Le Minh Uyen of Vietnam, in order. He beat Arena FIDE Master Seo Juwon of South Korea in the last round to secure the win.
It shall be recalled that NM Bernardino won the 2005 Arlington, Virginia USA Open Rapid Chess Championship. Bernardino got his National Master title when he finished overall 7th during the 1998 SSS Asian Zonal Elimination round. The same year, Bernardino earned his United States chess master title in the National Chess Congress and was held at the Adams Mark Hotel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.

Asian Disabled Chess Championship (Men, Women, Juniors and Girls) in Kyrgyzstan

The Kyrgyz Chess Union, under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE, is pleased to invite all National Federations in FIDE Zones 3.1 to 3.8 to participate in the 2nd Asian Chess Championship for Players with Disabilities (Open/Women and Juniors/Girls) from 10 November 2024 (arrival) to 18 November 2024 (departure). The event is supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.

Men /Women and Juniors/Girls with disabilities representing the Chess Federations of Asia in FIDE Zones 3.1 to 3.8 are permitted to participate in the Championship. Juniors and Girls should be below the age of 20 years on or before 1st January 2024 and from a National Federation in Zones 3.1 to 3.8.

The tournament will be held in the following categories:

Visual Impairment: (men and women with disabilities with full or visually impaired (legally considered to be blind);

Physical Impairment: (men and women with disabilities with a lesion of the musculoskeletal system and others with physical disabilities);

Hearing Impairment: Category B (men and women with disabilities with full or weakened hearing loss (legally considered to be deaf).

“Belt and Road” China International Chess Open Set in Aksu, Xinjiang

The 2024 “the Belt and Road” China International Chess Open is scheduled October 15, 2024 (arrival) to October 23, 2024 (departure) in Aksu, Xinjiang, China. The tournament will be held in two groups for players with FIDE ID who are rated 2000 or above in Group A and 1999 and below for Group B.

The competition format will be using a 9-round Swiss format with time control of 90 minutes for the whole game with increment of 30 seconds per move.

The total prize money for this competition is 330,000 yuan (CNY, pre tax), and the ranking will be determined by tie-break if score is the same.

160th Internet-based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar

 The 160th Internet Based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar (IRI) was held from 22nd to 26th July 2024. It was organized by the Iranian Chess Federation, under the auspices of FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation.

The Lecturer was IA/IO Pahlevanzadeh, Mehrdad (IRI), FIDE Lecturer, and Local Assistant Lecturer was IA Hashemi, Amir Erfan (IRI).

The Language of the Seminar was English with translation into Persian.

Nineteen (19) arbiters from Iran participated in the Seminar, and all of them participated in the examination test, held after the end of the lectures.

FIDE World Championship Match 2024 Regulations announced

FIDE is pleased to announce the official regulations for the highly anticipated FIDE World Championship Match 2024, set to take place in Singapore from November 20 to December 14, 2024. This prestigious event will see the reigning World Champion, GM Ding Liren, defend his title against the challenger, GM Gukesh D, the winner of the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2024.

Key Highlights of the Regulations:

Match Format and Time Control:

The match will consist of 14 classical games. Each game will follow the time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment starting from move 41.

The player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the World Championship Match. If the score after fourteen games is equal, then tie-breaks will be played.

Tie-Breaks:

After consultations with both players, the format for tiebreaks has changed to introduce a gradual decrease in time controls.

Prizes:

The total prize fund for the match is $2.5 million, with specific distributions based on game outcomes.

The prize fund will be distributed as follows:

  • Each player will receive $200,000 for each game they win.
  • The remaining prize money will be split equally between the players.
  • If the winner is decided on a tie-break, the prize money will be divided as follows: the winner receives $1,300,000, and the runner-up receives $1,200,000.

Schedule:

The match schedule includes 14 game days, interspersed with rest days. A tie-break, if needed, will be held on December 13, followed by the Closing Ceremony on December 14.

About the FIDE World Championship Match

The FIDE World Championship Match is one of the most important and widely watched chess events globally. Held every two years, it features the defending World Champion and the Challenger, chosen through a qualification process culminating in the Candidates Tournament, which includes eight of the world’s top players.

The current World Champion is Ding Liren, who secured his title by defeating Ian Nepomniachtchi in a thrilling match that went to tiebreaks in Astana, Kazakhstan, in April 2023. The Challenger is the 18-year-old prodigy Gukesh D from India, who emerged victorious in the Candidates Tournament held in Toronto in April 2024, and is the youngest challenger for the title in chess history.
