Pyramid team of Iran blanked Fekre Bartar  6 : 0 for a total of 14 match points and 39.5 game points. These enabled them to retain 1st place with a 1 ½ game point lead over Bangladesh Police.

SGChessHUb@JurongSpring of  Singapore defeated Pishgam Novin 4 : 0 to maintain third place but lost their chance to win the championships after trailing the leader by 5 1/5 game points

Bangladesh Police also blanked Fars Youth  6 : 0 to stay within striking distance of the championhip.

Pyramid of Iran, Bangladesh Police and Singapore Chess Hub in Tense Homestretch

Pyramid Chess Club of Iran, Bangladesh Police and Singapore Chess Hub at Jarong Spring remain tied at 12 match points each after the 7th round of the Asian Club Cup Hybrid Chess Championship on Tornelo. The first tie break will be game points. Pyramid beat RichessMasters of the Philippines to lead by 1.5 game points over second running Bangladesh Police while Singapore Chess Hub at Jurong Spring is within striking distance at 30 game points.

A sweep by Pyramid of Iran over the RiChessMasters of the Philippines was foiled by a draw by WIM Bernadette Galas and WFM Tannaz Azali. However their 5 ½ points enabled the Iranians to widen their tie break by 1.5 game points.

In spite of draws by their two grandmasters in boards 1 and 2, Bangladesh Police banked on their boards 3 to 6 players to defeat Super Knight CC of Sri Lanka 5 : 1 to remain in second place.

SGChessHub@JUrongSpring beat Fars Youth of Iran 4 ½ : 1 ½ to hold on to third place with 12 match points.

Fekre Bartar (IRI) scored 4 points against Lion City Chess Meetup (SGP) to climb to 5th place.

Pishgam Novin handed Borna Satzevar their 7th defeat  (6 : 0) to move up from 9th to 6th place.

Andishmandan Satzevar eked out a 3 ½ : 1 ½ win over Super Knight CC 2. Both teams now share 11th and 12th place with 5 match points each.

150 Para-chessers vying in Philippine Para Games

Over 150 para-athletes across the country will compete in the 2021 Philippine Sport Commission – Pilipinas Para Games (PPG) Online Chess Competition which starts on November 19. “We are launching this project in our effort to continue efforts to address our need for a truly comprehensive grassroots sports development program for our para-athletes, and continuously harness their full potential,” said PSC Oversight Commissioner for para-athletes Arnold Agustin.

Originally staged in three regional legs, the online chess competition will now be held in one nation-wide event, on six categories namely, Visually Impaired B1 Completely Blind Men, Visually Impaired B1 Completely Blind Women, Visually Impaired B2 Partially Blind Men, Visually Impaired B2 Partially Blind Women, and Physically Impaired Men and Physically Impaired Women.

The PPG is also held in partnership with the Philippine Paralympic Committee and the Integrated Philippine Association of Optometrists on the classification of registered para-athletes.

Competition starts on November 19 via Zoom, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will conclude on November 21. Winners will receive medals, certificates of excellence and cash incentives.

To prepare the national para coaches and technical officials for this competition, a Para-Chess Online Technical Workshop started November 7. Six of our chess legends in GM Eugene Torre, GM Thomas Luther, GM Jayson Gonzales, IA/IO Casto Abundo, and IA/NM James Infiesto served as resource speakers.

“In a pandemic, we are focusing on chess as it appears to be one of the best solutions for our para-athletes to get themselves going again in sports,” expressed Agustin.

Sri Lanka Inter University Online Chess Championships 2021

Moratuwa and Colombo win Inter University Online Chess Championships 2021

University of Moratuwa (photo above) scored full 12 points out of possible 12 points to win the Inaugural Inter University Online Men Chess Championship convincingly. University of Moratuwa beat Universities of (6 – 0), Wayamba University of SL (5 1/2 – 1/2), University of Peradeniya (4 – 2), University of Colombo (4 ½ – 1 ½), Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (3 ½ – 2 ½)  and Uva Wellassa University 6- 0 to achieve the title. Kaveen Ishara and Chathulanka Gamage scored full 6 points while HMAK Herath and Rahul Jeyanthan scored 5 ½ out of 6 for University of Moratuwa.

University of Colombo Women (photo above) also had a great event, scored 10 points out of 12 possible points

Though University of Ruhuna led the points table till the 4th round their loss against Sabaragamuwa University affected them in a bad way. University of Colombo Women beat University of Jaffna (6 -0),  Sabaragamuwa University (4-2), University of Moratuwa (4-2), University of Kelaniya (3 ½ – 2 ½ ) and University of Sri Jayawardenapura (4 ½ – 1 ½) and lost to University of Ruhuna (2 -4) to win the Championship on the better tie breaker. University of Ruhuna Girls Chess Team beat Uva Wellassa University (5 -1), University of Peradeniya (4-2), University of Colombo (4-2), Eastern University (4 – 2) and Rajarata University (5 – 1) and lost to Sabaragamuwa University in the penultimate round (1-5) which ruined their progressive attempt.

Unoversity of Peradeniya beat Eastern University (6-0), University of Jaffna (5-1), University of Kelaniya (5-1), University of Colombo (4 – 2) and University of Sri Jayawardenapura (4 -2) and lost to University of Moratuwa (4 -2) which turned their hope of the Championship.

University of Sri Jayawardenapura placed 3rd in the Men’s Championship while Sabaragamuwa University placed 3rd in the Women’s Championship.

Due to the pandemic situation, the Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association (SLUSA) was not able to organize any Sporting events for the University students. So, the SLUSA decided to hold the three possible events, Chess, Taekwondo and Karate. In the result of the decision, the University of Moratuwa organized the event on behalf of the Sri Lanka Universities Sports Association with the support of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (organizing committee below).

The Inter University Online Chess Championships 2021 for Girls and Boys was held at the Tornelo Platform according to the Swiss System in 6 rounds on 6th and 7th November 2021. The match points system is used. Event was held with the participation of 28 teams (Boys 14 and Girls 14) from 14 Universities namely, Universities of Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayawardenapura, Kelaniya, Moratuwa, Ruhuna, Jaffna, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, Rajarata, Wayamba, Vishual and Performing Arts, Uva Wellassa and one of the newest Universities Vavunia University was in action.

Pyramid of Iran rested their board 2 Grandmaster but still overwhelmed the all women team Pishgam Novin  6 : 0 to lead with one game point ahead of Bangladesh Police.

SGChessHub@JurongSpring defeated 5th round co-leader Super Knight CC. Playing without their top two boards they managed to eke out a 3 ½ : 2 ½ win for a share of 1st to 3rd place. Opposing teams are in one Zoom breakout room and can watch that each of their opponents comply with Fair Play regulations.

Bangladesh Police defeated Super Knight CC2 of Sri lanka 4 ½ : 1 ½ to attain 2nd place with only 1 game point separating them from the leader.

Fekre Bartar defeated  Bishan Chess Club, also of Iran, 5 games to 1, to tie for 5th to 9th place.

Fars Youth (IRI) beat Andishmandan Sabzevar (IRI)  4 ½ : 1 ½ to move up to 8th place.

Philippine team RiCHessMasters trounced Check.mate.club of Iran 6 : 0 to improve their ranking to 5th place.

Lion City Chess Meetup of Singapore dealt Borna Sabzevar its 6th loss for a total of 6 match points.

The battle for first place tightens as four teams share the lead with 8 match point apiece, namely, SCFhessHub of Singapore, Bangladesh Police, Pyramid of Iran and Super Knights of Sri Lanka.

GM Barcenilla, CM Bayangat star as Laguna routs Caloocan in PCAP

MANILA—Grandmaster Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla Jr. and Candidate Master Arjie Bayangat trounced their respective foes as the Laguna Heroes thrashed the Caloocan Loadmanna Knights, 15.5-5.5, in the third conference of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) held via Chess.com Platform on Saturday, November 6, 2021.

The Arizona, USA-based GM Barcenilla, a former two-time Asian Junior champion, whipped International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia after 43 moves of a King’s Indian defense on board two while Bayangat upset International Master Barlo Nadera after 75 moves of a Queen’s Pawn Opening on board five.

“CM Arjie Bayangat was a great revelation in tonight. Blanking IM Barlo Nadera both in blitz and rapid was a difficult task. I really appreciate the team for the determination to hurdle our match against tough Caloocan Team,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, president of the Philippine Executive Chess Association and one of the four co-team owners of the Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA.

Laguna’s strong start sparked by Barcenilla and Bayangat was a big boost as Michella Concio nipped Woman National Master Arvie Lozano after 55 moves of English Opening on board three and FIDE Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad dealt International Master Domingo Ramos after 45  moves of a French defense on board four for a 10-4 victory in the rapid section.

Laguna’s board one player Grandmaster John Paul Gomez and board seven bet Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo settled for draws with Caloocan’s International Master Paulo Bersamina and FIDE Master Nelson Villanueva, respectively.

Paul Sanchez provided the full point for Caloocan after beating Vince Angelo Medina after 71 moves of King’s Indian attack on board six.

The Heroes, who are backed by Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, KALARO and Rotary Club of Nuvali,  also prevailed convincingly over the Loadmanna Knights ,5.5-1.5, in the blitz portion.

Laguna also blasted Rizal Batch Towers, 14-7.

Up next for the Heroes who tote a 15-4 win-loss record in the Northern Division are the Olongapo Rainbow Team 7 and Pengcheng Chess Club (China) on Wednesday (November 10, 2021).

Pishgam Novin of Iran got it second win by beating Lion.City.Chess.meetup of Singapore by a score of 4 ½ – 1 ½.

Bishan Chess Club edged Andishmandan Sabzevar (both of Iran) to grab solo fifth place with 5 match points.

Philippine team RiChessMasters got its 2nd win by overwhelming Fars Youth by a score of 5 ½ – ½.

Check.mate.club (IRI) earned its first win (5 – 1) against winless Borna Sabzever (IRI).

Second seed Bangladesh Police, bannered by GM Enamul Hossain and GM Ziaur Rahman, likewise defeated Pishgam Novin of Iran with 4 wins and 2 draws for a 5 – 1 victory.

Fekre Bartar (IRI) won over Fars Youth, also of Iran 4 ½ – 1 ½.
