Workshop for Arbiters in Online Chess

The Arbiters Commission of Asian Chess Federation is going to organize a workshop for the Arbiters in online chess in Arabic language. It will be held 19:00 Dubai time (+4 GMT) on 19th June 2020.
The main lecturer is IA Mahdi Abdulrahim (chairman of ACF Arbiters Commission, Chairman of the FIDE Rules commission) and the assistant lecturer is IA Hassan Khaled (EGY) the FIDE Rules commission counsellor.

Zones Hold Qualifiers for Asian Juniors and Girls Online Chess Championships

Zonals started 27th May to select qualifiers to the Asian Juniors and Girls Online Chess Championships organized by the Asian Chess Federation and Chess.com.

The Finals, scheduled 3rd June for the Girls and 4th June for the Juniors, will be 9-round Swiss System tournaments.

Players were proctored in a Zoom room separately for girls and boys by Chief Arbiter Abdulrahim Mahdi and Technical Delegate Casto Abundo. Tournament Director Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh made pairings by Swiss Manager and input into Chess.com. Assisting the organization were: IA Haroon or Rashid of Bangladesh, KK Chan of Hong Kong, IA Patrick Lee and FA Felix Poloyapoy of Philippines, IA Irina Gevorgyan of Uzbekistan, FA Anuar Ismagambetov from Kazakhstan and IA Shaun Press of Papua New Guinea.

Asian Player Ties for First in 1st FIDE Online Cup for People with Disabilities

Philippine disabled player Sander Severino tied for first in the 1st FIDE Online Cup for People with Disabilities held May 21 at  playchess.com. This invitational five-round Swiss tournament brought together 38 participants representing 28 national federations playing not only for the title and glory but also for a €2,200 prize fund.

During a brief opening ceremony the participants were greeted by FIDE President Arkady Dvokovich: “On behalf of FIDE, I would like to welcome all the player of the first FIDE Online Cup for People with Disabilitie. I think it is a great effort by the organizing team and I hope that even in these difficult times, all the players, everyone who is online now can enjoy chess, show the best qualities and prepare for FIDE Olympiad, which will also have a competition for people with disabilities. Good luck everyone, stay safe and enjoy chess.”

Before the start of the event, two highest-rated players Marcin Tazbir (Poland) and Sander Severino (Philippines) were considered to be the main favorites. Eventually, they finished with 4.5 points each with the Polish player taking the title thanks to better tiebreaks, but their way to the very top was not a smooth sail, to say the least.

Sharp vs Wise Online Chess Match

Chess Power (New Zealand) shall hold the Sharp vs Wise Match for both juniors and adults to participate in. It is casual, fun and will give your coaches an insight into how we run online events. It is open to juniors rated over 1000 and adults. It is free. We currently have players from NZ, Australia and Fiji. And we are expecting German players in the next event.

Players play for teams for their country – if they are juniors they are in the Sharp team. If they are adults over 18, they play for the Wise team.

Coronavirus Outbreak: Viswanathan Anand among six Indians to compete in online chess exhibition to raise funds

Former world champion Viswanathan Anand and five other leading Indian players will compete in an online chess exhibition on 11 April to raise funds for country’s fight against COVID-19.

The Indians will take on players from across the world on the portal chess.com. Apart from Anand, India No 2 Vidit S Gujrathi, P Harikrishna, Baskaran Adhiban (all Grandmasters) and the country’s top two women players-Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika will compete on 20-board event.

The event will be streamed live on chess.com/tv, where all donations made will be sent to the PM-CARES Fund.

Anand, who is stuck in Germany owing to the travel restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, tweeted: “Please support the Indian Chess Community’s support towards Covid 19 relief.”

To participate in the event, players must have a Chess.com blitz or FIDE standard rating of under 2000 and will be required to make a donation during the registration process.

A guaranteed game against Anand requires a minimum donation of $150. However, a $25 registration fetches the chance to play any two of the six Indian stars (one of whom may be Anand).

Just five spots are left to play against Anand.

Besides, the three biggest donors will get to play against Anand on additional boards during the live stream on chess.com/tv.

“It is a privilege that we can play our sport from home and collect funds for a good cause,” Harika told PTI.

On his part, the Chennai-based Adhiban said, “I am excited about the event. I am happy to support a good cause.

First Kazakhstan Online Tournament Uide Bol Cup 2020 to Start on April 11

The first Kazakhstan national online blitz tournament Uide Bol (translated as Stay Home) Cup 2020 organized by Kazakhstan Chess Federation (KCF) in partnership with Kcell mobile telecom will start on April 11, 2020, on chess.com website. The registration started yesterday on the official website and will be open until April 10, 2020. Only citizens and residents of Kazakhstan are eligible to take part in the event. The participants shall not exceed a thousand people, will have a chance to play over virtual boards for the total prize fund of 2 million KZT (about USD 4,500). There will be separate prizes for women, seniors, juniors and children.

“The overwhelming majority of the population of Kazakhstan is now under quarantine conditions caused by the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. This tournament provides an excellent opportunity for its participants to have fun and even earn money with their chess skills. We hope that the KCF initiative supported by the Ministry of Culture and Sport of Kazakhstan, Qazaq Cybersport Federation, and Kcell JSC will bring together a record number of participants. Key Decisions Approved at the 90th FIDE Congress and Extraordinary General Assembly

The Asian Chess Federation recently hosted the 90th FIDE Congress and Extraordinary General Assembly in Abu-Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The congress and extraordinary general assembly took place between February 26 – 29 at Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi 5*Hotel.

On February 27, witnessed FIDE Commission meetings (Constitutional, Ethics, Planning and Development and Verification); and Seminar on Chess Federation Management for Development Levels 3-5, facilitated by FIDE Planning and Development Commission.

February 28, the FIDE Extraordinary General Assembly as well as Zonal and/or Continental Meetings. On February 29, the FIDE Executive Board.

The congress and extraordinary general assembly was attended by 250 guests from over 150 nations including all national chess federation presidents, IOC officials and key stakeholders within the global sports business fraternity.

The EB was called to vote and the results of the voting were the following: 2 votes for Italy and 30 for Russia, 7 abstentions. Therefore, these Championships were awarded to Russia.

EB/22 Two bids were received for the World Cadet & Youth Rapid and Blitz Championships U-8, U-10, U-12 2021, respectively from Georgia and Croatia. The EB was called to vote and the results of the voting were the following: for 15 Croatia and 24 for Georgia. Therefore, these Championships were awarded to Georgia.

EB/23 A bid from Mexico for the World Youth U-16 Chess Olympiad 2021 was received when the prescribed bidding period was already over. It was approved to extend the bidding period for two weeks so that the Mexican Chess Federation could properly submit its bid.

EB/24 The Fair Play Commission report was approved.

EB/25 The following fair play procedures were approved: anti-cheating measures were proposed by the Fair Play Commission and FIDE is ready to support (by providing equipment and a commission of experts) the federations which intend to introduce such measures during the next most important tournaments.

EB/26 The Global Strategy Commission report was approved.

EB/27 The Medical Commission report was approved.

EB/28 The Online Commission report was approved.

EB/29 The Planning and Development Commission report was approved.

EGA/05 The amendments to the Financial Regulations (abolition of fees for participation in seniors’ events and those for Level 5 development countries, excluding membership fees) were unanimously approved and will be effective already for the second half of 2019.

EGA/06 It was decided that the Council will prepare a final version of the Financial Regulations by the next General Assembly to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk (Russia) and start working on a new version of the FIDE Handbook.

EGA/07 The appointment of E&Y as the External Auditor for the annual audit of the FIDE accounts for 2019 was unanimously approved.

GM Barcenilla wins Online Philippine National Bullet Chess Championship

 

Reigning Philippine National Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr. won the online 1st Philippine National Bullet Chess Championship at chess.com Monday, March 23, 2020.

Barcenilla, a two-time Asian Junior champion, 1989 in India and 1990 in Dubai, and 1991 bronze medalist in the World Juniors championship in Romania, split the point with FM Sander Severino in the final round to clinch the title of the 18-round 200 player tournament. The tournament was sponsored by Deputy Speaker and Surigao del Sur rep. Prospero “Butch” Arreza Pichay Jr., who is also the chairman/president of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Barcenilla is based in Arizona, USA, Many other overseas Filipinos joined the 200 player event. Barcenilla, the pride of Barangay Malamig in Mandaluyong City, registered a total score of 15 points from 14 wins, 2 draws and 2 loses.

“It was a great feeling winning in this tough 200 player 18 round tournament,” said the Iloilo born Barcenilla, who also has roots from Cebu and Iligan City.

International Master Daniel Quizon came second with 14 points followed by third placer non-master Samson Chhiu Chhin Lim with 13.5 points and fourth placer 13-time Philippine Open champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. with 13 points, who also won the top Senior award.

“Congratulations to the winners of the 1st leg of our 1st Philippine National Bullet Chess Championship online! After 18 rounds of gruelling non-stop bullet chess action, our reigning National Champion in Standard Chess GM Rogelio Barcenilla proved to all that he is also very strong in this extremely fast format of chess. The best is also the fastest! Although already 47 years old, he outpaced the field and finished a full point ahead of the 2nd placer, 15-year old IM Daniel Quizon. Hurray for GM Banjokov! Walang kupas talaga ang ating Grandmaster from Cebu!” said tournament director Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe, the chess federation executive director.

“The lightning kid from Dasmariñas, IM Daniel Maravilla Quizon, also proved his strength in this format by placing solo 2nd in this very strong and start-studded field. Finally, the surprise solo third placer is Samson Chhiu Chhin Lim from UST. Although untitled, he defeated GM Barcenilla and IM Richeliu Salcedo in successive rounds to finish alone in third place!
