139th Online FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar

The 139th Internet Based FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar (Asian Chess Federation) was held from 9th to 12th September 2023. It was organized by the Asian Chess Federation, under the auspices of FIDE and supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.

The Lecturer was IA/IO Abundo, Casto (UAE).

The Language of the Seminar was English.

Nineteen (19) arbiters from six (6) national federations (AUS, IND, MAS, SGP, SRI, and THA) participated in the Seminar, and all of them participated in the examination test, held after the end of the lectures.

Hangzhou Asian Games – Hong Kong Chess Team

This year’s Hangzhou Asian Games features intellectual sports, including Go, chess, Chinese chess, bridge and e-sports. Hong Kong is sending a total of 43 athletes to the “Three Chess and One Card” competition, and some members attended the joint pledge meeting on Sunday (10th September) to enhance public understanding of the various events.

In terms of chess, the Hong Kong team sent Lam King Wai, known as the “Hong Kong chess king” and Hong Kong’s first “World Amateur Chess Championship” champion, to bring players under the age of 20 to participate, including 11-year-old Li Yiheng, one of the youngest athletes in the Hong Kong delegation this year.

Lin Jingwei, who is 47 years old, said that he is like bringing a group of small girls, he believes that this year’s main purpose is to “pave the way” for the new generation, “They are beginning to have results in international competitions, but Asian players are the strongest in all continents in the world, and we try our best to “save capital” in the face of professional masters, and it is good to win half of them.” He believes that the new generation of players does not have much baggage and can focus more on chess, “good attitude, attack when attacking, will not be afraid of the opponent, but may have surprises.”

Viswanathan Anand Opens Tata Steel Asian Junior Open and Girls Chess Championship

Jamshedpur, September 7, 2023: Tata Steel Asian Junior Open and Girls Championship 2023 was declared open by former world champion Viswanathan Anand and Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President Corporate Services, Tata Steel today.

The matches of the coveted championship will take place between September 8 to 15 at JRD Tata Sports Complex. A total of 121 players from seven countries will participate, which includes 58 girls and 63 boys. The countries include Kazakhstan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Russia, Indonesia, Nepal and India. This vibrant international presence will add a layer of diversity and competitiveness to the championship.

The championship consists of two categories – the Asian Junior Open (Boys and Girls) and the Asian Girls Chess Championship. This dual structure ensures that players of all genders have an equal opportunity to shine. The Championship is divided into three categories : Standard, Rapid and Blitz. The championships are organized as a round robin or Swiss system tournament depending on the number of participants. The winners of the open and girls championships earn the right to participate in next year’s World Junior Chess Championship.

Lauding efforts of Tata Steel towards the development of Chess in India and abroad, Viswanathan Anand said, “Chess as a game is progressing in India and around the globe. From being amateurs at the world stage to scaling top spots in grand tournaments, we have come a long way. The bond with Tata Steel has been long and one to cherish. We have all come of age through Asian Junior Chess Championships and this will be yet another opportunity for the young minds to make bold moves in chess.”

A. Kumaresh of India (rated 1703) won the Asian Amateur Chess Championship under 2000 held 27th August 2023 to 4th September 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Asian Chess Federation General Secretary Hisham Al Taher (second from left) awards the champion’s trophy to Kumaresh.

German Santiago of the Philippines won the under-1700 category.

Rouda Essa, Alserkal of the United Arab Emirates won the women’s under-2000 while Gamage Desandhi Dhihansa of Sri Lanka won the women’s under-1700.

A total of 120 men and 42 women participated from 28 countries. The event was supported by the FIDE Planning and Development Commission.

FEU players shine in 16th Mid Valley City Malaysia Chess Challenge 2023

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Chess Team students proved their mettle over the weekend at the 16th Mid Valley City Malaysia Chess Challenge 2023 at the Cititel Midvalley, Midvalley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from August 28 to September 3. This 9 Round Swiss System FIDE rated tournament, organized by the Malaysian Chess Federation dubbed as Merdeka Chess Festival gathered 206 competing players from 12 countries namely Brunei Darussalam, China, England, Indonesia, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

FEU’s woodpushers swept the podium, bringing home the gold, silver, and bronze medals.

UAAP Season 85 MVP National Master (NM) Christian Marcelo Olaybal topped the tournament alone in first place. The pride of Binangonan, Rizal, defeated Al Mubarok Jalaludin and Simanjuntak Morado of Indonesia in the last two rounds to win the championship title with a solid 8 points out of 9.

Not to be outdone, National Master (NM) Franklin Loyd Andes from Bicol, Albay, clinched the second-place spot, having the highest tiebreak among 7.5 pointers.

The female chess contingent of FEU also made their presence felt in this male-dominated sport. Youngest among the Tamaraws’ delegates, the 15-year-old Woman National Master (WNM) Ruelle Canino of Cagayan De Oro, placed 3rd with another 7.5 performance in the overall standings, showcasing her remarkable chess acumen.

Woman National Master (WNM) Vic Glysen Derotas from Cebu City, and Lemmuel Jay Adena from Caloocan City also made their mark, securing the 8th and 10th positions, respectively, in the Challengers category.

Meanwhile, National Master (NM) Oscar Joseph Cantela of General Trias, Cavite took the gold medal in the Open 16-under in Rapid Age-Group Chess Championship last August 27, and silver medal on Board 1 in SMS Deen Merdeka Open Rapid Team Chess Championship last August 25-26.

FEU’s female reserve, Arleah Cassandra Sapuan of Valencia, Negros Oriental also toppled with gold medal for U-16 Girls Division in Merdeka Day Age-Group on August 31.

It is during this year’s Merdeka Chess Festival that FEU has sent the most number of delegates with a total of 16 players from High School Boys and Girls and College Men and Women.

One of the most remarkable aspects of FEU’s chess program is its commitment to nurturing young talents, fostering a lifelong love for the game and instilling values such as discipline, strategic thinking, and sportsmanship. Their success in Malaysia is not an isolated incident but the result of years of training, unwavering support, and a culture of excellence. FEU’s program is designed to inspire and develop the chess champions of the future.

This international campaign is made possible through the guidance of FEU head coach GM Jayson Gonzales. Tata Steel Asian Junior Open and Girls Chess Championship kicks off from September 7

Jamshedpur, September 1, 2023: Tata Steel Asian Junior Open and Girls Chess Championship 2023 will be organised between September 7 to 15 at JRD Tata Sports Complex. 

A Total of 123 chess players from about nine (9) countries including Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Russia, Indonesia and Nepal have confirmed their participation. This vibrant international presence will add a layer of diversity and competitiveness to the championship.

The event will be graced by the presence of Chess icon Viswanathan Anand as the Chief Guest for the Opening Ceremony scheduled on September 7.

The Championship would be a testament to Jamshedpur’s transformation into a renowned sporting hub, capable of hosting international events.

Recososa Wins Bonus Rapid Chess Tournament

MANILA—Ryan Recososa took the championship trophy of Kagawad Eden Josefina Bonus Rapid Chess Tournament last Sunday, August 27 at the Barangay Holy Spirit, Quezon City.
The 38 years old Recososa, who presently works as associates staff at the Real Estate Brokerage, completed the 6-round Swiss system tilt with the highest score of 5.5 points to grab the title.


Recososa received P4,000, while Reyes and Campos got P2,000 and P1,000 for winding up second and third, respectively.
Also with 5.0 points are fourth Rommel Lucion and fifth Aaron Domingo.
Adjudged category winners who got P500 each are Aldren Baliwang (top PWD), John Paul Mahawan (top junior), Arnel Mahawan (top kiddies), Jashua Patria (top student), Alfredo Chay (top seniors), Joshua Villa (top unrated), Jake Espinosa (top Barangay Holy Spirit) and Lenal Reyes (top Barangay Holy Spirit).


Earlier, Kagawad Eden Josefina Bonus and 7 years old and youngest participants Jamil Mahawan made the ceremonial moves kicking off the one-day tournament also graced by tournament director Ron Demain, Michael Mallari, Lowie Orguino and Gilarmi chess club president Victor Puato.

Steven Lanada Wins 1st Barangay Dela Paz Chess Tournament

Antipolo City, Philippines —Steven Lanada, a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education graduate student of Rizal Technological University swept his assignments and scored 7.0 points to rule the just concluded 1st Barangay Dela Paz chess tournament held at the Barangay Dela Paz covered court in Antipolo City on Sunday, August 20.

Rivera and Barangay council made the ceremonial moves, firing off the one-day event, which aims to promote chess at the grass roots level and to discover future chess talents.

The 26 years old Lanada opened his campaign with a win over Kristine Reigne Espiritu then followed it with victories over Race John Alceso, Jilliam Avwill Bucsit, Johnny Rey Cauli, William Bucsit, Leo Carlo Campomanes and Lovenson Navarro.

Lanada pocketed the P5,000 cash prize, certificate, chess set and an elegant trophy courtesy of Kap. Jeff Naval Fernan and Barangay Council and SK Chairperson Elyssa Mae “Sam” A. Rivera and SK Council.

“I knew that this was a tough tournament with all the players. I just tried to play my best and now I am really happy,” said Lanada, who help the RTU chess team into an over-all championship during the 2018 National Capital Region-State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (NCR-SCUAA) chess team tournament where he won the individual board 3 gold medal award.

Lanada who learned chess at the age of 11 from his uncle Roger Laneda is the 2011 Barangay Eusebio winner in Pasig City as well the 2015 Barangay Burgos champion in Rodriguez, Rizal.

Teo Pastorite Jr. and Enrique Encarnacion finished second and third placers after tallying 6.0 points apiece while Lovenson Navarro and Leo Carlo Campomanes wound up fourth and fifth placers with 5.5 points each.

Rounding up to the top 11 with 5.0 points each are sixth Rodrigo Ramirez, seventh Nino Jan Manloloyo, eight Ericson Valeria, ninth Reedemer Berzonan, tenth Kurt David Panelo and eleventh Adrianne Glenn Sedurifa.

China Wins FIDE World Youth U16 Olympiad in Eindhoven, Netherlands

China emerged victorious in the FIDE World Youth U16 Olympiad held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The team dominated the competition, securing an impressive 17 out of 18 match points. Turkey, the last year’s champions, finished second, while Greece claimed the bronze medal. Kazakhstan Teams 1 and 2 brought honors to Asia by finishing in the Top Ten.

A record-breaking total of 252 players from 63 teams representing 47 countries participated in the Youth Olympiad, organized to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Chess Federation.

The Chinese team ruled supreme in Eindhoven. Only Armenia managed to tie the match against the Chinese squad. Out of the 36 games played, China scored a total of 31 board points. Miaoyi Lu became the top scorer of the Chinese team, winning all her games on the fourth board.

She also impressed chess fans and experts with her aggressive playing style. Tong(Qd) Xiao (board 2) and Xiangrui Kong (3rd board) both netted 7.5 out of 9, while Haowen Xue, on the top board, scored 7 points.

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich visited the Youth Olympiad during the 6th and 7th rounds of the tournament. He extended his congratulations to the Royal Dutch Chess Federation on its 150th anniversary, commending it as a strong part of the chess community. The tournament was hosted by Eindhoven’s High Tech Campus. According to Dvorkovich, it is important to bring chess to the University campus and tech business. FIDE President expressed his hope that the participants made lasting friendships during the Youth Olympiad.

Bianca de Jong-Muhren, President of the Royal Dutch Chess Federation, expressed her happiness at the successful conclusion of the tournament. “As part of the 150th anniversary of the Dutch Chess Federation KNSB, our aim was to host a prominent international youth event in the Netherlands. We are delighted with our accomplishment and the hosting of the Youth Olympiad in our country. It is also important that every team comprises both male and female players, aligning with our commitment to promote youth chess for all.”
