Eight Teams Qualify to Exciting Knockout Stage of Asian Online Nations Cup

 

The all-GM Iranian team leads 8 qualifying teams into the exciting knockout phase of the Asian Online Nations Cup Open Chess Team Championship. Iran, headed by GM Pouya Idani (in photo above), topped the 9-round Swiss system preliminaries with 15 match points despite losing to Mongolia 1.5-2.5 in Sunday’s last round.

Mongolia and the Philippines share second slot with 14 match points followed by Australia with 13 match points. The Philippines beat Kyrgyzstan 3:1 to eliminate them from the KO phase while Australia drew 2:2 with top seed India.

The Philippine team is composed of, below from left, GM Mark Paragua, GM Rogelio Barcenilla, IM Paulo Bersamina, GM John Paul Gomez and IM Haridas Pascua.

The Mongolian team is composed of FM Amartuvshin Ganzong, GM Bilguum Sumiya, GM Batchuluun Tsegmed, IM Gan-Erdene Sugar and IM Batsuren Dambausuren.

Completing the magic eight are Indonesia, India, Kazakhstan and Singapore with 12 match points each.

Philippines, India, Iran Lead Women’s Asian Online Nations Cup

The Philippine women’s team edged favoured Iran 2.5-1.5 to share 3-way lead with Iran and India after 6 rounds of the Asian Online Nations Cup Women’s Chess Team Championship in Chess.com. Visit chess-results.com for all round pairings, results, standings and to download pgn files.

The Filipina women, in photo from left, WGM Janelle May Frayna, WIM Jan Jodilyn Fronda, WFM Shania Mae Mendoza, WIM Bernadette Galas and WIM Kylen Joy Mordido, lead with 10 match points and 19.5 game points.

India has 10 match points and 18.5 game points while Iran has 10 match points and 17 game points. The Indian team is composed of, below from left, WGM R. Vaishali, IM Bhakti Kuklkarni, IM Padmini Rouit, WGM P.V. Nandhidhaa and WGM Mary Ann Gomes.

Winning for the Philippines were WGM Frayna over IM Sarasadat Khademalsharieh and Mordido over Motahare Asadi. Filipina Galas drew with Anousha Mahdian to seal the win. Mobina Alinasab countered for Iran by beating Fronda on board 2.

In Saturday’s round 4, the Philippines smashed Kyrgyzstan 3.5-0.5 and followed up in round 5 by blanking Lebanon 4:0.

India kept pace, crushing Myanmar 3.5-0.5 in round 4, then blanking Singapore 4:0 in round 5. In the crucial round 6, India beat erstwhile leader Indonesia 3:1 to grab a share of the lead.

Iran also scored 3.5-0.5 in round 4 against Kazakhstan, beat Indonesia 3:1 in round 5 but met its match against the Philippines in round 6.

The top eight in the 9-round Swiss qualify into the knockout Quarterfinals. The women’s tournament resumes 10am on Monday.

Iran Men Grab Solo Lead in Asian Online Nations Cup

The Iran men’s team beat the Philippines and Singapore, and drew with erstwhile co-leader Kazakhstan in Friday’s three rounds to grab solo lead with 11 match points after 6 rounds of the Asian Online Nations Cup Chess Team Championship on Friday in Chess.com.

Australia and Kazakhstan are in second slot with 10 match points each followed by India and Kyrgyzstan with 9 match points each. Tied with 8 match points each are Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippines, Japan, Nepal and Singapore. The top eight teams from the 9-round Swiss System preliminaries qualify into the knockout stage of Quarterfinal duels.

The all GM team of Iran edged the Philippines 2.5:1.5 in round 4 on victories by Parham Maghsoodloo over Mark Paragua and by Aryan Gholami over GM John Paul Gomez. IM Paulo Bersamina countered for the Philippines with a win over GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami while GM Rogelio Barcenilla held GM Amin Tabatabaei to a draw.

The Iranians followed up with a 2:2 draw against Kazakhstan in the 5th round. Tabatabaei beat FM Rustam Khusnutdinov to score for Iran but GM Anuar Ismagambetov countered for Kazakhstan by beating GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami. The other two games were drawn between Parham Maghsoodloo of Iran and Rinat Jumabaev of Kazakhstan on board 1 and between Aryan Gholami of Iran and IM Denis Makhnev on board 4.

In round 6, Iran crushed Singapore 3.5-0.5 on wins by Maghsoodloo, Tabatabei and Gholami. Li Yang Hsu saved Singapore from a shutout by holding GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami to a draw.

The Australian team of (in photo above, from left) GMs Anton Smirnov, Temur Kuybokarov, Max Illingworth and Moulthun Ly and IM James Morris came on strong in the 4th round, smashing Bangladesh 3.5-0.5. GM Ziaur Rahman saved Bangladesh from a shutout by holding GM Max Illingworth to a draw.

In round 5, Australia could only edge a tough Sri Lanka team 2.5-1.5 as L.M.S. De Silva beat IM James Morris on board 4.

Then in round 6, Australia showed that they are a team to contend with as they beat Philippines 3:1 on wins by Kuybokarov, Illingworth and Ly. GM Mark Paragua’s attacking style scored for the Philippines against GM Anton Smirnov. Replay the sacrificial attack here.

Kazakhstan faced strong opposition in the second day of hostilities. The Kazakhs edged Mongolia 2.5-1.5, then drew 2:2 with solo leader Iran and 2:2 with top seed India.

The Asian Online Nations Cup for Women resumes 10am Saturday (UAE time) 17 October as leaders face off with Indonesia vs. Vietnam and Iran vs. Kazakhstan.

The Asian Online Nations Cup Open resumes 10am Friday (UAE time) 16 October as leaders face off with Kazakhstan vs. Mongolia and Philippines vs. Iran.

The Philippine team (in photo, from left) of GM Mark Paragua, GM Rogelio Barcenilla, IM Paulo Bersamina and GM John Paul Gomez blanked Palestine in the first round, Syria in second and beat Thailand 3:1 in the third round to lead with 6 match points and 11 game points. Each team victory is 2 match points.

In the lead pack with 6 match points and 10.5 games points apiece are Mongolia and Kazakhstan followed by Iran with 10 game points.

Mongolia beat Myanmar3.5-0.5, blanked Nepal 4:0 and crushed Kyrzygstan 3:1. Kazakhstan won 3.5-0.5 against Brunei, Iraq and Singapore. Iran blanked UAE 4:0, beat Japan 3.5-0.5 and edged Australia 2.5-1.5.

Team Asia Wins Intercontinental Youth Online Chess Cup

The Asian Youth Team won the Intercontinental Youth Team Online Chess Cup organized by Global Chess Festival and European Chess Union with support of FIDE on 10th October 20 at Tornelo Online Playing server.

The event consisted of a double round robin team championship with participation of teams from four FIDE continents, namely Asia, Africa, America and Europe with 16 players in each team comprised of 2 girls and 2 boys from each age category of Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18.

Europe started as the rating favourites with average rating of 2106 while Asian team had a rating average of 1822. Asian Chess Federation Executive Director Casto Abundo said that the ACF selected former world champions or runners-up from six countries. Asian Chess Federation thanks the national chess federations of India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Sri Lanka for their support.

Asian Chess Federation appointed Deputy President Mr. Bharat Singh Chauhan and International Arbiter Gopakumar M S of India as team captains.

The Asian team had a dream start in the opening round by beating Africa 16 – 0 while Europe got the better of America 13 – 3. In a nail biting encounter in the second round, Asia outwitted Europe with the narrowest margin of 8.5 – 7.5, which changed the entire complexion of the tournament. In the other second round encounter, America defeated Africa 11.5 – 4.5. In the third round Asia beat America 14 – 2 and Europe blanked Africa 16 – 0.

In the fourth round, as expected Asia tamed Africa 15.5 – 0.5 while Europe beat America 15 – 1. It became certain that the fifth round encounter between Asia and Europe will decide the champion and the Asian youngsters rose to the occasion to force an 8 – 8 peace treaty. In the sixth and final round, Asia easily overcame Americas with the score line of 14 – 2.

The Asian team clinched the title with 11 match points (5 wins and 1 draw) while Europe finished as second with 9 match points. America finished third with 4 match points while Africa finished as fourth. Visit chess-results.com for individual and team results. Visit official web site.

Earlier before the start of the first round, the Opening ceremony took place online. Addressing the participants were, in photo below (clockwise from upper left), GM Judit Polgar, Chairperson of FIDE Planning and Development Commission Sonja Johnson, ECU Secretary General Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou and ECU Vice President Dana Reizniece-Ozola  who welcomed all the players and opened the event. The video message of GM Polgar was played to them during the opening ceremony.

The Asian team received the Gold Medal Certificate while all the participants will be given an opportunity to attend the Masterclass by GM Judit Polgar.

Sri Lanka Chess Teams to compete in the Online Asian Nations Cup 2020

The Sri Lanka (Men & Women) Chess Teams are ready to participate in the Asian Nation Cup Online Chess Championship 2020 to be held from 10th to 25th October 2020 at Chess.com online platform.  Since the physical Chess has not yet been possible due to the global pandemic situation of ‘COVID 19’, the Asian Chess Federation has turned to online Chess and the event became a reality for that reason.

Sri Lanka is fielding the strong Youth National Chess team this year under the captaincy of Minul Doluweera of Royal College with the Sri Lanka’s strongest, International Master elect Harshana Thilakarathne(Maliyadeva College), The New National Chess Champion Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage(Ananda College), The youngest LMST De Silva (Nalanda College) and Theekshan Denuwan (Ananda College). The recently concluded Sri Lanka National Chess Championship proved that Chess is for young players and the average age of the team is 17 years.

The Sri Lanka Women’s National Chess Team led by most experienced, Women International Master Sachini Ranasinghe will consist of the new National Women’s Chess Champion Nethmi Fernando (Girls High School, Kandy), Sandeepani Tharushi (Devi Balika Vidyalaya), Ashvini Pavalachandran (Wycherley International School) and THD Tharushi Niklesha (Visakha Vidyalaya)

Thirty eight Asian Countries have registered in the men’s Division while thirty Two Asian Countries are confirmed in Women’s event.
