Palma Tops PTC World Engineering Day Rapid Chess Tournament

Michael Palma of the Institute of Electronic Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) won the individual men’s tournament in the PTC World Engineering Day Rapid Chess Tournament.

Palma edged International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad of the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) in the tie break as they both scored 5 wins and a draw with each other for a total score of 5.5.

The top female chesser was Jellie Ann Magro of the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) while Lorenze Angelo Guerra was honored as the top student and Elmer Claveria as the top player with disability.

The team chess event was ruled by IIEE. PSME is 2nd place followed by IECEP as 3rd place.

Earlier, Asia’s first grandmaster and Hall of Famer Eugene Torre (right) and GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. led the ceremonial moves to officially open the Philippine Technological Council (PTC) rapid chess tournament held at Koten Enterprise in Pasay City last Sunday, March 24. The game was part of the country’s celebration of World Engineering Day.

The opening ceremony was also graced by IIEE National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez, Koten Enterprises Company Inc. Sales and Marketing Manager Malou Doles, Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) National Past President Engr. Roger Reyes, PTC World Engineering Day 2024 chess event chairman Engr. Donald Lapiguera, IIEE National VP Internal Alberto Herrera Jr. and Shimmer and Shield Car Coating CEO/President Jeff Bugayong.
The tournament arbiter was National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. Torre was also recognized by the group as presented by Bugayong in his speech.

 

Jirah Floravie Cutiyog Wins Inter-Agency Chess Group Tournament

Jirah Floravie Cutiyog, a Grade 9 student of Bethel Academy of General Trias Cavite swept her assignments and scored 6.0 points to top the 6th IACG (Inter-Agency Chess Group) Invitational Chess Tournament held at the Robinson Place Imus last Saturday, March 23 in Imus City, Cavite, Philippines.
Cutiyog opened her campaign with a win over Roberto Biron then followed it up with victories over Resito David, Richfield Rivera, Lourecel Hernandez Ecot, Renie Malupa and Jerome Angelo Aragones.
The 15 year-old chess wizard’s run was a testament of her mastery in the Opening under the guidance of coach Arena FIDE Master Ederwin Estavillo.
Cutiyog’s international stint was in the 2023 World Youth Chess Championship held in Montesilvano, Italy last November.
Among those who are supporting her chess campaign here and abroad are Mayor Luis Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Labuguen, Cavite Sixth Dist. Rep. Antonio Ferrer, Sports Head Rodolfo Commandante Jr. and Bethel Academy of General Trias Cavite.
Ecot, who lost to Cutiyog in the fourth round, bounced back after beating John Martin Firmalino and John Lee Antonio in the last two rounds to clinch solo second place with 5.0 points.
Malupa, Aragones, Jon Mark Anarna, Biron, Noel Trines Jr. and Genesis Jahk Andres finished behind Cutiyog and Ecot with identical 4.5 points, while Rivera, Gilbert Berongoy,  Antonio,  Firmalino and Carlito Andres Jr. have 4.0 points each.-Marlon Bernardino-

Kevin Arquero Wins Balinas Open Rapid Tournament

Kevin Arquero beat all of his six opponents before halving the point in his final match to win the GM Rosendo Carreon Balinas Jr. Open rapid chess tournament held at the 3rd floor Robinsons Mall, Galleria, Ortigas corner Edsa, Quezon City, Philippines last Saturday, March 23.

The top player of PCAP’s Cavite Spartans chess team finished the 7-Round Swiss System tournament with 6.5 points in the 1-day event backed up by Balinas family, Shimmer & Shield Car Coating President/CEO Jeff Bugayong, RDR Business Solution Inc. President/ CEO/Pambansang Business Mentor Reymond Delos Reyes, Atty. Juman Paa, Atty. Rodolfo Enrique “Rudy” Rivera, Atty. Nikki de Vega , Dr. Ariel Potot, Engr. Roger Reyes, Mr. Travis Vincent Chua, Mr. Jessie Villasin, Mr. Jojo Legaspi, Mr. Mark John Centillo, Mr. Andrew Elpedes, Mam Kathryn Ann-Hardegen, Mam Jennifer Cruz, IDIM DIY Bakery, Nova Wellness Store, Starshots Coffee, Byaherong Arbiter, and Robinsons Galleria Ortigas.

Arquero, a member of the multi-titled Philippine Army chess team defeated  Yureeh Panganiban, Mark Gerald Reyes, NM Carlo Magno Rosaupan,  Benjie Bercadez, IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia and GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., respectively.

Arquero’s draw with NM Oscar Joseph Cantela sealed his campaign to win the tournament organized by Bayanihan Chess Club headed by co-founding chairman Dr. Joe Balinas and Engr. Antonio “Uncle Paps” Balinas in close cooperation with Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) National Past President Engr. Allan Anthony Alvarez.

Arquero thanked the Balinas family for sponsoring this tournament. He pocketed P10,000 for his efforts.
Cantela, a Grade 11 – Senior High of FEU Diliman whose roots are from Masbate, on the other hand, figured in a triple tie with Antonio and 8-time US champion IM Angelo Abundo Young with similar 6.0 points but Antonio settled for the second place honors by virtue of a higher tie-breaker.
Antonio received P5,000, while Young and Cantela  got P2,500 and P500 for winding up third and fourth, respectively.

Garcia, FM Randy Segarra and Rommel Lucion finished the tournament with similar 5.5 points while Bercadez, CM Genghis Imperial, NM Lorenzo Aaron Cantela,  Tristan Jared Cervero, Jerich Cajeras, IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad and Rosaupan have identical 5.0 points.

Six year old Almario Marlon I “Baby Uno” Bernardino was the youngest participant.

Jhulo Goloran Wins FIDE Rating Tournament

Jhulo Goloran emerged as the champion in the Mayor Atty. Christian D. Natividad Classification FIDE Rated Chess Tournament (Category B 1999 Below) held last Sunday, March 24 at the Robinsons Place Malolos in Malolos City, Bulacan, Philippines.

Goloran, an employee of Datamatics who played before for the Manila Indios Bravos in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), pocketed the P10,000 purse and the trophy for ruling the tournament which fielded over 67 participants.

He had a near-perfect campaign after tallying 5.5 points in the six-round Swiss system competition.

Goloran defeated NM Karlycris Clarito  Jr., Kate Nicole Ordizo,  Clark Kaeron Kwan, Ricardo Batcho and Jeremy Marticio in the first and fifth rounds, respectively.
He snapped his five-match winning streak when he had a draw against National Master Mar Aviel Carredo of Dasmariñas City, Cavite in the sixth and final round.

With 5.0 points each, Vince Duane Pascual of Bulacan, Woman National Master Francois Marie Magpily of Makati and Woman National Master Jersey Marticio of Cabuyao settled for a tie for second, third and fourth place.

The fifth to 10th placers were Carredo (4.5 points), Jeremy Marticio (4.5 points), AGM Johann Cedrick Gaddi (4.5 points), Alfredo Balquin Jr. (4.5 points), Adrian de Luna (4.0 poins) and Kwan (4.0 points).

It shall be recalled that Goloran spearheaded  Datamatics into over-all champion in the BPO Olympics chess fest last December.

Sri Lanka National Chess Championships Offers Cash Award of One Million Rupees

The Sri Lanka National Chess Championships (open and Women) started 20th March 2024 at the Auditorium of the Institute of Sports Medicine with a total prize fund of One Million Rupees. The most prestigious Chess Event in the country with the top 14 ranked players in both Genders in Sri Lanka will be continued on 23rd, 24th, 25th, 29th, 30th and 31st of March 2024 at the same venue. All events are played with top technical facilities using DGT Boards and games are livestreamed.

 

There are 3 former National Champions, IM LMST De Silva (Nalanda College), IM Ranindu Liyanage (Ananda College) and IM Harshana Thilakarathne (University of Moratuwa) in the open section while 3 Women’s National Champions, WCM Sanudula Dahamdi (Musaeus College), WCM THD Niklesha (University of Kelaniya) and Nethmi Fernando (SLT Campus) competing in the Women’s National Chess Championship 2024. World Cadet Chess Champion – Under 12 Girls Oshini Devindya Gunawardena is also among the contestants.


The event has become the youngest event according to the average age for all these years. In the open section, the average age is 20 year while in the Women’s section, the average age is 15 years only.
This year’s event has become more competitive due to the FIDE world Chess Olympiad slated in September 2024 in Budapest, Hungary and the team will be picked from this Championships.
The Chess Federation is offering cash awards of Rs. 250,000/-, Rs. 150,000/-, Rs. 100,000/-, Rs. 60,000/- and Rs. 40,000/- for the top five players in the Open event while 200,000/-, Rs. 100,000/-, Rs. 50,000/-, Rs. 30,000/- and Rs. 20,000/- for the Women’s event. The last years Champions were International Master (IM), LMST De Silva of Nalanda College and Women Candidate Master (WCM) Sanudula Dahamdi of Musaeus College.
Instead of above three players, 11 other players, AACB Amarasinghe, Dhanushka Bandara, TSS Peiris(Maroons CC), DDLN Dandeniya & SDBK Senevirathne (both Maliyadeva College), Pesandu Liyanage & Senuka Ashwin Ahangama (Both DS Senanayake College), Vinuka Wijerathne (Royal College), Dinujaya Kodithhuwakku (Mathara Rahula College), B Janukshan (Jaffna Hindu College), Kosala Sandeep Amaratunge (Boxwell College, Kaluthara) are participateing in the Open section. Instead of 4 Girls mentioned above, 10 more players, Janandani Abeysinghe (HNB), Chenaya Ekarathne (Musaeus College), Esandi Newansa & Methushi Amaya Fernando, (Both Dharmasoka College), Esha Pallie (Visakha Vidyalaya), Dulinma Hemalini Rathnayake (Viharamahadevi BMV, Kiribathgoda), Theruni Jayasekara, Sandithi Kaushalya Alwis (Anula Vidyalaya), Hesara Gunasekera (Mahamaya Girls College), Jayandi Bimansa (Bandaragama Central College) are playing in the Women event.
