Uzbekistan Medalists to Compete in Asian Youth Chess Championship

Uzbekistan medalists will defend their crowns in the Asian Youth Chess Championship slated 12 to 22 December in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Uzbekistan children were the overall winners when the Asian Youth was held in 2017 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Since then the same youths won the Chess Olympiad last year in Chennai, India.

The 2023 event will be the strongest Asian Youth championships, with the new participation of Russian champions and a rising Mongolia.

144th Online FIDE Arbiters Seminar in English

The 144th Internet Based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar (Asian Chess Federation) was held from 28th to 30th October 2023. It was organized by the Asian Chess Federation, under the auspices of FIDE and supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.

The Lecturer was IA/IO Abundo, Casto (UAE).

The Language of the Seminar was English.

Seventeen (17) arbiters from ten (10) national federations (BRU, FIJ, IND, MGL, NZL, PAK, PHI, SGP, SRI, and THA) participated in the Seminar, and all of them participated in the examination test, held after the end of the lectures.

Mongolia Joining in Full Force in Asian Youth Chess Championship

Mongolian children are joining in full force to compete in the Asian Youth Chess Championship scheduled 12-22 December 2023 in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Leading the charge is 2021 World Amateur Champion Sodbilegt Naranbold (photo below). Mongolian youth chess players have distinguished themselves in world and continental chess championships.

Top Russian Children to see action in Asian Youth Chess Championship

Since the Chess Federation of Russia transferred last year from the European Chess Union to the Asian Chess Federation, Asian national chess federations have been anticipating participation of Russian players in Asian events.

The Chess Federation of Russia has registered players in all categories, boys and girls under-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18, of the Asian Youth Chess Championship slated 12-22 December 2023 in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Asians Shine in World Cadets Chess Championship in Egypt

The World Cadets Chess Championship 2023 was held in six categories (Open U-8, Girls U-8, Open U-10, Girls U-10, Open U12 and Girls U-12). The competition took place from October 16-26 in the International Youth and Sport City, Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

The event attracted 502 young players representing 66 national federations. It was a close affair in most sections, but two of them – U8 and U8 Girls – were dominated by Roman Shogdzhiev (FIDE) and Bodhana Sivanandan (ENG), winning all eleven games.

Xue Tianhao of China put in an excellent performance (10.5/11) in the U10 Girls tournament and clinched the title with a round to spare.

Devindya Gunawardhana (Sri Lanka) and Diana Preobrazhenskaya (FIDE) tied for first place in the U12 Girls section, with the former claiming gold as the winner of their direct encounter.

Philippines, Indonesia, Iran Top Medal Tally in Paragames Rapid Chess

The Philippines won three individual gold medals followed by India, Indonesia and Iran in the Asian Paragames Rapid Chess Competition ending 28th October 2023 in Hangzhou, China.

Fifteen countries participated, namely Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

Cavite Spartans Lead Professional Chess Association of the Philippines

The Cavite Spartans stretched its winning streak in the Northern Division of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines’s (PCAP) third conference online tournament dubbed as GM Wesley So Cup held at Chess.com Platform on Wednesday, October 25, 2023.

The Cavite Spartans are on a 2-game winning streak and are looking to make it four in a row vs the headstrong Mindoro Tamaraws and the nimble RCM Cebu Niños.

The Cavite Spartans first crushed the Mindoro Tamaraws, 16-5, then disposed of the RCM Cebu Niños , 13-8, to strengthen their hold of the top spot.

The entire team sans one player scored a full point in blitz (6-1) while wrapping up the match win in rapid (10-4) vs the Tamaraws.

Anatoly Pascua, IM Oleg Badmatsyrenov, Melizah Ruth Carreon, FM Carlos Edgardo Garma, Renie Malupa and Jayson Visca spearheaded Cavite with victories in blitz where they dominated Mindoro, 6-1.

AGM Nezil Merilles provided the full point for Mindoro after beating Antonio Almodal III.

Spartans showed strength in rapid as they walloped the Tamaraws,10-4 thanks to the heroic wins of Badmatsyrenov, FM Noel Dela Cruz, WIM Bernadette Galas, Amelito Reyes and Alexis Maribao.

For the 2nd match, the RCM Cebu Niños fought tooth and nail in rapid fashion (8-6 Spartans) but the 5-2 deficit in blitz proved insurmountable thus giving the Spartans a 13-8 win.

Badmatsyrenov, Pascua, Garma, Visca and Malupa won their respective matches in the blitz portion.

Dela Cruz, Badmatsyrenov and IM Barlo Nadera lifted Cavite into victories in the rapid play while Kevin Mirano and Maribao split the points.

The Cavite Spartans moved to 9-3 and a 2 game cushion vs the reeling Laguna PECA executives at 7-and the surging Manila Indios Bravos also at 7-5.

Pasig City King Pirates remain on top with a 12-0 slate followed by the San Juan Predators who hold a 10-2 win-loss record.

The Cavite Spartans will meet Negor Sagar Sports (Negros Oriental) and Davao Durianburg Stallions on October 28.

PCAP, the country’s first play-for-pay league, is headed by PCAP President Atty. Paul Elauria, chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua,  PCAP treasurer Atty. 1st Governor Henry S. Oaminal Chess Festival Slated 10-12 Nov 2023 in Philippines


The 1st Governor Henry S. Oaminal 7-in-1 Chess Festival reels off Nov. 10-12 at the Ozamis City Auditorium in Misamis Occidental with a total of ₱500,000 up for grabs in four categories. The who’s who in Philippine chess will see action, led by Grandmasters Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. and Darwin Laylo, International Masters Roderick Nava, Rolando Nolte, Ronald Bancod and Angelo Young.

The country’s top and aspiring players will take the center stage in the individual, team rapid and blitz tournaments.

The rapid tournament, which applies a 9-round Swiss system, also dangles a spot to the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) national championship for the winner, who will also bag P30,000 top prize.

Also expected to see action in the prestigious event are International Masters Joel Pimentel, Kim Steven Yap, Rico Mascarinas,  Richelieu Salcedo III and Fide Masters Nelson Villanueva, Alekhine Nouri, Ellan Asuela, Victor Lluch and Mario Mangubat and National Masters Joey Florendo, Levi Mercado, Cyril Ortega and Levi Martuna.

They will be joined by Lennon Hart Salgados, Johnnel Balquin and Jayson Salubre.

Meanwhile, World Chess Hall of Famer Asia’s First Grandmaster Eugene Torre will be featured in the first of the seven events in the three-day chess fest as he plays simultaneous exhibition matches with Antonio and other superstars on the opening day.

Aside from the simul, individual and team tournaments, age group, executive and armageddon round-robin events are also lined up for invited chess masters in the three-day tournament.

Indonesia, Philippines, Iran Top Asian Para Games Chess Competition

Indonesia won gold in the Men’s P1, B1 and women’s B3&B3 categories in the Asian Paragames standard chess competition. Philippines won gold in the Men’s B3&B3 and Women’s P1 categories while Iran won the gold medal in the women’s B1 category of the Asian Para Games chess competition 22-28 October 2022 in Hangzhou, China. The scores of the top two players of each federation is their team score but medals are awarded to three members of the team.
