2022 Asia-Oceania University Chess Championship

Following the successful 2021 edition, 2022 Asia-Oceania University Chess Championship will be staged from 17-26 December 2022 online on Tornelo platform, in cooperation with the Asian Chess Federation and National University Sports Federation of Iran (IUSF).

Jerish John Velarde wins Philippine Youth Under-17 Chess Championship

MANILA—National Master (NM) Jerish John Velarde of Imus City shone in the National Youth and Schools Chess Championships Under-17 Open Grand Finals held 21st September 2022 at the Dapitan City Cultural Complex in Zamboanga del Norte. Visit chess-results.com for round by round results.

NM Velarde, a Grade 10 student of St. Martha Montessori School in Imus City, playing under the guidance of Imus City Mayor Alex “AA” Advincula, Congressman AJ Advincula and CFMI – JJM Construction, finished the tournament with 5.0 points out of 7 rounds.

The 16-year-old NM Velarde pocketed the top purse of P5,000 plus trophy for his stellar performance in the tournament sponsored by Dapitan City Mayor Seth Frederick “Bullet” Jalosjos and organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines under  chairman/president Rep. Prospero “Butch” Arreza Pichay Jr.

During the tournament, NM Velarde defeated Franklin Loyd Andes in the first round, Lemmuel Jay Adena in the third round, Zeus Alexis Paglinawan in the fourth round, Janmyl Dilan Tisado in the sixth round and Robick Vohn K. Villa in the seventh and final round.

His setbacks came against Jeremiah Luis Cruz in the second round and Ritchie James Abeleda in the fifth round.

“I didn’t look to the title, just to play my best,” said NM Velarde, who grew up in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. “I knew that this was a tough tournament with all the players. I just tried to play my best and now I am really happy,” added NM Velarde whose next tournament is the upcoming 6th Eastern Asia (ASEAN) Youth Chess Championship to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from November 4 to 13, 2022.
NM Velarde was born in Imus City, Cavite. He now represents his hometown, Imus City, Cavite.

 

“Our hope in the NCFP is to produce future national team players and champions,” said national coach/ tournament director Grandmaster Jayson O. Gonzales, who is also the chief executive officer of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines,

It shall be recalled that Reyes also won the National Age Group Chess Championships Under-12 Grandfinals last July 24, 2022 at the Robinsons Place Malolos, Bulacan.

Reyes is setting his eyes for the coveted FIDE Master (FM) title when he competes in the 6th Eastern Asia (ASEAN) Youth Chess Championship to be held November 4 to 13, 2022 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Oshrie Jhames Reyes wins Philippine Youth Under-11 Open Grand Finals

MANILA—National Master (NM) Oshrie Jhames Reyes of Santa Rita, Pampanga pocketed the top honors in the National Youth and Schools Chess Championships Under-11 Open Grand Finals held 21st September 2022 at the Dapitan City Cultural Complex in Zamboanga del Norte. Visit chess-results.com.

The 11 years old Reyes, a Grade 6 pupil of Santa Rita College, Santa Rita, Pampanga under the guidance of sportsman/businessman Jake Carlos, School Principal Eugene Lansang and Class Adviser Marites Reyes collected 9.5 points in eleven outings.

Reyes scored victories over Ran Zeth Marco Magallanes in the first round, Christian Tolosa in the second round, Ronell Jose Co in the third round, Sebastian Marbas in the fourth round,  Nil Jeschel Nahbi Gamba in the fifth round, Jaden Cedric Abesamis in the seventh round, Jan Reo Serenuela in the eight round, Pat Ferdolf Macabulos in the ninth round and Jan Calvin Abesamis in the tenth round.

He split the point with Mar Aviel Carredo in the eleventh and final round. His setbacks were at the hands of Aaron Aton in the sixth round.

With his latest feat, Reyes pocketed the top prize of P5,000 plus trophy in this eight-day event sponsored by Dapitan City Mayor Seth Frederick “Bullet” Jalosjos. Chester Neil Reyes Wins Araneta City Open Rapid Chess Tournament

MANILA—Chester Neil Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal won the overall title in the Araneta City Open Rapid Chess Tournament held 18th September 2022 at the Activity Center of Ali Mall in Cubao, Quezon City.

The weekend event was organized by National Chess Federation of the Philippines Director Martin “Binky” Gaticales. Chess in shopping malls is popular in the Philippines. Mall management look for events to attract people and therefore offer facilities to tournament organizers. And the high visibility event helps popularize chess.

Reyes collected a perfect score of 7.0 points after beating Kevin Arquero of Pasay City in the seventh and final round.

FM Alekhine Nouri of City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan defeated NM Jasper Faeldonia of Manila to finish second with 6.0 points while Christian Arroyo of Cagayan de Oro City toppled FM Narquingden Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal to land third with similar 6.0 points.

Nouri, the Philippine official representative to the World Juniors Under-20 Chess Championships to be held on October 11-23 in Sardinia, Italy had to settle for the second place by virtue of tie-break scores.

Narciso Gumilar Jr. of San Juan City subdued FM Nelson “Elo” Mariano III of Bacoor City, Cavite to finish overall fourth with 5.5 points.

Arquero landed in fifth place with a superior quotient in the huge group of five pointers that includes Rommel Lucion, Phil Martin Casiguran (Best Kiddie Player), IM Richelieu Salcedo III, Sherwin Tiu, Joshua Michael Yongco, Faeldonia and Walt Allen Talan.

Casiguran won the Best Kiddie Player award while NM Romeo Alcodia won the Best Senior Player award.

India, Kazakhstan, Mongolia Lead Asian Gold Medal Haul in World Youth

Asians led the gold medal haul in the World Youth Chess Championships held 6-16 September 2022 in Mamaia, Romania. Ilamparthi A R of India won the Under-14 Open, Nurgaliyeva Zarina of Kazakhstan topped the Under-14 Girls, IM Pranav Anand of India won the Under-16 Open and WFM Munkhzul Davaakhuu of Mongolia triumphed in the Under-16 Girls. GM Joey Antonio Wins MRSM Tun Mustapha Rapid Chess Championship in Sabah, Malaysia

MANILA—Filipinos GM Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. of Quezon City and FM Nelson Villanueva of La Carlota City, Negros Occidental finished first and second, respectively, in the MRSM Tun Mustapha Rapid Chess Championship 2022 (Open) held last Sunday, 18th September 2022 at the MRSM Tun Mustapha Tawau in Sabah, Malaysia. Antonio defeated Singaporean IM Chan Peng Kong in the ninth and final round to finish with 7.5 points on six victories and three draws in the nine-round Swiss System event, the same output of Villanueva, who drew with Indonesian Kamalsyah Muhammad.

Antonio ranked first in the tournament clinched the title and the top purse of 3,500 RM (Malaysian ringgit) and trophy by virtue of higher tie break points while Villanueva pocketed the runner-up purse of 2,500 RM, trophy in the contest which lured 92 woodpushers from five countriees.

On his way to the title, GM Antonio beat Yaakub Nov Genevia Pslam of Malaysia in the first round, Ladimal of Malaysia in the second round, Ahmad Md Siraj Munir of Brunei in the third round and Wising Abdul Sahim Malaysia in the fourth round and FM Yee Soon Wei of Brunei in the fifth round.

He split the point with FM Villanueva in the sixth round, IM IM Andyka Pitra of Indonesia in the seventh round and Kamalsyah Muhammad of Indonesia in the eight round before beating IM Chan in the last round.

GM Antonio’s next tournament will be the Rapid Chess Championships hosted by Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Officer-In-Charge Director General Teroso “Theo” O. Panga in partnership with JC Premiere Marikina Business Center to be held on September 30 at the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Main Office Double Dragon Center, West Building, DD Meridian Park, Diosdado Macapagal Blvd, Pasay City.

 

Bayangat wins Philippine Executive Chess Association Tournament

MANILA—Arjie Bayangat of Santa Rosa City, Laguna again stamped his class in the 2022 National Executive Chess Championship National Capital Region-NCR Leg on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at Robinson Magnolia, Quezon City, Philippines. The 39-year-old Bayangat, one of the top players and assistant coach of PCAP’s Laguna Heroes, bagged the top spot in the FIDE rated rapid tournament, organized by Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA) headed by it’s president Dr. Fred Paez and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) led by it’s chairman/president Rep. Prospero “Butch” Arreza Pichay Jr.

Bayangat, who presently works as Business & Integration Arch Sr. Analyst  at the Accenture Inc ., completed the 6-round Swiss system tilt with the highest score/tie break of 5.0 points to grab the title.

FM Jose Efren Bagamasbad of Quezon City placed second with 5.0 points, followed by John Ernie Maraan of Iba, Zambales at third with 5.0 points.

Freddie Talaboc of Quezon City and Engr. Mark Oliver Ingcad of Carmona, Cavite tied for fourth and fifth with 4.5 points apiece.
Danilo Tiempo Jr. of Quezon City, lawyer Cliburn Anthony Orbe of Pagadian City, IT expert Joselito Cada of Lucban, Quezon and ship captain Doroteo Whigan Jr. of Tanauan City, Batangas rounded up the top nine with 4.0 points apiece.

Cada won the Top Senior award, Whigan took the Top Unrated award, Joselito Asi who works as Senior Education Program Specialist Bureau of Learning Resources at Department of Education Central Office pocketed the Top 1900 and below award while Joshua Juaneza grabbed the Top 1800 and below award.

Bayangat scored victories over Constantino Villanueva Jr. in the first round, Joselito Asi in the second round, Roberto Racasa in the fourth round, Orbe in the fifth round and Talaboc in the sixth round. His setbacks were at the hands of Bagamasbad in the third round.

 

186 Players from 21 Countries Will Compete in the Asian Amateur Championship in Muscat, Oman

186 players from 21 countries are participating in the Asian Amateur tournament scheduled 28 September to 6 October in Muscat, Oman organized by the Oman Chess Committee under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation. Participating are players from Bahrain, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Palestine, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, in addition to host Sultanate of Oman.

The first-ranked is Kyrgyzstan Asan Kushof, the Lebanese second-ranked is Mahmoud Maasrani and the third-ranked Pakistani, Suhail Junaid, will also participate in the women’s tournament, the first-ranked Emirati Rawda Al-Sarkal, as well as the Palestinian Iman Swan and Salma Al-Khelaifi from Qatar.

The tournament is technically supervised by the international organizer, IA/IO Mahdi Abdul Rahim, and the Arbiters committee is headed by Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, and a number of Omani internationals are participating in the jury, namely (Muslim Al-Wadahi, Khaled Al-Hadidi, Hamdan Al-Hinai and Ruqayyah Al-Balushi).

The organizing committee aims to enhance the Sultanate’s position as a primary destination for participating in international sporting events and to support and enable the people of the Sultanate to participate in such a sporting event, thus enhancing their confidence in themselves as players, athletes, referees and organizers at a global level.

The organization of the Asian Amateur Chess Championship is a distinctive addition to the achievements of the Omani Chess Committee, where millions around the world follow the activities of the tournament through television and press coverage, websites and specialized sports accounts in the continent of Asia, which enhances the Sultanate’s exceptional position in the game on the continent, and it is an opportunity to promote tourist attractions and the renaissance The construction achieved by the Sultanate during the prosperous reign of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq – may God protect him – and it sheds light on the processes of progress and prosperity in the path of renewed growth.

2023 Australian Open and Minor

The biennial Australian Open Championships is one of Australia’s premier chess events. In January 2023, this event will be run by the Chess Association of Western Australia, on behalf of the Australian Chess Federation.

The 2023 Australian Open will be a GM norm tournament, the first event in this category to be held on Australian shores since 2020. It will be an 11 round Swiss, open to all players regardless of rating.

The 2023 Australian Minor is another 11 round Swiss tournament, running parallel to the Australian Open. The Minor is restricted to players rated below 1500 FIDE (or 1600 ACF, for players without a FIDE rating).

The event will be hosted by the beautiful Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough. Players will be able to enjoy Scarborough’s perfect beach, art projects, outdoor heated swimming pool, children’s playgrounds, laid-back cafes, and a wide range of restaurants and vibrant bars along the beachside. There will also be some of the best chess that you will find anywhere. It has the makings of a memorable tournament.

For visiting players, there are plenty of accommodation options available within Scarborough and surrounding suburbs.
