Queens’ Chess Festival returns in July

The Queens’ Online Chess Festival, a series of continental women’s online blitz tournaments, is returning this summer. The third edition of the popular event, organized by the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess in cooperation with FIDE, will take place from July 02-16, 2023, on Tornelo online platform.

The festival welcomes all women chess players from around the world of all ages and all rating groups, including unrated chess enthusiasts. Participation is free of charge.

The festival gives everybody a chance to participate in two competitions:

Queens’ Women Open Tournament. Open to all female participants with FIDE ID, with continental qualifying events running from July 01-09 and Semi-Final and Final scheduled on July 15-16;

Unrated Princesses’ tournaments. For U16 (born on 1.1.2007 or later) female players with no FIDE rating. National rating is acceptable but will not influence the pairing of the event.

Like in the previous editions, a lot is at stake in the Queens’ Online Chess Festival 2023. The winners of the World Queens’ Open 2023 and Princess’ Tournament (both U9 and U16 ) will be invited to the 45th World Chess Olympiad 2024 in Budapest, Hungary. The ticket, full-board accommodation for 3 days and  invitations to the Opening Ceremony of the Chess Olympiad 2024 for the winner and one accompanying person will be covered.

The official Award ceremony for the Queens’ Festival 2023 will take place during the Olympiad.

The qualification tournaments and semi-finals will be 7 or 9-round Swiss tournaments with 3+2 time control, depending on the number of participants, while the final will be a round-robin with 5+5 time control (7 rounds).

Unrated players U16 years old (born on 1.1.2007 or later) can play in both the Queens’ Women’s Open tournament and the Unrated Princesses’ tournament.

Pouria Darini, Mitra Asgharzadeh are Zone 3.1 Men’s and Women’s Zonal Champions

GM Pouria Darini and WFM Mitra Asgharzadeh won the Men’s and Women’s Zone 3.1 Zonal Championships, respectively, held 22-31 May 2023 in Tehran, Iran. The event was organized by the Chess Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran under the auspices of FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation. The event was supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.

Join 17th Asian Schools Chess Championships 2023 in Uzbekistan

The Uzbekistan Chess Federation, under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and the International Chess Federation (FIDE), has the honour to invite all Asian National Chess Federations to participate in the 17th Asian Schools Chess Championships to be organized from 13th (arrival) to 21st July (departure) 2023 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

South Asian Chess Council Championship for Men and Women in Nepal

The Nepal Chess Federation (NCF), under the auspices of the South Asian Chess Council (SACC), Asian Chess Federation (ACF), and International Chess Federation (FIDE), in cooperation with the National Sports Council (NSC), has the honor to invite all SACC member National Chess Federations (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan & Sri Lanka) affiliated to FIDE to participate in the SACC Chess Championship 2023 scheduled 13-19 June 2023 at the Himalaya Hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Asian Continental Chess Championship: Registration Closing Soon

The winners of the Championships qualify for the FIDE World Cup 2023 in Baku

The Asian Continental Chess Championships (the Open Championship and the Women’s Championship) will be held from June 3-12, 2023 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The prize fund for the event is $100,000. Most important, the four top finishers in the Open Championship and the top two in the Women’s Championship will qualify for the tournament that chess players of all countries dream of competing in, the FIDE World Cup. One of the most prestigious chess competitions will take place in Baku (Azerbaijan) from July 29 to August 26, 2023.

Registration for the Continental Championship is open until May 25. In order to register please fill out the entry form.

Who can take part in the Asian Continental Championships?
The Open Championship and the Women’s Championship are open to one official player from all federations-members of the Asian Chess Federation. Additional players are allowed if they have a rating of 2300 or higher for the Open Championship and 2000 or higher for the Women’s Championship, based on the FIDE Rating List as of May 1, 2023. Exceptions to the minimum rating level may be made by the Continental President at the request of the national federations. Meals and accommodation for official participants are paid for by the organizers, meals and accommodation for additional players are covered for by the participants or their sponsors.Chess players from 20 countries, including Kazakhstan, China, India, Iran, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore, have confirmed their participation in the event.

Among them are winners of national and international tournaments, world chess stars and famous grandmasters such as Sethuraman Panayappan and Vijay Pranav from India, Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Shamsiddin Vokhidov from Uzbekistan, Xu Jun from China, Murtas Kazhgaleyev from Kazakhstan and many others.

The list of WGM participating includes Pallathur Venkatachalam Nandhidhaa (India), Batkhuyag Munguntuul (Mongolia), Irine Kharisma Sukandar (Indonesia) and others.

Tournament rules:

The competitions, 9-round Swiss tournaments will be held in accordance with the International Chess Federation’s (FIDE) Rules.

Attending the opening and closing ceremonies is mandatory.

According to the Regulations, the Blitz Chess Championship will take place on June 3, with the opening ceremony of the Asian Continental Championships scheduled for June 4. The final ninth round, the award ceremony and the closing ceremony will take place on June 11.

Ding Liren, Magnus Carlsen, Viswanathan Anand and Hou Yifan join Global Chess League

The inaugural edition of Tech Mahindra Global Chess League will make history, featuring numerous chess icons that include a total of thirteen players who have been World Champions in different categories from 14 different countries.

India/US/UK – 23rd May, 2023: Global Chess League (GCL), a joint venture between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, today announced the complete list of players for the upcoming inaugural edition. The first season of the Global Chess League will be held at the Dubai Chess & Culture Club from June 21st – July 2nd, 2023, in association with the Dubai Sports Council. It will feature reigning World Chess Champion Ding Liren, world’s top ranked chess player and five-time World Champion Magnus Carlsen, five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand, and four-time Women’s World champion Hou Yifan, among others

Genghis Imperial Wins 3rd Pangasinan Invitational Chess Cup

Genghis Imperial pocketed the top honors in the 3rd edition of Pangasinan Invitational Chess Cup (2200 FIDE rapid rating limit) held at the SM Dagupan City on Sunday, May 21, 2023. The Pureza, Sta. Mesa, Manila native Imperial collected 6.5 points in seven outings to take home the P10,000 top purse.
Imperial, one of the top players of Manila Indios Bravos, scored victories over Romy Cendana of Dagupan in the first round, Peter Mc Gerald Penullar of Urdaneta in the second round, Fidel Labuanan of Binalonan in the third round, Stephen Manzanero of Caloocan in the fourth round, Candidate Master Romy Fagon of Urdaneta in the fifth round and Fide Master Robert Suelo Jr. of Quezon City in the sixth and penultimate round.
He split the points with Joel Obogne of Manila in the seventh and final round.

Reddy Ceralde Balarbar, legal counsel of Hermano Chess Club and the president of the San Fabian Chess Club.

Christian Mendoza Wins GMG Youth Chess Challenge

Christian Mendoza, who hails from Antipolo City, emerged champion in the recently-concluded GMG Youth Chess Challenge Rapid Chess Tournament (15 years old and below) at the Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell Business Center in Mandaluyong City, Philipppines on Saturday, May 20, 2023. Mendoza finished with 6.5 points in the 7-round Swiss System format competition to pocket the champion’s prize of P 5,000 plus medal.
“I knew that this was a tough tournament with all the players. I just tried to play my best and now I am really happy,” said Mendoza.
The 15 years old Mendoza, a Grade 10 student of Antipolo National Highschool, bested Jian Carlo Rivera of Rodriguez, Rizal, National Master Al-Basher “Basty” Buto of Cainta, Rizal, Allan Gabriel Hilario of Manila, Jeanne Marie Arcinue of Legaspi, Albay and National Master Oshrie James Reyes of Santa Rita, Pampanga who settled for second to sixth placers, respectively, who all finished with 6.0 points apiece.
Top seed Fide Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Dasmariñas , Cavite, seventh, led other 5.5 pointers Arena International Master Gabriel Ryan Paradero of Pasig City via superior tiebreaks.
The third seed Mendoza posted sixth straight wins against  Xian Aiken Cuartero (Round 1), Delia Marie Penaverde (Round 2), Lira M. Placer (Round 3), Jude Angelo Dableo (Round 4), Allan Gabriel Hilario (Round 5) and Woman National Master Jersey Marticio (Round 6). He split the points with National Master Oshrie James Reyes in the seventh and final round.
Backed up by Thailand based coach National Master Gerald Ferriol, GMG Youth Chess Challenge Rapid Chess Tournament (15 years old and below) was organized by Bayanihan Chess Club and was sanctioned by National Chess Federation of the Philippines in close cooperation, rated by the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in close cooperation with Balinas Family, Ms. China Aurelio and Ms. Mimi Casas of Open Kitchen and Mr. Richard Poblete-Ramos of Eurobake Restaurant – Bakeshop and supervised by the Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation.
The event aims to develop good thinkers through the understanding of chess strategies and tactics, improving the logical abilities and rational thinking and reasoning of the participants, and instilling a sense of self-confidence, self-worth and camaraderie.
