Arado, Cu register podium finish in Philippine Age Group Visayas leg

Arena Grandmaster Fletch Archer Arado (above left) of Zamboanga City and Ivan Travis Cu (above right) of San Juan City continue to reap honors as they finished first and second in the 2021 Congressman Greg Gasataya National Age Group Chess Championship – Visayas Leg for Under 16 Boys on online tournament Saturday, April 10, 2021 at tornelo.com.

The 13-year-old Arado, a grade seven pupil of Ateneo De Zamboanga University High School, playing under the guidance of Ateneo De Zamboanga Sports Head Prof. Rey Reyes,  Redkings Chess Manila Coach FIDE Master Nelson “Elo” Mariano III and Zamboanga Sultans team owner Canadian National Master Zulfikar Sali collected 6 points on five wins and two draws in seven outings to went home the title in this 10 minutes + 5 seconds increment rapid time control format.

On the other hand, the 12-year-old Cu, a grade six student of Xavier School tallied a similar 6 points on six wins and one loss. However, Arado took the crown via direct encounter (winner over the other) tie break.

In third place was Kelly Martin Balbaboco of Paranaque City who had 5.5 points.

“Thank you to the organizers and the sponsors and especially to all my coaches and a special thanks to all the people who never doubted my strength.” said Arado, who also won the 2019 Private Schools of Zamboanga City Athletic Association Selection Games and 4th placer in Grand Finals, NCFP Selection to the World Cadets Online Championship.

Arado’s victories came against Relghie Columna, Andrei Lory Salvador, Cedric Kahlel Abris,  Ivan Travis Cu and Jerome Pullos. He split the point with Oshrie Jhames Reyes in the second round and Juncin Estrella in the third round.

Cu’s victories were over Yash Ansell Cayabyab, Khent Darylle Delig, Ariel Santander, Cedric Kahlel Abris, Jerome Pullos and Christian Tolosa. He suffered his only loss to Arado in the sixth and penultimate round.

““I’m very happy to win again (Co-Champion Under 16), especially in a tough tournament like this.”  said Cu, Champion in the Under 12 Boys Division of the National Age Group South Luzon Leg and 2nd Place in the Under 14 Boys Division in the National Age Group North Luzon Leg.

In the distaff side, Jamelin Ruth Lim of Bacolod City lived up to her lofty billing after snaring the crown with a 6.5 markers.

The other top finishers were Kim Kenneth Santos (Under 20 Boys), Ruelle Canino (Under 20  Girls), Carl Daluz (Under 18 Boys), Christine Faith Tabungar (Under 18  Girls), Prince Rolljhon Baulita (Under 14 Boys), Aeiona Lou Tomas Mendoza (Under 14 Girls),  Yosef Immanuel Morada (Under 12 Boys), Jillianne Jumalon (Under 12 Girls), Ghierzen Lhou Sebastian (Under 10 Boys) and Stephanie Jabagat (Under 10 Girls).

Dahamdi, Easha, Desandhi and Oneli leads to Semi- Finals!

Both champions of group X and Y won quarter finals without getting tied. Sanudula Dahamdi of Musaeus College (above left) successfully won both games against Tenuli Dahamna Rathnayake(Ananda Balika Vidyalaya) of Quarter final 1 and made her step to Semi finals by being the only unbeaten player of the event.  Easha Pallie of Visakha Vidyalaya (above right) made her way to semifinals by scoring 1.5 out of 2 rounds with Oshini Gunawardana (Pushpadana High School) in Q/F 2. Being an Eight year old, Oshini’s achievement of stealing ½ a point from Esha is commendable.

Nemindi Linaya Ramanayake (Bandaranayake Central College, Veyangoda) and Desandhi Dhihansa Gamage of Sirimavo Bandaranayake Balika Vidyalaya (photo above) had a very tough battle among each other. They had draws in both classical games. Therefore, it led to two rapid games. Surprisingly, they had draws in both rapid games as well by making a remarkable battle. According to tie breaks, next is to play two blitz games. Battle became more competitive since their first blitz game ended up making a draw again. Desandhi made it to the semi finals by wining the 2nd blitz game after a hard fought game.

Tharuli Vihansa Ranganath School(Yoshida International) and Oneli Vithanawasam of Lyceum International School, Wattala (photo above) also had a competitive battle. Oneli won the first classical game while Tharuli made it equal by winning the second classical game. In two rapid games, Oneli was able to made it by winning the both games.

The prestigious 2nd SL Youth Girls Chess Grand Prix 2021 is scheduled from 2nd to 18th April 2021 with 18 leading Girls Under 14 Yrs Chess players. There were 2 Round Robin 9 rounds events played from 2nd to 10th April after dividing them to two groups of equal strength in Rating. The knocked out stage started with the Quarter finals today and will continue on 17th and 18th April with the Semi Finals and Finals.

 

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka is offering Rs. 55,000/= as the cash awards for the event. All games are live broadcasted and the link is given below. The CFSL is planning to arrange live streaming of the event in the Semi Finals and Finals.

 

The event is held according to the strict health guidelines provided by the Ministry of Health and The Medical Unit of Ministry of Sports. The following regulations should be adhered:

  1. A directory of participants is kept.
  2. Facilities for fever checking, Hand washing are available. Players should come wearing a Face masks
  3. Gloves and face shields are provided by CFSL and players should wear them all the time they stay in the venue.
  4. The social distancing should be adhered. Tables are arranged that way as 1 game per table.
  5. No spectators, parents are allowed in the venue. They can drop the players at the venue and may come back to collect after the game.
  6. Player gathering after the games is strictly prohibited.

The system is same as Quarter finals where two games will be played giving alternate colours. If equal, the 1st tie breaker is two Rapid Games with different colour. If still 1 point each two Blitz games giving alternate colours again. If still ties as 1-1 an Armageddon game giving 5 minutes to White and 4 Minutes to Black is played where white has to win. If it draws Black is considered as the winner.

GM Parham Magsoodloo Leads Iran OTB Tournament

Iran Chess Federation holds over-the-board tournament in the midst of the pandemic.

Players and Arbiters and staffs were required to have a negative PCR test and stay quarantined in the hotel next to the federation. Players are not allowed to leave the Hotel and players area and other people or spectators are not allowed to visit the tournament hall. The temperatures of players are checked before every round and the tournament hall is disinfected before the start of the games.

After 10 rounds GM Parham Maghsoodloo leads with 9 points out of 10 games. Visit chess-results.com for round by round standings and games.

The tournament which finishes on Tuesday is as qualification for Asian Chess Championship, 20-30 May, Zonal 1-9 June and World Cup in July.

 

 

IM Angelo Young wins Cabellon online chess tourney

Eight-time Illinois USA Champion (IM) International Master Angelo Abundo Young (in photo) flashed his old deadly form after winning the Gerardo Cabellon online chess tournament last Saturday, April 10, 2021 at lichess.org platform.

The 1982 Philippine Junior Champion and 1982 Asian Junior third placer Young, IM Supergelo 12 on Lichess, finished with 70 points in 26 games for a win rate of 81 percent and performance rating of 2573 to win the 1-day event which attracted 273 woodpushers worldwide.

The online tournament had time control of one minute with an increment of two seconds and players must win as many games in two hours of play, according to 1996 Philippine Junior Champion and Bayanihan Chess Club secretary-general FIDE Master Robert Suelo Jr.

“I’m very happy to win again, especially in a tough tournament like this.” said Young, who finished eighth overall in the +50 division of the 2019 World Seniors Chess Championships in Bucharest, Romania.

“I try to train hard and practice again for the coming over the board chess tournament,” added Young, who also won the gold on board one in the 1st Hampton Gardens Chess Team Tournament which was held in Pasig City three years ago.

Noel Jay Estacio, the pride of San Dionisio, Iloilo took the second spot with 59 points on 26 games and a win rate of 77 percent for a performance rating of 2539.

In third place was 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. who had 58 points on 30 games and a win rate of 67 percent for a performance rating of 2464.
Rounding up to the top 10 were Kevin Arquero (fourth, 57 points), Candidate Master Chester Neil Reyes (fifth, 50 points), Richard Natividad (sixth, 48 points), Bong Anas (seventh,48 points), National Master Gerry Cabellon (eight, 47 points),Bonn Rainauld Tibod (ninth, 48 points) and National Master Rommel Ganzon (tenth, 47 points)

Imperial beats Landicho in Chess for a Cause

Manila—Candidate Master Genghis Imperial (photo above) of Manila Indios Bravos beat Israel Landicho of Cavite Spartans in the race-to-12 Chess For A Cause, Friday, April 9, 2021 at the lichess.org platform.

The match lasted 6 and a half hours according to Bayanihan Chess Club secretary general FIDE Master Robert Suelo Jr. in this 1-day event, 5 minutes plus 2 seconds increment time control format coinciding with the celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan. The event was backed up by Zamboanga Sultans team owner Canadian National Master Zulfikar Sali, Dr. Joe Balinas, Engr. Antonio Balinas, Mr. Theo Panga , JC Marikina, Mr. Jimmy Reyes, Retired Capt. Jun Isaac, Mr. Kim Zafra, IM Rony Roca, Mam Elvira Roca and MCF woodpushers in coordination with Jolina Icao youtube channel.

Dahamdi and Esha win 2nd Sri Lanka Youth Girls (Under 14) Chess Grand Prix 2021

Sanudula Dahamdi (Musaeus College) was outstanding to win all her games and score full 9 points out of 9 games she played in the Group X Round Robin stage of the 2nd Sri Lanka Youth Girls Chess Grand Prix 2021 today. Esha Pallie (Visakha Vidyalaya) was also successful to win the Group Y with a score of 7 ½ points out of possible 9 Rounds.  Dahamdi beat Somarathne L H M G S, Ramanayake Nemindi Linaya and Sithumsa H G Sasmi in the 2nd session and became unbeaten throughout the event while being the champion one round before the final round. Being the leader of the 1st session in last weekend with full points Esha had a tough competition in last 3 rounds with a win against Piyumi Uthpala Amarathunga, a draw against Onwli Vithanawasam and a loss against Tenuli Dahamna Rathnayake to reach 7 ½ points.

Nemindi Linaya Ramanayake(bandaranayake of Central College, Veyangoda (photo above), Tharuli Vihansa Ranganath (Yoshida International School) and Oshini Devindya Gunawardhana(Pushpadana High School) scored 5.5, 5.0 and 5.0 respectively and managed to win 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places in the Group X respectively by selecting to the quarter finals.

Vithanawasam Oneli of Lyceum International, Wattala (photo above), Desandhi Dhihansa Gamage(Sirmavo Bandaranayake BV) and Tenuli Dhahamna Rathnayake (Gothami Balika Vidyalaya) showed their strength in Group Y winning 2nd, 3rd and 4th places scoring 7, 6 and 5.5 points respectively. Accordingly, Pallie Easha Mishela, Vithanawasam Oneli, Gamage Desandhi Dhihansa and Rathnayake Tenuli Dhahamna selected for the quarter finals.

 

The top 4 players in group X and Y will play a a knocked out rounds of Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Finals to end the event as FIDE World Cup format of 2 classical games, 2 Rapid games and 2  Blitz games with alternative colours and a sudden death format game to end if all earlier systems are equal.

Dr Muhammad Ayoub Wins 1st Balochistan Champion of Champions FIDE rated chess Championship 2021

The Balochistan Chess Association (BCA), fully committed to chess promotion, in close collaboration with the Chess Federation of Pakistan (CFP), under the umbrella of Asian Chess Federation, and support from Pakistan Sports Board, continued over-the-board chess tournaments and kept players’ motivation and morale high. BCA organized 16 top masters of the province championship From April 2-4, named “1st Balochistan Champion of Champions FIDE rated chess Championship 2021” in standard format with 30 minutes per side plus 30 seconds increment from move one. The tournament was 16 players single Round-Robin, where masters and top players from all over the province participated for 3 days from 2-4 April. The total prize fund of the event amounted to 300 USD.

Tournament inauguration was done by Director Pakistan Sports board Muhammad Imran, in the sports complex of PSB.

Honourable secretary sports, and youth affairs, Mr Imran Gichki distributed the prizes to position holders in the closing ceremony.

Dr Muhammad Ayoub seeding second in the round-robin starting rank, presented extraordinary performance, breaking all records with stunning 15 wins in 15 games, conceding his opponents not even a single draw. Special prizes were given to Dr Muhammad Ayoub by BCA and Secretary Sports and Quetta chess club president Zafar Ali khan. Ali Madad finished second, whereas  Musawir khan won bronze, after a fighting game against the new champion.

Hazrat Ali gained a FIDE rating in the tournament at age 75 years.

All the fighting games in the event were video recorded and will be published on BCA official youtube channel “Quetta chess academy” with commentary.

 

2021 National Youth & Schools Online Chess Championships

MANILA, Philippines – Arena International Master Alexandra Sydney Paez (in photo), siblings Jersey and Jeremy Marticio of Cabuyao City and Christian Peter Mallari Aristorenas of San Pablo City will be under the microscope when they play against fellow chessers in the 2021 National Youth & Schools Online Chess Championships. The Southern Luzon Leg for ages 17 years old and below (Boys & Girls) gets underway on April 7 and 8, 2021 at tornelo platform

“I hope to perform well in this event.” said Arena International Master Alexandra Sydney Paez, whose stint here is being supported by Cabuyao City Mayor Atty. Rommel Gecolea and City of Cabuyao Sports Director Mr. Jerome Lualhati.

Also set to fight for their place are Wayne Diaz Ruiz and Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Santa Rosa City, siblings Oshrie Jhames and Prince Jhamie Reyes of Santa Rita, Pampanga, Ivan Travis Cu of San Juan City, Jaymiel Piel of Ternate, Cavite and Al-Basher “Basty” Buto of Cainta, Rizal.

Bayanihan Chess Club Match Up Series Chess For a Cause

Israel Landicho (above left) of Cavite Spartans will face archrival Genghis Imperial (above right) of Manila Indios Bravos in a head-to-head duel in Lichess arena on Friday, April 9, 2021 coinciding with the celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan.

“It will be a very interesting match against Genghis Imperial,” said the Bacoor City, Cavite native Landicho, overall eighth place in the recent Luzon Leg of the Philippine Sports Commission-National Chess Federation of the Philippines selection tournament.

“I will do my very best,” said the Sta. Mesa, Manila resident Imperial.

Dandeniya wins CFSL Online Youth Under 10 Yrs Chess Championship 2021

DDLN Dandeniya (photo above) of Maliyadeva College scored a grand slam of 8 points out of 8 games at the CFSL Online Youth Under 10 Yrs Chess Championship today. Dandeniya who was sharing the lead with 4 points out of four with 7 more players yesterday performed excellently scoring 4 more points with Onel Wijesinghe, Sesandu Chandula, KG Wimalarathne and Chanthuli De Silva to get the total 8 points out of possible 8 games. He receives the Championship trophy and the Gold Medal.

KG Wimalarathne (photo above) of Kingswood College Kandy finished with 7 points out of 8 games to win the Silver Medal. Wimalarathne tied with two other players Sethum Samaraweera and Damsen Dayarathne but had the better tie breaker to reach the 2nd place. Sethum Dayarathne (photo below) of Richmond College got the Bronze medal after the tie breaker. Damsen Dayarathne had to satisfy with the 4th place.

The CFSL Online Youth Under 10 Yrs Chess Championship 2021 conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was held on 3rd and 4th of April 2021 at the Chess.com flatform. A total of 155 players from all over the country participated in the event which was conducted on Swiss System in 8 rounds with the time control of 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment per each move played. The Players born after 1st January 2011 were eligible to play in the event.

 

With the current COVID 19 Pandemic situation, the Chess Federation as all other Chess organizations have started online Chess with all precautions for cheating. All players participating were allowed to play with laptop/ Desktops only and they were compelled to be in a Zoom meeting throughout the games with shared screen/ Task Manager. The Chess arbiters were closely observing them through this zoom meeting throughout the game. All other checking measures for cheating was in action and the Chess Federation has declared 2 year ban from Chess if any player found guilty in cheating while playing.

 

The Chess Federation plans to organize the CFSL Youth Under 10, 10G, 12, 12G, 14, 14G, 16, 16G. 18 and 18 Girls Championships this year in order to field Players to represent Sri Lanka in all World/ Asian Youth Online Chess Championships 2021. The Under 10 Girls, 12, 12G, 14 and 14 Girls are already over.
