Harshavardhan of India and Sultanbek of Kazakhstan Win Western Asian Juniors and Girls Rapid Chess Championships 2023

IM GB Harshavardhan of India and WIM Zeinep Sultanbek of Kazakhstan won the Western Asia Juniors and Girls Chess Championships 29th November 2023 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Chess Federation is organizing, on behalf of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE, the Western Asian Juniors and Girls Standard, Rapid and Blitz championships from 28 November to 6 December 2023 in Colombo. Harshavardhan (above left) scored 5.5 points out of possible 7 games with a better tie break over three other players, namely Halynyazow, Nepali of Turkmenistan, LMST De Silva of Sri Lanka and Mazhkenov Alisher of Kazakhstan. Halynyazow became 2nd while Sri Lanka’s National Chess Champion LMST De Silva became 3rd.
WIM Sultanbek Zainep (above right) also tied with Sri Lanka’s young Oshini Gunawardena (in photo with girls champion) who recently became the World Cadet Champion in under 12 Girls with six points and won the Championship due to the better tie breaker. Oshini had to be satisfied with the 2nd place. WFM Lala Shohradova of Turkmenistan came third with 5.5 points.
The Western Asian Junior Chess Championships 2023 is organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE from 28th November to 6th December 2023 at the Auditorium of the Board of Investment, Sri Lanka which is at the famous World Trade Center in the heart of Colombo.
Seven countries are participating in the event, namely Bangladesh, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives and Turkmenistan with host Sri Lanka. A total of 80 players, 40 in Boys and 40 in Girls participated at the Rapid Chess Championships 2023.
