Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore Top Eastern Asia Rapid Chess Championship

Vietnam youths topped the Eastern Asia Youth Rapid Chess Championship today 13th July 2024 in Penang, Malaysia, with three gold medals followed by host Malaysia with two golds and one silver and bronze, and Singapore with two golds and two bronze medals. A record 365 players are participating from 16 countries, namely Brunei Darusslam, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malsyaia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam.

The event is being held in 12 categories, under 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 for boys and girls. The standard event is scheduled 14-20 July 2024. The tournament is organized by the Malaysian Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE.

Tight Race After 6 Rds of Western Asia Youth Chess Championship in Sri Lanka

 

Tight races for the lead ensued after six rounds of the Western Asia Youth Chess Championship in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Visit chess-results.com for round by round results and standings. The tournament is organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE.

FM Erzhgab Zhakshylykov of Kyrgyzstan maintained solo lead in the boys under-18 with 5.5 points after six rounds. FN Manon, Reja Neer of Bangladesh is one point behind alone in second slot.

FM Akhilbay, Imangali of Kazakhstan leads alone with 5.5 points out of 6 rounds in the boys under-16 followed by compatriot Dumanuly, Sultanbeibarys and Indian Daksh, Goyal with 4.5 points each.

CM Sakline Mostafa, Sajid of Bangladesh is in solo lead in the boys under-14 group with 5 points followed by Sri Lankans Induwara, T H D Thisarindu and Janukshan, B with 4.5 points each.

Ayaan, Garg of India and Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna of Sri Lanka are tied for the lead in the boys under-12 with 5 points each followed by Biglarifard, Koorosh of Iran with 4.5 points.

Karunasena, A P Chenitha Sihas Dinsara of Sri Lanka and Ashok Samaksh of India are tied for the lead in the under-10 boys with 5 points each followed by three other players with 4.5 points each, namely Sogerwal Vairaj of India and Sri Lankans HM Chamuditha Sasen Bandara Herah and Thehas Rithmitha Kiringoda.

Kavish, Palaniappan K of India leads the boys under-8 alone with 5.5 points after six rounds followed by four players with 4.5 points each, namely Sri Lankans Nethmitha, Thanushan, Shakithiyen T and Kulathilaka, M A Sanuka Sageeth, and Uzbek Abdulakhatov, Nurislom.

Five players are tied for the lead in the girls under-18 with 4.5 points each, namely WFM Galina Mikheeva playing under the FIDE flag, Mallick Mrittika of India, WFM Guldona Karimova of Uzbekistan, Aidana Madi of Kazakhstan and WFM Ahmed Wadifa of Bangladesh. 

Ananya, Raman of India leads alone with 5 points in the girls under-16 followed by Zilola Aktamova of Uzbekistan and Zhaniya Naunaova of Kazakhstan, tied at 4.5 points each.

Berdibaeva, Edisa of Kyrgyzstan and Aadya, Gupta of India remain tied for the lead in the girls under-14 with 4.5 points each. Sri Lankans Mudalige, S M I Umandi and Rathnayake, R M Dulinma Hemalni and Indian Asudani, Ruhani Raj follow with 4 points each.

Palliyage, Sethumlee Devhara of Sri Lanka leads the girls under-12 alone with 5 points after 6 rounds. Compatriot Hansadi, R B Pumudi, WCM Warsia, Khusbu of Bangladesh and Alima Omirserik of Kazakhstan follow with 4.5 points each.

Gomes, J Vaneesha Oshini of Sri Lanka leads alone with 5.5 points followed by Sholpanbek, Zhansaya of Kazakhstan with 5 points. Three players are tied with 4.5 points each, namely Indians Divi, Bijesh and Pooja, Shree R and Sri Lankan Thanthulage, Hesanya.

Four players are tied for the lead with 5 points each after 6 rounds of the girls under-8, namely Warisa, Haider of Bangladesh, Aaranya, R of India and Sri Lankans Fernando, Warnakulasuriya Eleesha and Ranasinghe, O R Hasini Anuththara.

Halfway Mark of Western Asia Youth Chess Championship in Sri Lanka

Clear leaders have emerged in the various age groups at the halfway mark of the Western Asia Youth Chess Championship, 7-16 July 2024 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The tournament is organized by the Sri Lanka Chess Federation under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE.

FM Erzhan Zhakshylykov of Kyrgyzstan grabbed solo lead in the boys under-18 with a perfect 5 points, one and a half points ahead of second running Jani Kushal of India and FM Reja Neer Manon of Bangladesh.

In the under-16 boys, FM Imangali Akhilbay of Kazakhstan also had a perfect score of 5 points. Five players follow with 3.5 points each.

THD Tnisarindu Induwara of Sri Lanka grabbed solo lead in the Under-14 boys with 4.5 points. Compatriot B. Janukshan and CM Sajid Sakline Mostafa of Bangladesh follow close behind with 4 points each.

In the boys under-12, Garg Ayaan of India grabbed solo lead with 4.5 points followed by Koorosh Biglarifard of Iran and Vinuka Dihain Wijerathna of Sri Lanka with 4 points each.

In the under-8 boys division, Palaniappan K Kavish of India is alone in the lead with 4.5 points followed by four players with 4 points each.

In the girls division, WFM Guldona Karimova of Uzbekistan and Ahmed Wadifa of Bangladesh are tied for the lead in the girls under-18 with 4 points each. Six players follow with 3.5 points each.

Three girls are tied for the lead with 4 points each in the under-16, namely Raman Ananya of India, Zilola Aktamova of Uzbekistan and Zhaniya Nauanova of Kazakhstan.

Gupta Aadya of India is alone in the lead with 4 points in the under14 girls. Three others follow with 3.5 points each, namely B Yenuthi Sahanlee Perera and RM Dulinma Hemalni Rathnayake, both of Sri Lanka, and Edisa Berdibaeva of Kyrgyzstan.

Four players are tied for the lead with 4 points each in the girls under-12 division, namely Shah Hanya of India, R B Pumudi Hansadi and Sethumlee Devhara Palliyage, both of Sri Lanka, and Khushu Warsia of Bangladesh.

Zhansaya Sholpanhek of Kazakhstan grabbed solo lead with a perfect 5 point slate in the girls under-10 division followed by J Vaneesha Gomes Oshini with 4.5 points and H P Sanuli Swethma of Sri Lanka with 4 points.

IM Daniel Quizon Wins 2nd Gov. Henry Oaminal Chess Festival Open Tournament

Quizon held off International Master Michael Concio Jr. of Dasmariñas, Cavite to a draw in the ninth and final round of the tournament held in the celebration of the 76th Ozamiz City Charter Anniversary and feast of Nuestra Sra. dela Concepcion y del Triunfo de Migpangi. The tournament was organized by Asenso Misamis Occidental Federated Chess Association in coordination with the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental.

Quizon, a member of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy under Mayor Jenny Barzaga and Councillor Kiko Barzaga, had a total of 7.5 points (six wins and three draws). He bagged the PHP100,000 top purse.

“I am happy to have won the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament. I wish that my luck would remain the same in my next tournament,” said the 19-year-old Quizon, who needs to raise his standard rating 2460 to 2500 to complete his GM title status.

Concio, Grandmaster Darwin Laylo of Dasmariñas, Cavite and International Master Eric Labog Jr. of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya placed second, third and fourth with similar 7.5 points to receive P60,000, P40,000 and P20,000, respectively.

NM Joey Albert Florendo of Zamboanga City and Rodney Opada of Ozamis City scored 7.0 points each while FM David Elorta of Manila, Johnnel Balquin of Cagayan de Oro City, Nazario Ubanan of Cagayan de Oro City, Michel Jackson Ambuang of Dipolog City, FM Roel Abelgas of Dasmariñas, Cavite , Abdelmunim Hassan of Jolo, Sulu, AGM Julius Dan Augustine Ablin of Iligan City, Jeriel Manlimbana of Malaybalay, Bukidnon and Johnny Wellem Carzano of Tangub City have identical 6.5 points.

Meanwhile, Quarl Maverick Vera Cruz of Balingoan, Misamis Oriental and NM Keith Adriane Ilar of  El Salvador, Misamis Oriental topped the Elementary and High School division, respectively to take home P60,000 each.

Asia’s first Grandmaster and World Chess Hall of Famer Eugene Torre and Tournament Director Engr. Rey Cris Urbiztondo led the closing rites in this 2-day (July 9 and 10) chess tournament, backed up by Gov. Henry S. Oaminal,  Mayor Henry Oaminal, Jr. and Rep. Sancho Fernando Oaminal.

“The event is aimed at developing good thinkers through the understanding of chess strategies and tactics, improving the logical abilities and rational thinking and reasoning of the participants, and instilling a sense of self-confidence, self-worth and camaraderie,” said Engr. Urbiztondo, an online Arena Grandmaster and director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines under the leadership of its chairman/president Prospero “Butch” Arreza Pichay Jr.

Sandeep Santhosh wins 4th ISC Triumph Cup Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024

Sandeep Santhosh, Christy George and Anecx Kanjiravila B C scored 8/9 each at 4th ISC Triumph Cup Below 1800 Rating Tournament 2024. Sandeep won the tournament due to better tie-break score. Christy and Anecx were placed second and third respectively. Only Sandeep remained undefeated among them.

Total prize fund of the tournament was ₹499999. The top three prizes were ₹51000 + trophy, ₹45000 and ₹35000 each.

Top three score 8/9

Ebin Benny was the sole leader heading into the final round 7.5/8. Six players – Sandeep Santhosh, Shanmugasundaram G, Anecx Kanjiravila B C, Christy George, Aron Rose and Allen Varghese were trailing him by a half point. Sandeep defeated Ebin to become the champion. Christy scored a win over Allen and Anecx was victorious against Shanmugasundaram. Christy secured second place and Anecx third.

A total of 445 players took part from various parts of the country, one from New Zealand and two from the USA in this three-day nine round Swiss-league Rating tournament. It was organized by International School of Chess Foundation at Sri Swathi Thirunnal College of Music, Thycud in Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala from 15th to 17th June 2024. The time control of the event was 30 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.

Sharan Rao dominates Hubli Rapid Rating Open 2024 in India

IM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win All India Rapid Rating Open 2024 held 22nd and 23rd June 2024 at Hubli, Karnataka.

He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Prajwal P Shet and CM Soham Datar scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Sharan defeated India’s 85th and latest GM P Shyam Nikhil in the final round to become the champion.

The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹35000 + trophy, ₹25000 + trophy and ₹20000 each.

This was Sharan’s third tournament triumph of the month and fifth of the year. He also won one more rating tournament in the same month.

The tournament was organized by KLE Technological University, Hubbali, Rotary Club of Hubli North and Dharwad District Chess Association at Dr. Prabhakar Kore Indoor Sports Arena, KLE Technological University in Hubbali, Karnataka on 22nd and 23rd June 2024.

IM Aditya Arfan and Ivana Lasama Win Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls in Indonesia

IM Aditya Arfan and Ivana Lasama won the Eastern Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championships, respectively, held 3-11 July 2024 at the Gunadarma University, Karawaci, Tangerang, Banten, Indonesia. A total of 49 boys and 34 girls from seven countries saw action. The event was organized by the Indonesian Chess Federation under the auspices of FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.
