GM Sayantan Das of India won the 1st SOA International GM Chess Tournament held Jan. 28 to Feb. 4 at the SOA Campus 2 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Central Asia Youth Chess Championship Slated August in Kyrgyzstan

The Kyrgyz Chess Union, together with the Public Foundation named after Ulan Cholponbaev, has the honor to invite all National Chess Federations of Zone 3.4 affiliated with FIDE to participate in the Central Asia Youth Chess Championship (U8, U10, U12, U14 and U16) which will be held from 10th August (arrival) to 18th August 2024 (departure) in Korumdu, Issyk-Kul region, Kyrgyzstan, “Simiram” hotel.

IM Daniel Quizon Tops PCAP Rapid Chess

IM Daniel Quizon topped the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) rapid chess championship dubbed as San Juan Predators Chairman’s Cup on Sunday night, January 28, 2024 at the Level 1 Digiworld Robinsons Galleria, Ortigas Center in Quezon City, Philippines.

Quizon, a 19-year-old International Master (IM), defeated his seventh and final-round game with FIDE Master Roel Abelgas to rule the one-day meet, backed by The Michael Angelo Foundation Inc. and organized by HubzStar Chess Center, sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) in cooperation with PCAP Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria.
It was the first title for Quizon at the start of the year after he reigned supreme in the National Championship in Marikina City in December last year.
But known for his lightning-quick moves being the country’s blitz king, Quizon, who will represent the country in the Budapest Chess Olympiad slated for September 10 to 23, extricated his way out of trouble enroute for a win against FM Abelgas.
Quizon, a member of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the guidance of mayor Jenny Barzaga, Rep. Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga Jr. and coach FM Roel Abelgas took the top purse worth P10,000 plus a beautiful trophy and slot for the grand finals this year after topping the chess fest being held to coincide with the birthday celebration of San Juan Predators Team Owner and PCAP Chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua.
He defeated Davin Sean Romualdez in the first round, National Master Ivan Travis Cu (2nd round), National Master Edmundo Gatus (3rd round), Woman International Master Kylen Joy Mordido (4th round), Fide Master Mark Jay Bacojo (6th round) and FM Abelgas (7th round).
He split the points with Fide Master Alekhine Nouri in the fifth round.
Quizon is a BS Information Systems freshman at the Kolehiyo ng Lungsod ng Dasmariñas.
FM Nouri and International Master Chito Garma finished the tournament with similar 6.0 points; FIDE Master Randy Segarra scored 5.5 points while FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca, FM Bacojo, International Master Michael Concio Jr., National Master Edmundo Gatus, International Master Angelo Young, FM Abelgas, National Master Oscar Joseph Cantela and Kevin Arquero have identical 5.0 points.
Adjudged category winners were Atty. Rodolfo Enrique Rivera (Top PWD), Arnel Ellis (Top Senior), WIM Mordido (Top Lady), NM Cantela (Top Highschool), Clord Bragais (Top Unrated) and Jason Rojo (Top 2000 and below).
Meanwhile,  National Master Mar Aviel Carredo won the Aspirant (Under 15) division while Caleb Royce Garcia topped the kiddies (Under 10) category.

Carlo Magno Rosaupan Wins 4th Noypi Chess Training Tournament


National Master Carlo Magno Rosaupan emerged as the champion in the 4th Noypi Chess Training Tournament-1850 and below last Sunday, January 28, 2024, at the SM Center Sangandaan, Caloocan City, Philippiines.

NM Rosaupan, who plays for the Cavite Spartans in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), pocketed the P5,000 purse and the medal for ruling the tournament which saw 75 woodpushers take part.
He had a near-perfect campaign after tallying 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss system competition.
He defeated Jian Cedrick Bautista in the first round, Emiliano Colindres in the second round, Edwin Aguilar in the fourth round, Emil Chua in the fifth round, Marlou Guatno in the sixth round and Randy Turreda in the seventh and final round.
He snapped his second-match winning streak when he had a draw against engr. Ernie Faeldonia in the third round.
The 44 year old Rosaupan holds the Rank of Ssg at the Philippine Army and Unit assignment SSC, HHSG, PA.
Harris De Guia went on to place second overall with 6.0 points.
De Guia’s second place finish earned him P2,500 and a medal, while the third place went to Jaime Criste similar 6.0 points to earn P1,500 and a medal.
The fourth to 10th placers were John Lee Antonio (5.5 ), Jonathan Reyes (5.5), Randy Turreda (5.5), engr. Ernie Faeldonia (5.5), Clefzon Limpo (5.0), Joshua Roque (5.0) and Jerick Faeldonia (5.0).
The organizer of the tournament, National Arbiter Richard Dela Cruz said that this is their fourth time to host a Noypi chess tilt featuring pro and amateur woodpushers, backed up by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman and President Rep. Pakistan to Launch Large-scale Chess in Education Program

Chess Federation of Pakistan (CFP), Government of Pakistan (GoP), FIDE, FIDE EDU, Asian Chess Federation (ACF) are teaming up to launch the largest CIE program in the world targeting 10,000 public and private sector schools nationwide. The Prime Minister of Pakistan will inaugurate the program at the Prime Minister Secretariat in Islamabad on 2nd February 2024. The ceremony is to be attended by the key CFP, FIDE, ACF and EDU officials, Federal and provincial ministers and Secretaries, Senators, diplomatic representatives, World Bank and UN representatives, education ministry officials from all over the country. The fourth edition of the Queens’ Festival starts in March 2024  

The Queens’ Online Chess Festival, a series of continental women’s online blitz tournaments, is returning this spring! The fourth edition of the popular event, organised by the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess, will take place from March 09-30, 2024, on the Tornelo online platform. In 2023, over 800 female players from 124 countries participated in the third edition of the festival. Organisers hope that this time, the number of female players joining the event will exceed one thousand.

The festival welcomes all women chess players from around the world of all ages and all rating groups, including unrated chess enthusiasts. Participation is free of charge.

The festival is comprised of two competitions:

  • Queens’ Women Open Tournament (open to all female participants with FIDE ID). Continental qualifying events running from Match 09-17 and Semi-Final and Final scheduled on March 24 and 30, respectively;
  • Unrated Princesses’ tournaments (for U16 (born on 1.1.2008 or later) female players with no FIDE rating). The qualification stage is scheduled for March 24, and finals will be held on March 30.

The Queens’ Online Chess Festival 2024’s main prizes are worth fighting for. Like in the previous edition, the winners of the World Queens’ Open 2024 and Princess’ Tournament (both U9 and U16 ) will be invited to the 45th World Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest, Hungary, this September. Air tickets, full-board accommodation for three days and invitations to the Opening Ceremony of the Chess Olympiad 2024 for the winner and one accompanying person will be covered.

Al-Basher “Basty” Buto Sweeps the Inaugural Noypi FIDE-Rated Tournament


National Master Al-Basher “Basty” Buto topped the inaugural Noypi FIDE-Rated Standard Chess Tournament held January 20–21, 2024 at Robinsons Metro East in Pasig City, Philippines.

The standout player of the University of Santo Tomas chess team, a resident of Cainta, Rizal who hails from Marawi City, scored a perfect 6 out of 6 against Abraham Bayron in the first round, Matthew Gunnar Gotel in the second round, Elezer Nilo in the third round, Jemaica Yap in the fourth round, Randy Turreda in the fifth round and Joel Diaz in the sixth and final round.
National Master Phil Martin Casiguran, a rising talent from Caloocan, came in second, followed by Joel Diaz from Santa Cruz, Mindoro Occidental, Jian Carlo Rivera, Ariel Santander, Carl Daluz, Ricardo Batcho, and Kyle Ochoa, respectively.

In the meantime, the top unrated award went to Carl Andrew Castanas, while the top kids went to John Lance Valencia, the top college was awarded to John Lawrence Rivera, and the top golden boy went to Randy Turreda. Jersey Marticio was named as the top lady.
Tournament officials who supervised this event were Tournament Director and Chief Arbiter FIDE National Arbiter Richard R. Dela Cruz and FIDE National Arbiter Ranier Pascual, who acted as the Chief Arbiter.

IM Angelo Young Wins Tarlac Rapid Chess Tournament

International Master Angelo Abundo Young (right) scored a crucial win over International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad in the sixth and final round to claim the championship of the JHC Chess Club Open Rapid Chess Tournament on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the San Miguel Elementary School in Tarlac City, Philippines.

Young,  an 8-time Illinois USA Champion, prevailed after 65 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Declined Opening with the black pieces.

Young, head coach of Emilio Aguinaldo College chess team under the supervision of EAC Sports Head Dok. Lorenzo C. Lorenzo finished the six-round Swiss system competition with undefeated 5.0 points from four wins and two draws to rule the 15 minutes plus 5 seconds increment rapid time control format. The tournament was supported by Tarlac City Mayor Maria Cristina Cuello Angeles coinciding with the City’s Fiesta.

After halving the point with Joshua Magno in the second round and National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. in the third round, the Tondo, Manila resident Young, bounced back by winning three straight matches including to former solo leader IM Bagamasbad in the final round.

That was all Young needed to nail the title with the highest output of 5.0 points. He pocketed P2,000 and a trophy for his efforts.

Bagamasbad, on the other hand, figured in a two way tie for second with Magno with similar 4.5 points. Bagamasbad, the reigning back-to-back Asian Senior Chess Champion (over 65 category) settled for the second place honors by virtue of a higher tie-break.

Bagamasbad received P1,000, while Magno who drew with NM Bernardino in the last round got P500 for winding up third.
The fourth to 6th placers with 4.0 points each were CM Genghis Imperial, James Henry Calacday and NM Bernardino.
Angelito Hizon and Henry Calacday wound up seventh and eight placers with 3.5 points apiece.
Rounding up to top eleven (11) placers with 3.0 points each were Edwin Cortez, Noel Jay Estacio and AFM Romeo Rodney Palaming.

Johnny Guerrero Wins Nueva Ecija Chess Knight Rapid Chess Tournament

Johnny Guerrero won the Nueva Ecija Chess Knight Rapid Chess Tournament held at the SM Megacenter in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija last Sunday, January 14, 2023. The 37 year old Guerrero, who whors as Fire Officer 2 (F02) of the Bureau of Fire Protection, finished his campaign with a near-perfect 6.5 points after the seven-round competition.
He defeated Ronaldo Malimban in the first round, Jeremy Ramos (2nd round), Carlo Lucas (3rd round), Don Hamilton(4th round), James Henry Calacday (5th round) and Joseph Ocampo (6th round) and split the points with Era Bauto (7th round).
He bagged the title after finishing with a higher score over Don Hamilton and Bads Bugtong, who settled for second and third placers with 6.0 points apiece.
The fourth to 10th placers of the tournament were Samuel Mateo (fourth, 5.5 pts.), Era Bauto (fifth, 5.5 pts.), Kim Cabacungan (sixth, 5.5 pts.) , Roberto Mina (seventh, 5.5 pts.), Bonjino Estrada (ninth, 5.0 pts.), Joseph Ocampo (eight, 5.0 pts.) and Eduardo Lacson (tenth, 5.0 pts.).
“The tournament featured a 15-minute plus 3-second delay time control, organized by the Nueva Ecija Chess Knight,” said Atty. Juman Paa, RiChessMasters Legal Director.
The next Nueva Ecija Chess Knight rapid chess tournament is slated for February 25, delivering another opportunity for young enthusiasts to showcase their talent
