Here are the top rated Asians men and women in the June 2024 FIDE Rating List. Divya Deshmukh (IND) (photo above) and Leya Garifullina (RUS) did an excellent job in the 7th Sharjah Challengers 2024, tying for first place and earning significant rating points in this competition. As a result, both are joining the top 25 Women for the first time.

Jirah Floravie Cutiyog Wins 2024 Philippine Age Group Championships Girls U16

Jirah Floravie Cutiyog won the 2024 National Age Group Chess Championships U-16 Girls Elimination FIDE Standard tournament on June 4 at the Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City, Philippines.
The 15-year-old prodigy defeated Kristel Love Nietes in 58 moves of Scandinavian Defense to clinch the crown with 6.5 points in the weeklong event, presented by Negros Oriental Gov. Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria in close cooperation with Negros Oriental Congressman Manuel Sagarbarria, organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by it’s chairman/ president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr.
Cutiyog is a Grade 9 student of Bethel Academy of Sta Clara General Trias Cavite.
Cutiyog opened her campaign with a win over Alyssa Gale Deposoy and followed it up with victories over Giesel Pacubat (Round 2), Maryss Annxeniel Caldoza (Round 3), Zhaoyu Capilitan (Round 4), Anna Beatrice Bombales (Round 5), Yezka Mendoza (Round 7) and Nietes (Round 8). She drew with Florence Gayle Isabedra in the sixth round.
Among those who are supporting her chess campaign here and abroad are Mayor Luis Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Labuguen, Cavite Sixth Dist. Rep. Antonio Ferrer, Sports Head Rodolfo Comandante Jr. and Bethel Academy of Sta Clara General Trias Cavite.
Cutiyog is fresh from winning the 1st HS Tabernilla Surveying and Engineering Services Open Rapid Chess Tournament held at City of Imus Sports Complex, Imus, Cavite last May 11.
She defeated International Master Ronald Bancod in the first round, Clark Kaeron Kwan in the second round, Arena FIDE Master Castelgandolfo Yray in the third round, FIDE Master Mark Jay Bacojo in the fourth round, Angele Tenshi Biete in the sixth and penultimate round and FIDE Master Roel Abelgas in the seventh and final round. She split the points with International Master Michael Concio Jr. in the fifth round.
Cutiyog had also captured 3 gold medals and 1 silver in chess representing City of General Trias during the DepEd Calabarzon 2024 Regional Athletic Association meet (RAAM) Secondary Girls Chess Tournament held last April 5-13, 2024 at the Emmanuel Christian School, City of Santa Rosa, Laguna.
Cutiyog won the Secondary Girls blitz (individual) and Standard (Individual) event with a similar perfect 7.0 points.
Cutiyog also saw action in the 2023 World Youth Chess Championship held in Montesilvano, Italy last November.
Her next tournament are the National Age Group Chess Championships Grandfinals 2024 to be held on June 22-30 at the Dapitan City Sports Complex, Zamboanga del Norte and the Eastern Asia Chess Championships on July 12 to 21 in Penang, Malaysia.-Marlon Bernardino-

IM Michael Concio Jr. Wins 64th San Carlos Charter Day Open Rapid Chess Tournament

IM Michael Concio Jr. won the 64th San Carlos Charter Day Open Rapid Chess Tournament on June 2nd at the Marina Park, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. Visit chess-results.com.
Concio tallied 8.5 points to claim the PHP54,000 champion’s purse and a trophy in the nine-round Swiss system tournament, jointly organized by San Carlos City LGU and sportsman/businessman Henry Silva.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to the late (Cavite 4th District) Cong. Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga Jr., mayor Jenny Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas,” the 18-year-old Information Systems freshman at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas in Cavite province said.
Concio defeated Nina Dela Torre in the first round, Trine Olmedo (2nd), Edsel Vosotros (3rd), Melito Ocsan Jr. (4th), NM Edsel Montoya (5th) Kevin Arquero (6th) GM Darwin Laylo (7th), and FM Alekhine Nouri (8th).
He drew with Michel Jacson Ambuang in the ninth and final round.
IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia from Manila, received PHP20,000 for finishing second while third placer Nouri took home PHP15,000.

GM Mahammad Muradli of Azerbaijan wins 24th Dubai Open

Grandmaster Mahammad Muradli of Azeerbaijan claimed the title at the 24th Dubai Open Chess Tournament after a draw with China’s GM Changren Dai in Sunday’s final round at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. In Category B, Libya’s Yousef A. Alhassadi took the title after a draw with young Chinese player Zilong Yang in the final round. Alhassadi finished with 7.5 points, while Yang took second place with seven points.

 

FIDE World Junior Championship kicks off in Gujarat, India

The 2024 edition of the FIDE World Junior Chess Championship has just commenced in Radisson GIFT City, Gujarat, India. Visit chess-result.com for round by round standings.

Almost 230 players from 44 countries are participating in this competition, with 125 players (including 13 GMs) from 39 countries in the open section. The highest-rated player in the tournament is GM Abhimanyu Mishra (2627) from the USA.

The girl’s section attracted 101 players (including two WGMs) from 27 countries. IM Divy Deshmukh (2456) from India is the top seed in this tournament.

The first day of the championship was marked by a technical meeting led by the chief arbiter, IA Ashot Vardapetyan. This was followed by a grand opening ceremony, graced by the presence of Ankit Dalal, Dev Patel – Secretary of the All India Chess Federation, Geet Sethi – professional billiard player, and Grandmasters Viswanathan Anand and Tejas Bakre.

GM Viswanathan Anand and Geet Sethi made the first symbolic move of the event.

Registration for the 2nd Cebu Chess Society Cup is now open.

Entry fee for the two-day tournament slated on July 6-7 at the GMall of Cebu is pegged at P500 for the Open Category, P300 for the 17 & Under category, P250 for the 13 Under category and P200 for the 9 & Under category.

To register, one may log in to https://bit.ly/2ndCCSCupRegForm and fill in completely all the necessary details.

The event organizers will not be accepting onsite registration, and the deadline is set on June 30 or until all the slots are filled whichever comes first.

Over P125,000 in cash prize will be given away to the winners in all categories. The champion in the open division will take home P20,000, while second to fifth will get P15,000, P10,000, P7,000 and P5,000, respectively. The top five finishers in the 17 & Under will pocket P7,000, P5,000, P3,000, P2,000 and P1,500. The top five finishers in the 13 & Under will get P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,500 and P1,000 while the winners in the 9 & Under age-groups will receive a prize of P3,000, P2,000, P1,000, P800 and P700. The top 5 in all categories will each receive a customized medal.
