Tight Race in Homestretch of Asian Youth Chess Championship

After round 7, there is a tight race in the homestretch of the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan.  A record 649 players from 33 countries are competing in the Asian Youth Chess Championship which began 9th June 2024. Solo Leaders Emerge at Asian Youth Chess Championship Halfway Mark

Solo leaders have emerged after five rounds of the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Visit chess-results.com for round by round standings and links to live games and official site.

Eldar Orozbaev of Kyrgyzstan leads the under-18 boys alone with 5 points.

Ragavesh Velavaa of India leads the under-16 boys alone with 4.5 points.

FM Radin Yadegar of Iran and FM Artyom Bogdanov of Kazakhstan share the lead in the under-14 boys with 4.5 points each.

Theophane Lenin Adkil of India and Ramtin Kakavand of Iran share the lead in the under-12 with 4.5 points each.

Aldiyar Kadyr of Kazakhstan grabbed solo lead with 5 points in the boys under-10.

Mohammad Taha Malaknzhad of Iran leads the under-8 boys alone with 5 points.

In the Girls division, WFM Anna Shukhman of Russia, playing under the FIDE flag, is alone with 5 points after same number of rounds.

Five players are tied for the lead in the Girls under-16 category.

Mariya N. Vlasova of Russia leads alone with 4.5 points in the Girls under-14 age group.

Tran Le Vy of Vietnam leads alone with a perfect 5 points in the Girls under-12.

Alisa Genrietta Yunker of Russia and Bijesh Divi of India share the lead in the Girls 10 with 4.5 points each.

Umesh Marathe Narayan of India leads the Girls-8 alone with 5 points.

Andrew Elpedes Wins IIEE Pampanga Independence Day Chess Tournament

Andrew Elpedes swept his assignments and scored 5.0 points to win the Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) Pampanga Independence Day chess tournament held 12th June 2024 in Angeles City, Pampanga, Philippines.
Elpedes opened his campaign with a win over Ryan Dimayuga then followed it with victories over IIEE National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez, Candidate Master Genghis Imperial, Engr. Michael Suacillo and Noel Jay Estacio.
“I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in IIEE and IECEP joined the tournament,” said Elpedes, a former varsity chess player of the multi-titled Rizal Technological University, Mandaluyong City.
Suacillo and Imperial occupied the second to third spots with 4.0 points each.
Unheralded Fabian Elago upset reigning back-to-back Asian Senior 65 over category champion IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad in the final round to catch up Vincent Ryu Dimayuga.
Dimayuga and Elago finished the tournament with similar 3.5 points; Engr. Evaristo Tizon Jr., Estacio, Arena FIDE Master Seth Heherson Flores, De Leon, Dubai based Engr. Danny Reyes and Joseph Richard Sajugla finished with identical 3.0 points.
Earlier, Philippine Sports Expo (PSE) President Michael Herrera and 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., made the ceremonial moves kicking off the one-day tournament. the event was also graced by Philippines Society of Mechanical Engineer (PSME) foundation president Engr. Roger Reyes, IIEE Branding Chairman Menandro Lim , IM Bagamasbad, Dubai-based entrepreneur/Engr. Danilo “Danny” Reyes, Mr. Archimedes De Leon, Mam Katherine Joyce Tablao of Smart Option/3M, Mr. Gary Arriola, lead vocalist of the band the Boyfriends, US based Mr. Jessie Villasin, IIEE Pampanga Former President Engr. Giovanni Aquino, Engr. Alvarez,  eventual champion Elpedes, Brian Angelo Young (son of IM Angelo Young) and live sketch portrait expert KC De Guzman.

Kazybek Nogerbek is World Junior Champion, Divya Deshmukh Wins World Girls

IM Kazybek Nogerbek of Kazakhstan beat erstwhile solo leader GM Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia in the final round to win the World Junior Chess Championship held 2-13 June 2024 in Gujarat, India. Nogerbek prevailed in the Buchholz cut-1 tie break over GM Emin Ohanyan of Armenia who won the silver medal with similar 8.5 score. GM Luka Budsavljevic of Serbia won the bronze with 8 points and better tie break over Gharibyan and IM Tobias Koelle of Germany.

In the World Girls Championship, top seed IM Divya Deshmukh lived up to her billing as she finished unbeaten with 10 points out of 11 rounds. Deshmukh beat WGM Beloslava Krasteva of Bulgaria in the final round.

GM Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia (above left) beat IM Rudik Makarian of Russia in the 10th round to grab solo lead with 8 points after the penultimate round of the World Junior Chess Championship in Gujarat, India. Four players are in second slot with 7.5 points each, namely IM Kazybek Nogerbek of Kazakhstan, GM Emin Ohanyan of Armenia, IM Daniel Quizon of the Philippines and GM Luka Budisavljevic of Serbia.

In the World Girls Championship, IM Divya Deshmukh (above) of host India beat compatriot WFM Jian Sachi to maintain her solo lead with 9 points out of 10 rounds. Half a point behind is WIM Marian Mikrtchyan of Armenia while two other players trail with 7.5 points each, namely WGM Ravi Rakshitta of India and WIM Ayan Allahjverdiyeva of Azerbaijan.

5-Way Tie for Lead in World Juniors, Divya Deshmukh Leads World Girls

Five boys share the lead with two rounds remaining in the World Juniors Chess Championship in Gujarat, India. Tied with 7 points each out of 9 rounds are IM Nogerbek Kazybek of Kazakhstan, IM Rudik Makarian of Russia playing under the FIDE flag, GM Cardoso Gabriel of Colombia, IM Daniel Quizon of the Philippines and GM Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia. Three others are half a point behind within striking distance at 6.5 points apiece.

Recarte Tiauson Wins 5th Mayor Fermin Mabulo Open Invitational Chess Tournament

Recarte Tiauson of Barangay Mabca Municipality of Sagñay, Camarines Sur won the 5th Mayor Fermin Mabulo Open Invitational Chess Tournament held June 8 to 9, 2024 in San Fernando, Camarines Sur, Philippines.

The 36-year-old Tiauson bagged the top spot after registering the highest output of 6.5 points.

He had previously won the Jesse Robredo Memorial Chess Tournament III and the 2nd Greyhound Open Chess Tournament for a cause, both held in Naga City, Philippines.

Tiauson, playing under the guidance of Mayor John Vincent B. Fuentebella, received the top purse of P10,000 for his efforts.

Leo Mirana of Goa and National Master Carlo Lorena of Daraga occupied the second to third spots with 6.0 points each.
Romy Jun Malate of Naga, Patrick Ismael Credo of Sipocot and National Master Glennen Artuz of Naga wound up fourth, fifth and sixth with identical 5.5 points.
It shall be recalled that Tiauson finished third in the 8th HDBank Cup International Open Chess Tournament Challenger category title at the Army Hotel in Hanoi, Vietnam in 2018.-Marlon Bernardino-
