9 Men, 2 Women Share Lead in Bangabandhu Asian Zone-3.2 Chess Championships

GM Enamul Hossain and FM Tahsin Tajwar Zia (above left) and GM Ziaur Rahman and IM Mohammad Fahad Rahman (above right) share the lead together with FM Liyanage Ranindu Dilshan of Sri Lanka (below), IM Mohammad Minhaz Uddin, FM Subrota Biswas, FM Mehdi Hasan Parag, FM Sheikh Nasir Ahmed . CM Manon Reja Neer and CM Md. Sharif Hossain earned 3½ points each and jointly in 2nd position.

Wesleyan University Philippines (WUP) Chess Knights Top PRISAA Region 3

The Wesleyan University – Philippines (WUP) Chess Knights emerged victorious by placing first in the team category for both Chess Men and Women in the recently concluded regional Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) held last May 2-6, 2023 in Columban College, Inc., Barretto Campus in Olongapo City.
The 1st and second runners-up for the team competitions are the Columban College and Guaga National Colleges (GNC) for both men and women, respectively.
The members of WUP Champion Team, coached by Dr. Gener Subia, are Era Bauto (CAS), King-Wilfred Silverio (COED), Joshua Navarro (CBA), Crisjohn Paolo Vilar (CECT) for men and Christine Mae Gamboa (CBA), Micah Serrano (CBA), Queen Juliet Besa(CONAMS), Sheena Princess Bon (CECT) for women. They will represent Region 3 in the National PRISAA on July 2023 in Zamboanga City together with selected strong players from Meycauayan College (Rhen Cristobal & Arvie Aguilar), Columban College (Camille Anne Pasiderio and Megan Lopez), Guaga National Colleges (Franchezka Paule) and from WUP high school (Frenz Jeremy Ramos).

Three Categories in Malaysian Chess Championship

Kuala Lumpur, 6 May 2023 – (by Ellie Emira) The Malaysian Chess Championship 2023 began on 3rd May and is currently going into round 6. The tournament is being held at Flemington Hotel, in Taiping, Perak. Visit chess-results.com for round by round pairings and standings.

The event is divided into 3 categories – the Open, the Women, and the Challenger Category. There are a total number of 152 players playing. Chief Arbiter FA Najib Wahab is running the show, assisted by Malaysia’s newly crowned and first female international arbiter, as Deputy Arbiter – IA Ellie Emira.

In the Open section, we see our 1st seeded FM Lim Zhuo Ren (who won the National Championship before) back in action! He is followed by FM Yeap Eng Chiam of Penang and CM Ang Ern Jie Anderson. Currently leading the field is Sivanesan, Subramanian with 4.5 / 5 points. In round 6, board 1 will be played by Nik Ahmad Farouqi vs Subramanian Sivanesan, whereas Zhuo Ren will be playing against Yeap Eng Chiam on board 2.

In the Women’s section, 1st seeded is 16-year-old WFM Chong Kai Ni Agnes who hails from Penang. After 5 rounds, Agnes is leading by half a point ahead of second runnning Aqilah Husna. Coming up after her in 3rd place would be Akma Quzaina. In round 6, Agnes will be facing Ainul Mardhiah.

The Challenger category has the highest number with 84 players. This category is for those below 1800 to play. Here, our Paralympian players have also participated to practice for the upcoming SEA Games in Cambodia. Among them includes Mohd Johar Johari – one of the more active Paralympians in the local chess circuits, Norhayati Sarnoh of Perak, being assisted by the OKU Johor President – Dr Nasrul. After 5 rounds of games, Tharvin Shiva Shanmugam is currently leading with 4.5 points.

Zone 3.3 Men’s and Women’s Zonal Championships Start in Jakarta

Jakarta, 5 May 2023 – The airport banner above greets arriving international passengers as the Zone 3.3 Men’s and Women’s Zonal Championship starts today in Jakarta, Indonesia with widespread publicity and biggest prize fund offered by organizing Indonesian Chess Federation. At stake are qualification slots for the World Cup and Women’s World Cup plus a total of US$15.000 in cash prizes with US$9,000 for the men’s and US$6,000 in the women’s.

Ten Grandmasters are competing in the Men’s field of 33 players from 9 countries. In the women’s 7 Woman Grandmasters are competing in a field of 22 players from six countries. Dubai becomes the host for the inaugural edition of Global Chess League

Gabrielle O. Nuqui Wins 2023 Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association

Gabrielle O. Nuqui won the Central Luzon Regional Athletic Association (CLRAA) Secondary Boys Chess Tournament held last April 24-28 at the Palayan City Kalayaan Hall in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija,Philippines.

The 15 years old Nuqui, a Grade 9 student of Mawaque High School in Mabalacat City, Pampanga collected 6.5 points on six wins and a draw in seven outings.

Nuqui scored victories over John Mark Tallod in the first round, Daniel Gil Eclevia in the second round,
Tiv Omangay in the third round, Paul Terence Tabago in the fourth round, 5 Austin Jay Tablan in the fifth round, and Ralph Christian Aquino in the sixth and penultimate round.

He split the points with Vince Duanne Pascual in the seventh and final round.

With the win, Nuqui, representing Region 3, will advance to the Palarong Pambansa National Finals to be held on July 29 to August 5 in Marikina City.

” I hope to do well in the Palarong Pambansa National Finals in Marikina City.” said Nuqui, one of the top players of Mabalacat City Gamemasters Chess Club, playing under the guidance of Mayor Cris Garbo, coach Allen Dino and Deped trainers.

Rilloroza, Ventayen Rule San Fabian Rapid Chess Tournament

Istraelito Rilloroza and Mark Noah Ventayen ruled the San Fabian Summer Chess League Rapid Tournament held last April 29, 2023 at Brgy. Sagud-Bahley in San Fabian, Pangasinan, Philippines.

Rilloroza topped the Open category while Ventayen captured the title in the 14 years old and below kiddies division.
Rilloroza , a varsity woodpusher of the Far Eastern University trained by GM Jayson Gonzales finished the Open Division with 6.5 points while Apollo Agapay and Emmanuel Lomibao trailed him at second and third place, respectively, with 6.0 points each.

Jabez Antonio Canilang was fourth with 5.5 points followed by Jonathan Bayron, Brylle Vinluan, Jhune Dultra, Edgar Tullao, Gerald Lalas, Sinoden Saripada, Jerome Junig and Elwood Lacap, who all finished with 5.0 points apiece.

Meanwhile, Ventayen ruled the seven-round Swiss system rapid competition with 6.5 points. Liuyen Wuo settled for second place with 6.0 points. Vince Mark Gabrillo rounded off the top five with 5.5 points followed by Cleiford Kortchnoi Molinyawe also with 5.5 and Kim Andrea Mamaril.

Rishi Cendana grabbed the sixth place with 5.0 points, the same output of George Wu Jr., John Crisjard Estabillo, Jewel Hannah Aquino, Rian Edora, Gian Miel Erfe Mandagan and Whisky Rosario.

Not only chess players from Pangasinan but also from Laguna, Bulacan, Tarlac, Pampanga, Zambales, Isabela, Baguio City, and La Union participated in the one-day rapid chess event. “San Fabian Chess Club (SFCC) means Searching For Chess Champions,” he added.

” My goal is for the Club to conduct rapid chess tournaments four (4) times a year,” said lawyer Balarbar.

San Fabian, Pangasinan produced chess athletes champions in the likes of 1991 Philippine Junior Champion Fide Master Arlan Cabe, National Masters Dennis Gutierrez and Gefer Imbuido and the late Solomon Bautista.

Bangabandhu Asian Zone 3.2 Chess Championships Start in Bangladesh

The inauguration ceremony of the Bangabandhu Asian Zone-3.2 Chess Championships, Open and Women’s Championships, sponsored by Shah Cement and organised by Bangladesh Chess Federation was held 2nd May at Dilkusha Hall of Hotel Purbani International, in Dhaka.

The event is the qualifying stage for FIDE World Cup Chess-2023 and FIDE Women’s World Cup Chess-2023. A total of 56 players in the Open section and 22 players in the women’s division are participating in the 9-round Swiss-League format of zonal chess. Three thousand six hundred and two thousand four hundred US dollars will be awarded to the open category and women’s category. The open and women’s second round matches will start tomorrow (Wednesday) from 3-00 PM at the same venue

Dr. Benazir Ahmed, BPM (Bar), President of South Asian Chess Council (SACC) & President of Bangladesh Chess Federation inaugurated the event as chief guest. Heroic Freedom Fighter Brigadier General Shahidullah Chowdhury, ndc (Retd), Executive Director of Abul Khair Group & Syed Shahab Uddin Shamim, President FIDE Zone-3.2 and General Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation were present as special guests. K M Shahidullah, Vice-President of Bangladesh Chess Federation presided over the ceremony. Dr. Shoeb Reaz Alam, Addition D.I.G of Bangladesh Police and Joint-Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation gave speech and Masudur Rahman Mallick, Joint-Secretary of Bangladesh Chess Federation was present on the stage. All games started immediately after the opening ceremony at the same venue.

International master of Bangladesh Mohammad Fahad Rahman won against Md. Masum Hossain in open category, candidate master Naim Haque Sheikh Rashedul Hasan and Shafiq Ahmed Dr. Ratan defeated Kumar Pal. Grand Master Ziaur Rahman is playing with Candidate Master Sohail Chowdhury, Grand Master Niaz Morshed is playing with Fide Master Muhammad Suawe of Maldives and Grand Master Enamul Hossain is playing with Rajeev Zoar Haque Pradhan. In the women’s category, WFM Noshin Anjum is playing with Omnia Binte Lubaba along with WIM Rani Hamid playing with Abeysinghe Janandani of Sri Lanka.

In women’s 1st round play, top seeded WFM Tanima Parveen lost to Sri Lankan WCM Sanudula Dahamdi, Wadifa Ahmed defeated Sri Lanka’s Wijesuriya and WCM Jannatul Ferdous defeated Fatiha Eyenoon Dia.

Indonesia, Turkmenistan, Philippines Top Asian Mixed Doubles U-18 Team Championship

The Indonesian duo of FM Aditya Bagus Arfan (left) and Laysa Latifah, top seeded tandem in the 21-country tournament, won the Asian Mixed Doubles Under-18 Chess Team Championship held over the weekend of 28-30 April 2023.

The Indonesian pair scored 16 match points, one match point ahead of runner-up Turkmenistan with 15 match points and third placer Philippines with 13 match points. Visit chess-results.com for round by round results.

In the individual competition, Christian Gian Karlo Arca won the gold medal among the boys followed by Hommadov Amanmuhamnmet of Turkmenistan for the silver.
