GM Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son of Vietnam and Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra of Indonesia won the gold medal in the Men’s and Women’s Championship in Standard Chess, respectively, in the Southeast Asian Games held 10-15 May 2022 in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam. Truong Son beat FM Lye Lik Zang of Malaysia to finish alone with 7 points in the 9-round Swiss. IM Ervan Mohamad of Indonesia settled for a draw with GM Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam to win the silver medal with 6.5 points, in a tie with IM Tin Jingyao of Singapore who won the Bronze medal.

In the women’s division, WIM Citra Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia of Indonesia beat erstwhile solo leader WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Vietnam to force a 5-way tie for the lead.

WIM Sharmin Sultana Shirin Wins Begum Laila Alam 12th FIDE Rating Women’s Chess Tournament-2022

WIM Sharmin Sultana Shirin of Bangladesh Ansar became champion and WFM Noshin Anjum became runner-up in the Begum Laila Alam 12th FIDE Rating Women’s Chess Tournament, under the financial patronage of veteran chess player Begum Laila Alam and organised by Bangladesh Chess Federation. WIM Sharmin Sultana Shirin and WFM Noshin Anjum both earned 5½ points each after 7th or last round games. In tie-breaking system WIM Shirin clinched the title and WFM Noshin (photo above) became runner-up.

WIM Rani Hamid of Bangladesh Ansar, photo above, became 3rd with 5½ points. Five players earned 5 points each. In tie-breaking system among them Nusrat Jahan Alo of Bangladesh Police became 4th, Wadifa Ahmed of Bangladesh Navy became 5th, WFM Zakia Sultana of Agrani Bank Daba Dal became 6th, Israt Jahan Alo of Bangladesh Police became 7th and Neelava Choudhury of Rupali Bank Krira Parisad. WFM Nazrana Khan Eva of Bangladesh Police became 9th  and Warsia Khusbu of Basir Memorial Chess Club became 10th with 4½ points each. Best Under-10 prize goes to Arisha Hossain Tuba with 4 points, Warsia Haider Sarah got best unrated prize with 4 points and Poly Khatun got over 10 to Under-14 prize with 3 points. 7th or last round games were held today (Wednesday).

Begum Laila Alam was present as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners. Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim, General Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation and President of World Chess Federation Zone-3.2, International Women’s Master Rani Hamid, Executive Members of Bangladesh Chess Federation International Organisers Mahmuda Hoque Chowdhury Moly, Wazir Alam and Waki Alam spoke on the occasion. A total of 48 players participated in the 7 round Swiss-League competition. The winners were awarded cash prizes of eighty thousand Taka, trophies, medals and certificates.

TDR Pieris Wins Sri Lanka Senior National Championship for 8th Time

Telge Dantha Ravindra Pieris won the Senior National Chess Championship 2022 – (Over 50 years) in better tie breaker after tying with Derrick Perera with 5 ½ points out of possible 7 games. TDR was unbeaten throughout being the Champion of all time winner after established. The event was not held in 2021 due to the Pandemic. TDR who won the Sri Lanka National Chess Championships four times in 1981, 1983, 1995 and 2005. He was one of the leading players in the country in his younger years. He beat Jagath Perera, AH Katugampola, Derrick Perera and Ajantha De Silva and drew with Ruwan Nandika, PK Chandrasiri and Sudharman Pitigala to win the Championship Trophy, the Gold Medal and the shared prize of Rupees 15,000/=.
Derrick beat Antony Samuel, PK Chandrasiri, Varuna Mahasinghe, Ruwan Nandika and Ajantha De Silva, drew with Joseph Jayasinghe and lost to the winner TDR to earn 5 ½ points and the Silver Medal with the shared cash prize of Rupees 15,000/=.
Piyal Chandrasiri (photo above), Sudharman Pitigala and Ajantha De Silva tied with 4 ½ points each and Chandrasiri managed to win the Bronze Medal with the Better tie Breaker. Chandrasiri beat Thilagharajah Rajasingam, Jagath Samarasuriya, Jagath Perera and Ruwan Nandika, drew with TDR Pieris and lost two games to Derrick Perera and Amara Katugampola to reach 4 ½ points.
NAG Abeywardena (photo above) won the Sri Lanka Senior National Chess championships 2022 – Over 65 category scoring 3 ½ points out of 7 games. Sudharman Pitigala who beat Jagath Samarasuriya, Jagath Perera, Joseph Jayasinghe, V Murali, drew with TDR Pieris in Last round and lost to Ruwan Nandika and Ajantha de Silva placed 4th while Ajantha de Silva placed 5th scoring four wins with V Murali, Joseph Jayasinghe, Sudarman Pitigala and Amara Katugampola, drew with NPP Sandanayake and lost two games to TDR Pieris and Derrick Perera.
The Senior National Chess Championship 2022, conducted by the Chess federation of Sri Lanka was held in last week at CFSL headquarters. Event was held according to the Swiss System in 9 rounds. A total of 18 players participated in the event which was the highest number after establishment of the event.

Indonesians Grab Solo Lead in Men’s and Women’s 31st SEA Games in Vietnam

The 31st Southeast Asian Games Opening Ceremony took place at 10am today in Ha Long Bay, Vietnam with a beautiful cultural and traditional Vietnamese dance and musical presentation. IM Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia (above right) beat Zonal co-champion IM Daniel Quizon of the Philippines to share the lead after the first round but Yeoh was held to a draw by IM tin Jingyao of Singapore in the 2nd round. Here are the results of the 1st and 2nd rounds in the men’s division:
