IM Michael Concio Jr. Wins 64th San Carlos Charter Day Open Rapid Chess Tournament

IM Michael Concio Jr. won the 64th San Carlos Charter Day Open Rapid Chess Tournament on June 2nd at the Marina Park, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. Visit chess-results.com.
Concio tallied 8.5 points to claim the PHP54,000 champion’s purse and a trophy in the nine-round Swiss system tournament, jointly organized by San Carlos City LGU and sportsman/businessman Henry Silva.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to the late (Cavite 4th District) Cong. Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga Jr., mayor Jenny Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas,” the 18-year-old Information Systems freshman at Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas in Cavite province said.
Concio defeated Nina Dela Torre in the first round, Trine Olmedo (2nd), Edsel Vosotros (3rd), Melito Ocsan Jr. (4th), NM Edsel Montoya (5th) Kevin Arquero (6th) GM Darwin Laylo (7th), and FM Alekhine Nouri (8th).
He drew with Michel Jacson Ambuang in the ninth and final round.
IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia from Manila, received PHP20,000 for finishing second while third placer Nouri took home PHP15,000.

GM Mahammad Muradli of Azerbaijan wins 24th Dubai Open

Grandmaster Mahammad Muradli of Azeerbaijan claimed the title at the 24th Dubai Open Chess Tournament after a draw with China’s GM Changren Dai in Sunday’s final round at the Dubai Chess and Culture Club. In Category B, Libya’s Yousef A. Alhassadi took the title after a draw with young Chinese player Zilong Yang in the final round. Alhassadi finished with 7.5 points, while Yang took second place with seven points.

 

FIDE World Junior Championship kicks off in Gujarat, India

The 2024 edition of the FIDE World Junior Chess Championship has just commenced in Radisson GIFT City, Gujarat, India. Visit chess-result.com for round by round standings.

Almost 230 players from 44 countries are participating in this competition, with 125 players (including 13 GMs) from 39 countries in the open section. The highest-rated player in the tournament is GM Abhimanyu Mishra (2627) from the USA.

The girl’s section attracted 101 players (including two WGMs) from 27 countries. IM Divy Deshmukh (2456) from India is the top seed in this tournament.

The first day of the championship was marked by a technical meeting led by the chief arbiter, IA Ashot Vardapetyan. This was followed by a grand opening ceremony, graced by the presence of Ankit Dalal, Dev Patel – Secretary of the All India Chess Federation, Geet Sethi – professional billiard player, and Grandmasters Viswanathan Anand and Tejas Bakre.

GM Viswanathan Anand and Geet Sethi made the first symbolic move of the event.

Registration for the 2nd Cebu Chess Society Cup is now open.

Entry fee for the two-day tournament slated on July 6-7 at the GMall of Cebu is pegged at P500 for the Open Category, P300 for the 17 & Under category, P250 for the 13 Under category and P200 for the 9 & Under category.

The event organizers will not be accepting onsite registration, and the deadline is set on June 30 or until all the slots are filled whichever comes first.

Over P125,000 in cash prize will be given away to the winners in all categories. The champion in the open division will take home P20,000, while second to fifth will get P15,000, P10,000, P7,000 and P5,000, respectively. The top five finishers in the 17 & Under will pocket P7,000, P5,000, P3,000, P2,000 and P1,500. The top five finishers in the 13 & Under will get P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, P1,500 and P1,000 while the winners in the 9 & Under age-groups will receive a prize of P3,000, P2,000, P1,000, P800 and P700. The top 5 in all categories will each receive a customized medal.

Luxman Wijesuriya Re-elected President of Chess Federation of Sri Lanka

Luxman Wijesuriya and his team were again unanimously re-elected to drive the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka for the next term at the Annual General Meeting of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka.

The Annual General Meeting of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was held ao 30th of May 2024 at Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo at 5.00 p.m. All the member institutions with the Sports Ministry representative and the Election Committee elected at a CFSL EGM earlier were present. Mr. Wijesuriya is serving as a counselor in the FIDE Chess in Schools Commission, General Secretary of the Commonwealth Chess Association and as a Vice President of the Asian Chess Federation as well.

Mr. Wijesuriya, two times National Chess Champion in 1996 & 2000 who has driven Chess to reach the Asian & World standard is totally committed for the game. He and his team have brought chess to a greater height touching all possible areas of the game, training National players, having numerous Chess events, representing all most all the official Chess events in Asia and the World. He also has brought many International Chess Tournaments to Sri Lanka, Now the Chess Federation is planning 4 official international events, Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024, Western Asian Junior Chess Championships 2024, Asian Corporate Event, and the Commonwealth Chess Championships 2024 to hold in this year.

The Deputy President, Deepthi Hewageegana, has represented Sri Lanka and serves as the CEO of the United Tractors Ltd. There are two former National Chess Champions, Rajeendra Kalugampitiya and Pramodya Senanayake while most of the others have played the game to certain level. The most of them are having high academic profile being graduates of main Universities in the country. We have no doubt that this team will bring our beloved game to the next level.

Panabo Knights Chess Club lead Amateur Chess Association of the Philippines Awards

Panabo Knights Chess Club won the Association of Chess Amateurs of the Philippines, Inc. (ACAPI) 1st President’s Cup 2024 Online Chess Tournament and were honored at the online Awards ceremonies May 28, 2024.

The Panabo Knights led by National Master Henry Roger Lopez (photo above), won the championship in the Open Division and the Youth Division. They placed second in the Senior Division and the PWD Division.

“Due to the excellence shown by the Panabo Knights Chess Club , they were honored as overall champion with a corresponding prize in addition to the prize in each division,” ACAPI President Engineer Rey Cris Urbiztondo announced.

Also winning were the Davao Durianburg Stallions of National Arbiter Ely Acas, who won the PWD Division, second in the Open Division and third in the Female Division.

Coach Boyet Tardecilla’s Imus Cefag PPKGCC won the Female Division and placed third in the PWD Division.
The Las Pinas TFCC CMC of Coach Ferdinand Reyes placed second in the Female Division and third in the Open Division and Senior Division.

Tuguegarao A won the championship in the Under 12 Division and Tuguegarao C was third while IM Ronald Bancod’s Laoag Sunshine City placed second in the Under 12 Division.

The four-man Madridejos Knights Chess Club became the first ever senior division champion of the  President’s Cup online tournament.

Led by playing team owner Engr. Josito “Jojo” Clamor Dondon based in Texas, United States, the Madridejos Knights completed a clean sweep of Davao del Norte’s Panabo Knights Chess Club in their four-round championship match to clinch the historic crown.

ACAPI President AGM Urbiztondo expressed gratitude to all who participated as well as the composed officials of ACAPI for the successful online tournament.

Eighteen-year-old GM Bardiya Daneshvar of Iran topped the 7th Sharjah Masters held 14-22 May 2024 in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. FIDE International Organizers Seminar in Arabic Slated 2-6 August

Asian Chess Federation will organize an online International Organizers Seminar in Arabic 2-6 August 2024 by Zoom to educate organizers how to handle an International Event and the regulations necessary for the event to be FIDE certified. Applicants for the FIDE International Organizer title are required to attend a seminar and pass an examination in order to obtain their FIDE IO title. Certificates of Completion will be awarded to successful participants.
