Philippines, Iran, Indonesia Lead Asian Para Games Chess

FM Sander Severino leads the Men’s Individual P1 category with 4.5 points after five rounds of the Asian Para Games Chess Competition in Hangzhou, China. Alireza Ghoorchibeygi of Iran and Yoga Indra of India are tied for the Men B1 category lead with 4.5 points each. Menandro Redor of the Philippines and Gangolli Kishan of India share the lead in the Men B2&B3 category with 4 points each.

In the women’s division, Cheyzer Crystal Mendoza of the Philippines leads with 4.5 points after 5 rounds, a full point ahead of second runners with 3.5 points each. Maliheh Safaei of Iran leads the Women B1 category with a perfect 5-point slate. Similarly Brahmana, Aisah Wijayanti Putri of Indonesia leads the Women B2&B3 category with a perfect 5 points.

4th Asian Para Games Chess Competition Starts in Hangzhou, China 

The 4th Asian Para Games Chess Competition is being held 22-28 October 2022 in Hangzhou, China with 69 disabled chess players from15 countries, namely Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

GM Joey Antonio, FM Adrian Pacis Win Asian Seniors Blitz Championships

Efren Bagamasbad, Chito Garma win Asian Seniors 65+ and 50+ Chess Championships

TAGAYTAY CITY—Filipino International Masters Jose Efren Bagamasbad and Chito Garma split the points in the 65+ and 50+ divisions, respectively to claim the crowns for the Philippines at the Asian Seniors Chess Championship held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at the Knights Templar Hotel in Tagaytay City. the event was supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.
Bagamasbad, a habitue of Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) Chess Club in Monte De Piedad Street in Cubao, Quezon City, successfully defended his 2022 crown and again emerged winner for the 65-and-over division of the 12th Asian Seniors Chess Championship.
He drew with Tuleubek Demezhanov of Kazakhstan after 48 moves of an English Opening using the white pieces in the ninth and final round.
Bagamasbad is set to leave on Monday for Terrasini, Italy for the 2023 World Seniors Chess championships from October 24 to November 6 where he is gunning for his third and final GM norms.
Garma, a two-time Olympian, bagged the 50-and-over division title after halving the point against Candidate Master Joseph Ebenezer of India in their Guico Piano skirmish held at the Knights Templar Hotel, Tagaytay City.

Bagamasbad and Garma capped their performance with similar six wins and three draws (7.5 points) in nine outings.
Pocketing the top prize of $350, the 67-year -old Bagamasbad told the media, “I’m very happy to win again, especially in an international tournament like this Asian Seniors. Christmas came early!.”
The 59-year-old Garma won the $500 cash prize after winning this title he won in the 2018 edition also in Tagaytay.
More importantly, Bagamasbad and Garma, both earned their second Grandmaster norms plus a free hotel accommodation in the 2024 World Seniors Chess Championship.
The Tagaytay tournament had 18 players in the 50-and-over division and 17 players in the 65-and-over division in the weeklong event hosted by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, Cavite Vice Governor Athena Bryana Tolentino in close cooperation with the International Chess Federation, Asian Chess Federation and National Chess Federation of the Philippines chairman and president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr.

FM Arvinder Preet Singh Wins 8th NL Pandiyar Memorial International Open

The 8th NL Pandiyar Memorial International Open Fide Rating Chess Tournament 2023 was organized by Chess in Lakecity from 15th to 19th Oct 2023 at Orbit Resort, New Bhopalpura, R K circle, Udaipur (Rajasthan), India. This tournament was organized under the aegis of FIDE, AICF and Rajasthan Chess Association.

The opening ceremony was held on 15th of Oct. in presence of Chief Guest Mr. Sanjeev Bhardwaj (Organizing Chairman), Special Guest Mr. Sanjay Bhatnagar Other dignitaries present were Adv. Mr. Praveen Kothari, Chess in Lakecity Chief Patron Mr. Tushar Mehta, IA & FI Rajendra Teli (Vice President RCA, International Arbiter & Fide Instructor), IA & NI Vikas Sahu (Organizing Secretary) and IA Neelesh Kumawat (Chief Arbiter).

 The Five day Swiss event carried a prize fund of ₹15, 01,000 and was distributed amongst different category.

 The event was conducted in standard 9 round Swiss format, with a time control of 90 minutes with an increment of 30 seconds per move. A total of 558 players Including one GM, two IMs, two FMs & one WFM participated in this tournament with players coming from RUS and host federations from 24 different states of India.

GM  Swapnil S. Dhopade from RSPB was top seed with a FIDE rating of 2469. There was one big hall where all the players accommodated to play.

At the end of final round games four players ended with 8 points out of 9 but with better tie- break Fifth seeded FM Arvinder Preet Singh (Punjab) bagged the Champion title with cash prize of Rs. 1,11000/- and a beautiful trophy. Tenth seeded Kartik Kumar Singh (Maharashtra) drew with champion of the tournament scoring 8 points grabbed 2nd position with cash prize of Rs. 71,000/- and a trophy and First seeded GM Swapnil S. Dhopade (RSPB) scored same 8 points secured third position received Rs. 41,000/- with trophy.

In the attractive rating category prizes Prithvi Sharma (Haryana) who also scored 8 points in the tournament, grabbed 1st position in 1300-1599 rating category and won 1,01,000/- and a trophy while Sathessh Kumar G (Tamilnadu) scored 6.5 points grabbed 1st position in 1000-1299 rating category and won 100,000/- and a trophy.

The team of arbiter’s was headed by Chief Arbiter IA Neelesh Kumawat &  Dy Chief: IA Rajendra Teli, IA Sunil Soni & they were ably assisted by arbiters IA Anupam Bhattacharjee, FA Chandalia, Manish, FA Jain Daksh, FA Bhawesh Pandiyar, FA Nakul Chaudhary, SNA Patel Bhaveshbhai B, SNA Patel Bhupendra, SNA Mukta Sahu, SNA Patel Kushal, SNA Jitesh Sharma, SNA Nisarg Soni , SNA Kailash Chandra Dad, SNA Krishana Chandra Swarnkar, were very much competent and were equipped with full technical knowledge which helped each one of them to tackle every situation efficiently to make the event a grand success.

The prize distribution ceremony was organized in a grand manner. The prizes were distributed at the hands of Chief Guest Sekhar Chandra Sahu  (International master, Orissa) , Guest Of honour Mr.Sanjeev Bhardwaj, (Organizing Chariman), Mr Nandkumar Chandel , Mr. Rajendra Teli (Vice President RCA ,International Arbiter & Fide Instructor), Mr. Tushar Mehta (Chief Patron, Chess in Lakecity) , IA Vikas Sahu (Organizing Secretary) & IA Neelesh kumawat (Chief Arbiter).

Bagamasbad Clinches Title in Asian Seniors 65+, Chito Garma Leads 50+ Group

Bagamasbad, a veteran in world chess the past 40 years, solidified his pawn structure and made a surprise move Bd7 with black in the opening allowing a 21-move draw in the French Defense, Tarrasch variation.

The draw enabled Bagamasbad to hike his output to seven points on account of six wins and two draws in eight rounds.
That gave him a 1.5-points advantage over his closest pursuers going into the final round of the 65-year-old and above category.
Bagamasbad, a habitue of Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) Chess Club in Monte De Piedad Street in Cubao, Quezon City, will go for a win in the ninth and final round on Saturday.

After the Tagaytay Asian Senior Chess Championship, the 67-years-old Bagamasbad is set to leave on Monday  for Terrasini, Italy for the 2023 World Seniors Chess championships from October 24 to November 6 and gunning for his third and final GM norms.

Bagamasbad is eyeing to set a Philippine record as the country’s oldest Grandmaster.

International Master Aitkazy Baimurzin of  Kazakhstan, FIDE Master Adrian Ros Pacis and National Master Mario Mangubat of the Philippines are tied for 2nd place with 5.5 points each after eight rounds.
Baimurzin nipped FIDE Master Antonio Molina, Pacis crushed Miles Patterson of Australia while Mangubat beat National Master Quirino Sagario.


Over in the 50-above category,  former Asian Seniors champion International Master Chito Garma (above right) defeated Candidate Master Helen Milligan of New Zealand to retain his top post after eight rounds.
The Tondo Manila resident Garma has a record of 7.0 points on six wins and two draws to move closer to the championship.
Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. drew with FIDE Master Carlos Edgardo Garma while FIDE Master Rudin Hamdani of Indonesia halved the point with International Master Barlo Nadera, both earning 6.0 points.


Nadera, on the other hand, notched 5.0 points for solo four spots.
The weeklong event is hosted by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, Cavite Vice Governor Athena Bryana Tolentino in close cooperation with the International Chess Federation, Asian Chess Federation and National Chess Federation of the Philippines chairman and president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr.
The total cash prize pool amounts to $3,000, with the champion receiving the largest portion, which is US$500.
The runner-up and third-place finisher will earn $400 and $300, respectively.
All top three finishers will also be awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Bagamasbad Nears Title in Asian Seniors 65+, Chito Garma Maintains 50+ Lead

TAGAYTAY CITY—IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad drew with compatriot FM Adrian Ros Pacis to retain his top post after seven rounds in the homestretch of the 12th Asian Seniors Chess Championship at the Knights Templar Hotel, Tagaytay City on October 19, 2023.

Seeing that the title is within his grasp, the 67-year-old Bagamasbad chose a quieter and Silent English Opening using the white pieces and veered away from the riskier e5 defense and successfully steered the game into a draw.
It kept Bagamasbad at the helm with 6.5 points, two points ahead of Pacis, National Master Mario Mangubat of the Philippines, IM Aitkazy Baimurzin of Kazakhstan and Randolph Schain of Cambodia who tote 4.5 points each.
Mangubat drew with Baimurzin while Schain subdued Pricha Srivatanakul of Thailand.
“Draw is okay. I don’t want to take a risk because not only focus on the title plus the 2nd of three GM norms,” said Bagamasbad, who is using the tournament as part of his preparations for the 2023 World Seniors Chess championships in Terrasini, Italy from October 24 to November 6.
It shall be recalled that Bagamasbad won the 11th edition of the Asian Seniors held in Auckland, New Zealand last year.
Thus, Bagamasbad earned an outright International Master title plus his first Grandmaster norms because of his efforts.
With two rounds to go, Bagamasbad needs only a draw in his penultimate round match against Schain on Friday to secure the crown plus his second Grandmaster norms.
Also making their presence felt on another big day for the Filipinos in the 65-year-old and above category were FIDE Master Antonio Molina and National Master Quirino Sagario.
Molina split the point with Kian Hwa Lim of Malaysia while Sagario outclassed Arena FIDE Master AFM Biket Zharokov.
Molina, Sagario and Miles Patterson of Australia were tied at 6th to 8th places with 4.0 points each.

Meanwhile, former Asian Seniors champion IM Chito Garma defeated IM Enrique Paciencia of Singapore to remain in sole possession of the top spot with 6.0 points, a half point ahead of his closest pursuers,  namely GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. and FM Rudin Hamdani of Indonesia who notched 5.5 points apiece in the Open 50-above category.

Antonio trounced FM Ahmad Ismail of Malaysia while Hamdani nipped Galymzhan Ibrayev of Kazakhstan.

Join Western Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championships 28 Nov-6 Dec. in Colombo, Sri Lanka

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE invites National Chess Federations affiliated to Asian Chess Federation to participate in the Western Asian Junior Chess Championships 2023 to be held from 28th November to 6th of December 2023 in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Entitled to participate are Chess players from Western Asian Chess Federations affiliated to the Asian Chess Federation, namely FIDE Zones 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.7 and 3. 8 The participant must not have reached his 20th birthday, before January 1st 2023.

The Gold medalist in Standard Chess event shall receive a Grandmaster (GM/WGM) norm. Equal first
(best 3 after tie break) shall receive the title of International Master (IM/WIM), with silver and bronze
medalists to receive FM/WFM title and IM/WIM norms in accordance with FIDE title regulations.
